CFB Coaching Carousel 2016-17

With unsuccessful campaigns at P5 USC and Tennessee Kiffin would be better off staying at Bama at least for another year. However it would be interesting to see what happens with Kelly at ND next year if he doesn't produce.

The reality is...Kiffin does not want to work for Saban anymore and would either be at LSU next year or will be a head coach. I think a job like Florida Atlantic would be smart for Kiffin to prove he can win and run a program then move up. 8 out of the 12 head coach openings have went to coaches with head coaching experience (including Shawn Elliott who was interim head coach for almost an entire season at South Carolina). AD's and schools want coaches that have head coaching experience and the trend is to hire coaches from the power 5 group...it is a smart move for Kiffin, IMO.

This had nothing to do with trying to screw USF. Taggart and Strong have been friends for a long time and Taggart probably offered this to Strong well before USF called.

Strong also has ties with USF...sad to see him leave Texas but he couldn't produce the wins....tough job down here...wish Herman the best.

Strong never had full support and was on the hot seat as soon as he showed up. Tremendous football coach and person. Sometimes when you have a coach like Mack Brown who is around for a long time and the university is used to doing things a certain way, a "bridge" coach comes in to no fault of his own attempts to change the culture and just never gets the support necessary because he does things differently. Typically the next guy that comes in (Herman) doesn't receive the same resistance that the first coach (Strong) gets because the university and the powers at be are accustomed to change and learn their lesson. It is terrible, but it is the reality of big time college sports.

If LOVIE could've landed strong as a d coordinator that woulda been amazing....cause I'm not hearing much noise from NICKERSON perhaps he's waiting for an NFL call

Taggert offered Charlie Strong the OC job at Oregon. Savage move, though the USA head job is likely better, still funny.

Interesting that they want him for the OC job. His history is almost exclusively on defense.

Never want to be the guy who follows THE GUY

I don't think Lovie Smith will fail at Illinois. At all.

But if I'm wrong? Jeff Monken should be our next coach.

I think if we with 8 games McGee should get an raise and a assistant head coach nod at Illinois I'd like to see him take over after LOVIE retires

FAU and FIU have gone from Charlie Partridge and Ron Turner as their head coaches to Lane Kiffin and Butch Davis.

Throw in Charlie Strong and Scott Frost at USF and UCF and that's a pretty impressive collection of coaches at Florida's "lesser" schools.

Not ideal for schools like us looking to swoop in for Florida players that the big boys overlook, however.

yup, the main reason all four of those schools now have coaches with big profiles is 95% due to the talent in that football rich state. those coaches can do 65% of their recruiting in state, with the other 35% in SoCar, Ga, Al , Miss & La. Never more than a 2 hours drive or 45 min flight away from home. Never having to deal with temps colder than 45 degree.

By the way, Kiffin is a heck of a hire for Pat Chun at FAU, who was runner-up to Whitman for our AD job.

We can guarantee Kiffin is going to turn them into a dominant juggernaut because we open our 2020 schedule at home against, you guessed it, FAU.

Ha! It seems whoever we play ends up being at the height of their history when we play them. Colorado won a national title, Fresno State was in a good period, La Tech etc

Chip Kelly has been fired, and I believe his NFL coaching career is finished. I really can't see why he would want to continue situations where he has partial control over his roster compared to college where he will be paid and treated like a king. I don't believe there are any jobs left on the college market that would interest him this offseason, but a name to keep a mind on obviously in next year's carousel.
