If Illinois does win out it honestly would be the most remarkable end of season run I have ever seen. They will have to defeat probably four top 10 teams, and maintain constant intensity against two other top 25 teams. But the hard part is this is a series of travel days where sleeping patterns will be tested. And the big ten tournament is a series of back to backs. This last run is going to be grueling. I think the NCAA tourneyment will be a nice break.

Going by KenPom, Illinois is in the midst of an 18 game stretch, going back as far as the Baylor game, where every opponent has either been an A game (home vs top 25, neutral vs top 50, road vs top 75) or a B game (home vs 26-75, neutral vs 51-100, road vs 76-150), with the last game in said stretch being @MSU (since home vs Nebraska is outside those bounds), then finishing with 3 more A games.

So, in a 26 game regular season schedule, 21 of those games are effectively NCAA tournament worthy games.

Which makes Penn State's schedule all the more ridiculous, since they have a 23 game schedule and 21 of them are A or B games (and they lost one of the two that weren't!).

re: the tournament

I know there are 4 separate venues in the metroplex where the games are going to be played the first weekend, and perhaps it stays that way for the second weekend or they decraese it to two venues for the round of 16 - regardless of that, do the players of the teams that win stay in Indy the entire run of the tournament ?

Not sure in Illinois's case it's a 2 hour drive so they can easily do either, but my guess is they are bubbling the teams like the NBA did

Bob Asmussen posted today a great suggestion. Use a portion of our ticket allotment for Krush. Families first, then Krush.

I hope they cancel the BTT. Nothing to gain and everything to lose. Also then B1G could force all teams to play all their makeup games.

Great tool - thx!
So is the winner decided by Win%? I'm guessing if Illinois wins out and Michigan wins out save our H2H, the B1G committee would be hard pressed not to award both Michigan and Illinois with the title with Illinois having played 3 more games.

Not sure about the conference title, but I want that #1 seed if that's how it plays out. If we win out, we've darn well earned it.

They play it because it's the right thing to do. Nobody should want to dodge it. It's part of every season and after jamming almost every game in...they need to finish the season as intended and not duck anybody.

Certainly its arguable if playing the BTT is the "right thing to do." I am firmly on the side of it is not the right thing to do. If there is a covid flareup and teams miss the big dance then [insert much cursing here]. To be clear I am not talking about Illinois ducking the BTT. I am talking about the Big Ten cancelling the tournament.

This is a pretty logical argument.

Might also depend upon the NCAA Tournament rules regarding positive Covid tests and contact tracing. Are they going to be (and can they be) more lenient than the Big 10 conference rules?

All Tier 1 travel party participants will be required to undergo and document seven consecutive negative COVID-19 tests prior to arrival into Indianapolis. The NCAA will work with IU Health to provide health related support including the administration of daily PCR tests for Tier 1 individuals upon arrival and throughout the tournament. Tier 1 participants include student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, medical staff, equipment staff and officials.

The NCAA will arrange charter bus and/or air travel for all Tier 1 participants. All teams participating will be housed in Marion County hotels for the duration of their active participation in the tournament. Meals will either be in-room or in physically distanced meal rooms with assigned seating.

Except during practice or competition time on court, all Tier 1 participants will observe physical distancing and universal masking at all times. Exceptions are while alone in the hotel room or during pre-arranged and approved mealtime.

All Tier 1 participants will wear KINEXON contact tracing devices throughout the tournament, including practices and games. These devices, coupled with video analysis, provide data that allows total time measurement of those who are within 6 feet of a newly infected individual with COVID-19. The data will be utilized to assist with contact tracing and the need to quarantine participants. If close contact time with another individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 is less than 15 minutes over 24 hours, then quarantine may not be required.

COVID-19 testing and contact tracing will not be required for asymptomatic Tier 1 individuals who are at least two weeks post-infection and within 90 days of the first known date of infection, or participants who are at least two weeks post their second COVID-19 vaccine (or singular COVID-19 vaccine for FDA approved vaccines that require one dose only). These groups will still be required to wear masks and physically distance.

The protocols also address game attendance. Up to six family members per Tier 1 participant (up to 420 family members total) will be allowed in each venue per game. The family members will be prohibited from interacting in person with any of the Tier 1 participants during the entire tournament. They will be seated in physically distanced family clusters. The final attendance policy will be announced after Feb. 1."

So, it sounds pretty similar in some ways (daily testing, quarantine environment, mask enforcement, etc...and some fancy contact tracing technology as well). I don't see anywhere what the protocol will be if a team ends up with multiple infectious Tier 1 cases. They'll probably just figure it out on the fly based on the specific circumstances.

That would be awesome, but I have no faith that DIA would do it. They value money first. Just look at the decision to move Block I to the North End Zone. We play in a stadium that is rarely close to full and they couldn't reserve one section of decent seats for students. By comparison, Texas A&M fills the entire east side of their stadium three decks high with students (around 35,000 students if I recall). That's a lot more lost revenue than leaving Block I in place. They moved Block I while I was a student and, yes, I am still salty.

Gotcha. When you were talking about nothing to gain and everything to lose, I thought you meant regarding NCAA Tournament and a potential drop in seeding. The Covid issue....it's a very logical argument. A flare-up coming from it would be a problem (obviously).

I find this article interesting, presenting an argument to do away with the selection committee

Like all things political, I don't think the issue is trying to get a perfect answer.

The question is "who decides" what the perfect answer is.

Going by KenPom...

Tangent, but I don't recall ever seeing a team as highly rated as Gonzaga is. I checked over the Kenpom era, and there really isn't a team as dominant. Here's everyone over +32 below. Some ridiculously stacked teams in there.

21 Gonzaga +38.4
15 Kentucky +36.9
08 Kansas +35.2
21 Baylor +34.9
19 Virginia +34.2
02 Duke +34.2
18 Villanova 33.8
15 Wiscy +33.7
11 tOSU +33.5
10 Duke +33.3
19 Gonzaga +32.9
13 L'ville +32.9
05 NC +32.8
05 Illini +32.7
12 Kentucky 32.6
15 Duke +32.5
15 Az +32.4
04 Duke +32.3
17 Gonzaga +32.1
16 Villanova +32.0

21 Baylor was above 15 Kentucky before being shut down for Covid. The top 2 could be the best teams college basketball has seen since atleast 2002.

I was most interested in seeing the rules/procedures in the event of infection.
