The recruit Jakarta seems like a player that would be Wisc type player and burden us for 4 years. Hope signs with the Illini.

Yeah... It makes perfect sense. Guys want to play. Unless a player is an uber-fan of a particular school that also has interest in developing them, I don't think we will see many that accept a redshirt or a year where they don't anticipate seeing the floor much.
For high major teams with aspirations of hanging banners, you need depth to make it through a long season. If a guy isn't ready to help you now, you may plant the seed of a relationship hoping to have it bear fruit in a couple years when the player has some experience under his belt in a less competitive conference.

It makes a lot of sense for both sides for a "developmental player" to go where he can play now and jump up in competition when he is more ready to contribute.

What will be interesting to see is if any patterns in relationships between specific schools develop. Will head coaches funnel "developmental players" toward mid-majors with coaches they have a relationship with and share similar values/strategies?
I think we're a long way from settled on this.

I think an added factor here is that coaches are going to realize the rent a player method may not work so well. Incomplete results on this of course. KState did great with this. Others, not so well.

Is there anything behind Carter and Greg from the sleeper podcast saying that there is already toxic character issues with our new roster? They claim they have inside sources

Nothing that can't be worked out by season time...if there is anything....

I thought Indy thought this was a non commitable offer and was just for relationship building and this kid could never play in BT.
The kid looks pretty good to me.

I stand by my comments … I have now seen him live … Since apparently seeing him live vs taking HM coaches who get paid to evaluate word for it isn’t good enough …

If Brad takes him … He’s gonna redshirt the first year and then play a Lieb type of role … I’ve got no problem with the kid … He’s a good kid to have in the program but the Hawkins 2.0 comments people are making … I don’t see it … At all …

And neither do any other P5 coaches I talk to … Hence why we are the only P5 offer … 🤷🏻‍♂️

If he wasn’t an in state kid … Would he even have an offer ?

Nothing against the kid but if he is starting or playing significant minutes for us … We’ll be competing with Minnesota for bottom of the Big Ten …

Obviously they have some connections with the program through their Field of 68 associations but I believe they were saying all offseason that Coleman and TJS were going to be staying in the draft while the Loyalty insiders were confident they would return from the start.

Not saying what they were implying is not a possibility, maybe our insiders can chime in there, but I don't think they are as tied in as they make it seem. Plus they love to kick the beehive that is the Illini fanbase for attention.

He isn't being recruited to see significant minutes. What Brad is doing is he knows the COVID year guys are about to end. That means you have to have a handful of guys that can potentially be developed, like Lieb. That guy at the end of your bench who is there to play the game he loves for the home state. He isn't playing to make the league he is there to get a world-class education. He is the guy that takes up the 12th or 13th roster spot and will be with you for four or five years.

The other key is he is not a guy that is going to eat up your NIL money.

So if he turns into someone that can be relied on for a few minutes a game sometime down the road ... why not take him?

I think someone brought it up earlier, what's the smarter move for these kids like Jakstys in this day and age? Go to the biggest school that offers them and maybe sit on the end of the bench for 4 years with the least NIL on the teams? You have the chance of improving and become a rotational player for a big school, so there is opportunity to be better.

On the other hand, you could go to a mid-major, potentially get paid more, it's not like all mid-majors are flat broke, but more importantly get earlier opportunity to see the floor. Then of course we know if you play well at a mid-major, it's pretty easy to transfer up to a high major. And if that happens you will have many more suitors than you had coming out of high school.

There's always the educational component, not all kids are interested in getting every last penny. Maybe he comes from a wealthy family and education is far more of a draw than an extra $25k or so.

I think it's just a whole new world out there.

This video does a solid job of expanding on the conversation we are currently having. Henricksen agrees with Indy that Jakstys is likely a mid-major talent, but also agrees with ILFan and Bash that there's some logic in taking him in this current system. Also, man, I'd love it if, despite everything with Jeremy, we could lock up Jeremiah Fears. Huge talent.

Fwiw, there was another pod with maybe Bossi or another "expert" who somewhat contradicted this take, saying Jakstys was underrated.

I think the argument both Indy and Henricksen make that Jakstys doesn't have any other high-major offer is a compelling one. It does seem to typically be the case that once a kid gets one high-major offer, others come rolling in. That it hasn't happened here is interesting.

Well Giorgi Bezhanishvili had only 5 offers according to 247. Only other power 5 was the Gophers. BU saw something in him so if it us a commitable offer in BU, in I trust.

And then there's Lieb and Hamlin. Love Brad more than most on this board. I have no idea what the right call is with Jakstys. All I know is, for now, we seem to be higher than everyone else on him.
