Mizzou likely hiring Dennis Gates, current HC at Cleveland State, former FSU assistant.

ESPN
I think that's a great hire. I would have been happy with him at Illinois (though it was unlikely we would hire an assistant with no HC experience). He will definitely try to fight us for Chicago recruits.

I don't know what Brad Underwood thinks about going back to K State, but there are a few things that I think make such a move difficult for him to consider: he signed a new contract for $4M plus, the AD is spending big money on the Ubben Center (does K State have a basketball practice center?), he has a good group of returning players plus 3 very good recruits, his '23 class is looking good, K State is a football school, and he's 58, (does he want to do a rebuild at this stage of his career?) and he would be leaving the BIG money pool. Boosters at K State may have some deep pockets, but I doubt they could match the amount of money that the BIG shares each year. I could see him being interested in the K State job when Martin left and it could be that he's a bit upset that he didn't get considered for the job when they hired Weber. Kruger took the K State job when he was younger, but he didn't seem bothered to take the Oklahoma job later. The whole alum thing would be a factor, but I don't see it happening now. Of course, I could be wrong, but does he want to play second fiddle to Kansas? I was at Ft. Riley for 2 years and enjoyed hanging out in Manhatten, but I still think it would be harder to recruit top talent to K State than it is to Illinois. I still wish he would make a statement if he has no interest in leaving Illinois. I'm sure other teams are using the K State rumors to recruit against the Illini.

He's been the HC at Cleveland State for 3 years.

well we're not hiring him now. We didn't hire him when we got Underwood because he was only assistant. I'm saying, I would have been happy with Gates at that time, but he was an unlikely choice.

Is this something we should be talking about?

"A majority of the K-State nation wants former Kansas State player and assistant coach — and native of McPherson, Kansas — Brad Underwood to come home as the new coach. There is plenty of talk in fan circles, and more specifically in big donor circles, that a deal is basically done as soon as Underwood’s Illinois team is finished playing in this NCAA Tournament."

So already discussed

The article mentions underwood is paid well (top 10) and likes his boss

Doesn’t mention that has turned around illinois program and has program heading higher. At 58 does he want to start building a smaller market / smaller conference / conference future in question with Texas/Oklahoma while leaving the best conference?

Anything is possible but I am more concerned with preparing for Houston than I am about replacing underwood

Well, not everyone thinks the sky is blue but I think the consensus at the time was that we would have liked to have him as our coach.
I definitely don't remember there being a consensus about everyone wanting CM as our next coach. There definitely were some, but a lot of us were skeptical bc of his frequent sudden departures from his previous jobs that seemed to be going downhill as he left town. The thing I remember is that people were mad that it was rumored that he "chose Mizzou over us" which I think was based on some debatable info.

OK, let's agree to disagree on this one. :illinois:

That was far from a consensus. That was a vocal minority. Many of us thought the fact that he kept bolting as the ship started to sink after 4ish years was a red flag.
Correct. Most on here wanted a proven winner with head coaching pedigree with strong X's and O's background. Most everyone here saw Clownzo for who he is, aka a fly by night smooth talker who could get some good players but can't coach his way out of a paper bag.
