10 seconds for intent, 30 seconds to actually do it. Although if it's end of game the challenge has to be "immediate".

Right. "Intent" meaning standing at the top step or a step or 2 on the field. Not too difficult. And the immediate challenge at the end of game makes sense because obviously if you don't challenge, you lose. A manager should challenge in that scenario 10 times out of 10 on any potentially controversial play.

I'm wondering where Price was or what was he doing? I never saw any video of him. Wouldn't you think he would pop right out of the dugout and go straight to the umpires?

How is price not standing on the top step getting the ump's attention regardless of the situation? It's a game ending play, what does he have to lose? It doesn't matter if he saw it, if he could hear the phone, or if it's even an obvious correct call. He screwed the pooch on that. He should have been getting the umpire's attention the second Carpenter crossed home. Why weren't any of the players on the field saying anything? Why weren't the 10-20 guys watching from the top step of the dugout saying anything? That ball wasn't deep in the corner where no one could see it, it was 20-30 feet off the line. Plenty of blame to go around, IMO.

That being said, the point of the rule is to get the call right. I think there's going to have to be some kind of rule change on that for next year, although I do understand the reasoning for the current language in the rule. You've got the team celebrating, fireworks, and fans heading to the exits. You don't want to wait 30 seconds and then all of a sudden have to review.

In summary, dumb rule, but kind of a tricky situation. Bryan Price is dumb. If the cardinals take the 2nd wildcard by a game it will suck for SF.

Glad the Cards won, but the Red's mgr is right. Stupid rule.

Stupid rule, yes, but Price has to be at the top step or out of dugout before Carp touches home. He can't wait on the phone call if he can hear it or not in this situation.

Cardinals activated Holliday off the DL today. The team also announced they will not pick up his club option for 2017 valued at $17 million. There is a $1 million buyout as part of this.

Though he did pinch hit tonight and hit a HR. And that was his first pinch hit HR which kind of surprises me since you'd figure he would have done that at least once in his career before tonight.

I have mixed emotions about not picking up his option next year. Hes been a solid core guy for us over the years. However, when I think about Jason Heyward's comments last offseason, I always thought of Holliday about being the center of the aging core. He doesn't run as fast as he used to. I really like him being on the team but he just can't compete at a elite level anymore. He is still serviceable. I wish there was a way to keep him. But its a business. The next man up will step in, as they usually do. It would be nice if we actually signed a big name in the offseason.

Matt will be 37 next year and clearly past his prime. Been a solid player for the Cardinals for years and I hate to see him go, but it's probably for the best. Perhaps he can hook on to an AL team as a DH.

This. I think he'll probably play for a couple more years in the AL, I wish him the best.

Wouldn't be opposed to resigning him to a smaller contract to be a bat on the bench and get a start or 2 a week. He's a good guy to have around, and he genuinely loves it in stl, so it wouldn't really surprise me, he's just not worth 17M.

As for his at bat last night, as he walked to the plate I just had a feeling he was going to do something special, but admit that I lost all hope for that when the count ran 0-2. That was a special moment.

Looks like it doesn't matter how our game ends. Giants already lead 4-0. Tying run on third no outs and we didn't score. That was the end in my opinion.

Well...looking forward to the offseason. I don't expect anything major from Mo, and I don't think we need any huge signings. Some small changes, getting some injured guys back, and some younger guys growing up could get us right back to 100 wins IMO.

Garcia and Oh have club options. Holliday's, of course, was already declined. I'd imagine we let Garcia go unless we can keep him on the cheap.

Moss is the only free agent. I bet we let him go too, because he will probably demand more money after his good year.

We have already been linked with Lourdes Gurriel from Cuba. But his brother plays for the Astros so he might be tough to get.

We didn't spend much last off season after offering big contracts to Heyward and price. We still have most of that money, plus Holliday coming off the books. I wouldn't be surprised if MO is aggressive in either the free agent market, or a trade for a big name followed by a contract extension. If moss is gone we will need another outfielder, I don't think Pham is an every day player. Starting pitching is somewhere we could spend some money, but the emergence of reyes makes that less likely. Waino, cmart, reyes, Lynn, and Leake make the most sense. I think we have plenty of infielders too. Peralta, diaz, wong, carpenter, gyorko, and Adams. Could add an arm in the bullpen maybe if there's a big name available.

This could be one of the more interesting offseasons for the Cardinals in recent years.

Matheny of course will be back next year though I could see his seat starting to warm a bit if things don't go the way they should next season.

Agreed. If there is a guy Mo really likes, he will go after him. Problem is there aren't many big names this year, so I think the middle-tier free agents will be expensive. And Mo won't give a guy more money than he deserves just because he has some money to spend.

The biggest names this year are Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, and Aroldis Chapman. Jose and Edwin will likely stay in the AL and who knows where Chapman will end up, but he's definitely getting paid wherever he goes.

We'll see what happens with the outfield. Jon Jay, Peter Bourjos, and Colby Rasmus are all free agents FWIW.:D Jay actually had a good year, batting .291. If we can't get a good outfielder, I would kind of like to see Wong play LF and move Carpenter back to 2nd.

I expect Jose Martinez to offer a lot next year for the outfield. I was quite impressed with him.
