2017-18 Illini Golf

NW actually looks pretty good for the tiebreaker. I thought their horrible round yesterday would have buried them, but it was evenly horrible through their entire line up. They'll only take a +6 on it with a +1 from round 1. Same as our tiebreaker score through 2.

I'm less worried about the nine strokes they are back of 8th place and more worried about the number of teams they'll have to pass. Got some work to do.

Looks like NW may sneak in too. Good for them.

Florida now two strokes in back of us. I'm calling it a lock.

Agree with comment above. -6 on Monday and we're in the Finals. Would love to have Duke in round 1 as a #1 vs #8 match-up!

Would certainly rather play Duke than OSU on their home course. But. . . First things first

Illini live to play another day! They have their work cut out for the tomorrow, needing to make up 9 strokes to make match play.

Plus, the teams ahead of them are most of the best teams in the country, so I don't think you can count on many of them to fall apart.

They really haven't had a low round, yet. Tomorrow would be a great day to pull one out.

Mike Small does not sound happy about today's round:

"If we expect to play well tomorrow, and to move up the leaderboard, then we are going to have to play more fundamentally solid golf. There is no excuse or reason for the way that we played today. I felt like we were going to have a solid and strong Illini Golf performance, but it wasn't meant to be. We got off to a loose start, righted the ship during the middle holes, then finished in a very careless manner. The pressure seemed to get to us today, and that was surprising to me. Proper course management and a commitment to correct lines and targets are a must for this course, and we cannot continue to put the golf ball in poor positions to score from."

It will be interesting to see if the Illini play inspired golf or just go through the motions after Small's comment.

Good luck to the boys today. Going off in the first group at 11:30 and know they have to post a low score. Hopefully they can erase yesterday's outing and come out firing on all cylinders today.

Its going to be really tough to move into the top 8 today.
Not that I'm giving up on these guys, they have proved to be survivors.
However, the top 8 are at about +6 to +8 after 3 days, averaging +2 to +3 per day.
We need to make up about 10 strokes on one of those teams and also need to pass about 6-7 teams. So, we need to shoot near par while at least one of the top 8 falters. That's asking a lot.

So, here is me asking

I think his teams respond after he gets after them. I can't remember any specific instrances, maybe after a poor showing at a regional a few years back. Or maybe a comment from a former player who said Small didn't mince words about that poor showing or another one.

Anyway, I'm quite sure the Illini will take his comments to heart.

Listen to coach, men.

One thing that should help the Illini today is teeing off first. All this week the course had gotten more difficult as the day went on.

Plus, I always think it's better in golf to post a score and let the nerves affect the late-finishers.

I guess they're doing a weird scattered start that eliminates the Illini's advantage of having the first group tee off.

But Baumgarten had a birdie, right? And Meyer's score isn't posted yet. Gonna be a long afternoon.

On the positive side, Hardy just got one back and Arizona State and North Carolina are doing worse

I'm hoping to see a little Illinois action on Golf Channel coverage, but ILL teed off at 11:30? and tv doesn't start until 3 p.m. Looks like most of the coverage will be of later tee times including, of course, Golf Channel's own: OKLA ST.

Looks like we're making our move! -3 for the day.

-6 for the day seemed to be a pretty good target at the outset. Already half way there.

we've got three guys under par right now (Hardy, Meyer and Baumgarten) while Gio (+3) and Feagles (+4) are struggling. If one of those guys could get hot, this could be the day.

It says a lot about the state of the program that we will be disappointed if the team doesn't make the top 8. Shucks, if about any other team on campus just makes a sweet 16 (or even the tournament field) we would be jumping for joy. Even with this being our worst performance in years there is still only one other midwestern team that made the cut yesterday.

All true and a good reminder.
Fans are never satisfied. I know that I am not. I'm hoping for a Monday Miracle. Guessing we need to get to +11.

#10 is the hardest hole on the course. It sure looks like a disadvantage to start on the back 9, as we did. Played #10 six over par. Just no excuse for that start, but it is what is keeping us out on the outside right now. Just have bogies for Nick and Feagles and we're 3 strokes better, sitting in 10th, one stroke off the pace for the finals.

Hope it doesn't come back to haunt us, but suspect it will.

And just like that, Gio says "bye bye" for this season, shooting a triple bogey on #17.
He's now eight over par and the Illini are a four man team.
