Lovie is trying to get a good rivalry going with NU. Doesn't he call it that school up north, ala Woody Hayes?

Maybe he should add fuel to the fire by stating it was an NU alum posting these rumors to hurt recruiting.

Lovie doesn't like the media anyway, so what would he have to lose?

Might as well.

Call out Rittenberg and tell him to stfu.

Miserable in Champaign? Lovie says he's not

Smith addressed the report when asked about it Monday at his weekly media briefing:

“I’m going to respond to it one time,” he said. “Am I happy right now with where we are? No, no one on our football team is happy where we are right now. My time in Champaign, it’s a little bit bigger that just where we are right now.

“Our football team, as I said, we’re going to win a lot of games eventually. There’s not much more than that. I would not get into speculation. Go on what you’re getting from me right now.”

Smith said he has known all along he was taking on a major rebuilding project.

if lovie can mirror the turnaround that Fleck engineered at WMU, we will be very fortunate

There is a great similarity in terms of Year 1 for both guys, as that first Fleck year he just threw all their young guys out on the field to see what he had.

Where there is a difference is that Fleck went out and recruited the best class in the conference that first year.

If Lovie can at least get us in the top half of the B1G with this recruiting class I think that would be similar to Fleck getting the top in the MAC.

Although, one thing to think about, Fleck's first class (his 2013 class where he only had a couple months to recruit) was 7th in the MAC. That is understandable and while Lovie has had WAY more time to recruit this 2017 class, it is still the "first/shorthanded" class.

Several top targets for the Illini (or potential targets) committed just before/right around/after Lovie was hired. Had we been able to grab him before the 2016 class had signed like the normal timeline, this 2017 class could be much better already.

Love's first TRUE class will be 2018. I have said it before and I'll say it again, Lovie was the first coach on the 2017 carousel and not the last on the 2016.

I agree with all of the above.

Very good post

Well right now we're 13th out of 14 teams in the B1G 2017 recruiting class rankings, according to 247.

True, but we only have 11 commits. I feel like even if we fill up with quantity instead of quality and they are all 3 stars, our quantity alone will boost us up 3-4 spots.

Now, grab a few truly highly rated 3* guys and we will go even further.

Agreed. We can flip the Beckman and Cubit quality players from MAC schools in January if need be. Would much rather see the staff go after the best talent still available on the market right now.

nope.

"BOOOOOO!! HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!! This is a cop-out hire.
This reeks way too much of a Burke hire."

Translation: We've backchanneled Fleck/Brohm/Rhule and several others and have been told to bug off.

I wonder where Fleck will end up. He has shown to recruit well and has built a juggernaut at WMU but he was also given the patience of 3-4 years of building to get to this point.

If he ends up at a place that feels like they should win immediately, will he be given time to build HIS team? Also, will he be able to pull his whole staff to his new place?

The power 5 world gets ruthless and is a lot less patient. He can only hope that he won't have to rebuild an entire team like he did at WMU or that whatever school hires him gives him time.

I'm going to follow his career like I will Dino Babers.

Calling WMU a juggernaut is a bit of an overstatement. Yes, they have a nice team this year, but playing in the MAC is still playing in the MAC.

Fleck has set himself up at getting a mid to low level P5 job, where it would be unreasonable to expect immediate wins. He'll be given 4 years to build a program his way and if he can show progress then he may be looking at a jump to a higher level program. Before that he has to prove his ways can translate to improving a P5 bottom dweller.

I mean he beat a couple P5 bottom dwellers earlier this year if you were paying attention. He also out-recruits several. I don't know what other proof you need.

NW has mostly mid level talent and we are a team of MAC level players with a first year head coach. 2 wins over B10 teams is nice, but they aren't the most talented teams to beat.

Fleck has shown he can recruit but he still needs to prove that he can do that and show progress for a mid level P5 before he can truly be called a great coach.

Jerry Kill and Dave Doeren built a similar "juggernaut" at NIU and have been mostly mediocre at their P5 jobs

I should have clarified that he was a MAC juggernaut. By no means has he created a P5 juggernaut.

In the first post I quoted you said "playing in the MAC is still...the MAC" but down-playing our team as being equal to the MAC. I recognize what you're trying to say, but it goes against your first attempt at making a point. Also, you said he should be able to at least compete in the bottom level of P5, and guess what, he has. Western Michigan might be the 3rd best team we'll have played this year behind UM and UW.
