The players that aren't "me guys" like Tyler. Tyler got into it with Tre because Tre wanted to be in ball screen actions shooting mid-range jumpers. Same goes when Rez and DGL didn't get the roles they wanted. Tyler is trying to win games.

I asked 2 different players about Tyler and they said he's well liked and helped lots of guys understand basketball at a deeper level this year, this rumor has to be put to rest.

Side note if his last name wasn't Underwood EVRYONE WOULD BE SALIVATING OVER THE FACT THAT OUR FIFTH AC, THAT WE PAY $120,000, has a top 20 offense. ONE HUNDRED FREAKING TWENTY K. It's insane to me the Tyler hate.

Side side note: We lose more games if we give those three players what they want. Point freaking blank. Stop the Tyler hate. Blame Tim for promising those guys roles they didn't get.

Rant over. Peace.
Thanks for the perspective. 🫡

This all seems plausible to me, though I still think he would catch at least some flak (albeit less) if he weren't the coach's son based on how wildly inconsistent the offense was this year combined with his relative inexperience.

Ultimately, the one thing that seems most clear from this whole situation is that there are a lot of egos clashing here (aren't there always?), and we seemingly haven't figured out how to manage that yet, leading to high turnover among players and coaches.

Appreciate your insights, but the blame ultimately lies with Brad. He is the person who gets the final say with roster construction and player roles. There are larger issues if promises are being made from lower-level staff (assistant coaches) to recruits that do not fit in with the general game strategy. Tim is gone now, so hopefully that is resolved. Sounds like we need to start recruiting players that are not "me guys". The problem is in the day and age of NIL, good luck consistently finding those players.
In that sense, maybe it's a good thing that TA left if he wasn't buying into Brad's vision. Obviously the timing and optics were terrible, and Brad's vision itself may or may not be perfect.

But if the assistant coaches aren't all playing from the same sheet of music, it's likely the players won't either.

Hamer and his defensive schemes can go though 🙂

And the leggings …

Can we at least get some inbound plays? I am looking for something that gives us a chance to score on a designed play with a different look/ Quick Hitter mindset!!

This almost makes it seem like you weren't paying a bit of attention to the games this past season.

Then Josh needs to make the extremely difficult decision to get Oats to Champaign and let Brad go. This won’t happen but it should.

Our offense was good but had an element of “fools gold”to it imo. Very all or nothing. We looked like national champ material when we dismantled Oregon and IU but looked like less than Tounrey caliber in NW USC and Nebraska games.

It’s unlikely to win 6 in a row in March building around such a 3 heavy offense. Unless u have multiple big time shooters. Which we did not.

Let’s not forget the eye for talent either … He’s found some diamonds in the rough and developed them …

Dent … Washington … Mashburn … House … Toppin …
North Carolina should have grabbed him. I think Pitino Jr. would kill it there. I am not sure why Carolina is sticking with Davis. Forget his average coaching chops, Davis should be getting better players.

Is it not at least a little surprising there’s been no public info on AC movement for us? I’d expect at minimum to hear about Kwa’s spot sooner rather than later.
Agree. At a minimum....a communication that Kwa has returned to his previous position as we search for an Assistant coach. Whom ever is/was the prime target isn't likely still coaching at this point.

Does it speak to the players commitment to defense that we haven’t heard Hamer complaints where evidence of success is much less?

all fair points, and helpful to know. But I'm still left feeling the same way I did at the time he was hired- When you hire your son-who at the time had basically no qualifications to be hired at Illinois-nepotism is going to bring undesired criticism to your program.

There will always be questions about Tyler because of perceived and real nepotism. 0 chance Tyler gets the assistant coach role he has with our team if he isn't Underwood's son. And that will ALWAYS remain a problem IMO. Are we really all that surprised he's getting hate?

I'll add this as well: The coaching business is an unbelievable grind in which people work insane amounts of hours, grind, do thankless jobs, etc.. before they ever get legit opportunities. To have a highly sought after assistant position at one of the top basketball schools in the country- with no resume and very little, if any grind put in-it's going to create some sour grapes.
What if I told you Tyler has been offered more than he makes here for both an NBA role and a college AC role in the past year and turned both down?

I'd like to know the reasoning. I know being close to home and family is nice, but it seems like the chance to go and learn from coaches other than his dad would be invaluable to his career growth.

I'm not. It's human nature. People tend to rally around their opinions because it's easier than being wrong. We are all guilty of it, at times. And I am sure the tendency is coloring my approach to this situation as well, because I pretty firmly believe that, results aside, Tyler was not qualified for that position when he was hired and the optics aren't good.

Based purely on results, I have a much bigger problem with Hamer, though. Tyler's offenses have been decent or better.
I 100% agree with you. I can actually be persuaded that Tyler was a decent hire just by on court results.

Now, if any of the practice or locker room issues are true, well, Brad put him, players and other staff in a real tough spot.

Hamer should be fired and was an atrocious hire.

Brad wasn't around much while Tyler was growing up since he was on the coaching grind. Think they both legitimately appreciate the ability to spend more time together and collaborate on the same thing. Some things aren't about basketball or career.

I mean they’re a little close. Dad hires son as assistant coach when another coach in same position probably wouldn’t have.

🤓
Under extremely different situations and actually got experience AWAY from his dad. The only part of their career paths that are the same is the GA part.

Kellen cut his teeth as an Assistant elsewhere.
