2016 St. Louis Cardinals

That was a moon shot, no doubt. The one Morales hit would still be going if it didn't run into something on the way up.

Mo/DeWitt tried to rebuild on the fly, counting on Wong/Adams/Grichuk/Piscotty to develop into legit big leaguers. They are 1 for 4.

That's just one problem. This infield is terrible defensively, and has no range to make it worse.
We are also the worst baserunning team I've seen in quite awhile. The bullpen is shaky. On and off, mostly off, offense, too many players swinging for the fences and piling up K's.

Too many problems to fix at the trade deadline.
Not to early to start on next year. A CF with years of control tops my list.

You are talking like the Cardinals are 15 games under 500. They are 3rd in the NL in runs scored per game. Look around the league, power and K's are the norm now. The bullpen is going through a rough patch but when it's right it's dominant.

By the trade deadline I think we'll only need to make small changes, if any at all.

Cards are still in the thick of the wild card race. Making the division race interesting looks like a tall order at this point but, stranger things have happened. Just feels like they are wasting opportunities. Starting pitching has been solid for awhile now but, you wouldn't know it from our recent record.

Game today in a rain delay. Even if they get this game in today (which looking at the radar it will be awhile before they do if at all), I'd be very surprised if they play the game tomorrow as the forecast tomorrow is worse. If either game gets postponed, earliest common off day both teams have is August 15th though I don't know how willing the Brewers would be willing to play then as they have a doubleheader the next day at Wrigley including a makeup game with a postponement from late April.

Great, Pirates are calling up another AAA pitcher for Thursdays game. Chalk up another W for the Pirates. They have to be laughing at the Cardinals now. By the end of the year, they'll be calling up guys from single A to face the Cardinals, and probably still winning. At least Thurdays guy is right handed. Might have a small chance. Need to win today to maintain 2nd place.

So that's how we get to these triple A guys - send our hitters down there to figure it out. Brilliant!

With all these injuries popping up I feel like this might be a year where things just don't come together. Not sure if we should buy or sell at the trade deadline. The Cubs recently play makes me think we should buy.

Didn't watch the Futures All Star game, but might have to catch a replay -

Alex Reyes, RHP, No. 1: Reyes started and tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out four. He made six pitches that reached at least 100 mph, including a 101-mph fastball that struck out Padres prospect Hunter Renfroe (No. 82 overall) to the end the first.

Fastball was very impressive, and he also mixed in a nice 12-6 curveball. Could be a nice weapon out of the pen in the second half. MLB Network went out before I could watch Carson Kelly but I saw he had a home run robbed.

Well, taking back 2nd plac makes me feel better going into the break. The cubs still have the largest lead of any division leader with 7ganes, but I think that's manageable. We just need to get our pen back to good form. The defense and starting pitching has gotten better over the last month. Our pen has gotten worse. If Mo can get us a few extra hands out there, I think we are buyers. We'll see how the market looks. It could get interesting.

Please forgive this Cubs fan for wandering into enemy territory, but I am curious about Reyes from a fantasy baseball perspective. Is he projected to make the leap to St. Louis this year? If so, what's his ETA and projected role?

Thanks in advance!

Reyes will most likely be a mid-August call up for the club and someone who they will plug into the bullpen. A lot of people speculate that he would make spot starts down the stretch but the front office has hinted otherwise, citing that he needs to be able to get thru more than 4-5 innings of work. Bc right now, he tries to strike everyone out and his pitch count suffers as a result. Out of 9 starts, he has only gotten into the 6th two times. Unless his minor league starts change in length, I wouldn't necessarily add him when he gets called up.

Right now and for the immediate future, he's a bullpen guy. His control is not that good (45 on the scale) as he tries to K everyone, as the poster said above.

Yeah if Reyes does come up it will be in the 'pen. Ideally I think the club would like to keep him in AAA to get more reps as a starter. That way he could compete for a starting spot in spring training. But there is no doubt he could help in the bullpen right now.

The Cardinal defense needs to continue to improve. Currently it is ranked 28th in MLB, better only than the Twins and Athletics. Base running has to get better as well: now 29th, only ahead of the Mariners.

Missing Oqendo big time.

Maybe we should get Scott Rolen as a running coach. He was always a smart/good base runner.

Well, Rosenthal does it again. Matheny should NEVER use him to try to protect a lead in late innings. Fortunately, Pham and Grichuk come through in the bottom of the 7th.

Rosenthal should NEVER have been put in that situation. Matheny still a bonehead, and poor defense cost us again too.
Poor defense
Poor pitching
Poor managing
Too much to overcome

Agreed. Matheny had the ENTIRE bullpen at his disposal, well rested after the All-Star break. And he picks Rosenthal in that situation? Unbelievable.

It's time to send Rosie down, and call up Reyes. Even though Reyes isn't ready, he's a better option than Rosie at this moment. Also, what the f has happened to Siegrist the last month?

Keep an eye on Harrison Bader for a call up or trade. He tore up AA, called up to AAA recently and is tearing the cover off the ball. He could either take Adams spot if traded, or he could be the big piece in getting a reliever.

Would really like to see Pham and Grichuk heat up to make that Adams trade a little easier to make.
