“Dick Butkus dies...”
And so, yet another connection to ‘When The Bears Were Really The Bears’ has left us.
There are two players in particular that quickly come to mind that represent the true heart and soul of the Chicago Bears... Dick Butkus and Walter Payton. They were the most ‘Bears’ of all the Bear players – at least in the past 60 years or so.
They left everything and more on the playing field each and every time they put on the uniform... body, soul, and spirit.
And not only did they most represent the Chicago Bear football franchise itself... they represented the entire City of Chicago. A City that for generations was identified with hard work, passion, dedication, and a love for the gridiron Game.
Go around the World and most people wouldn’t have been able to tell you who the Mayor was or what was the big news going on in the City. But they knew who Butkus and Payton were. And those Chicago icons were the Face of the City until the Greatest Roundball Player of All Time came to West Madison Street. And even after that... the World still knew who These Bears were.
The Bears have long lost their connection to past glories. They keep on trying to get there but it just hasn’t happened yet. And losing someone like Butkus is just another disconnect from what represented the best that the franchise has had to offer.
And where was Butkus from? The great South Side of Chicago. And we all know what colors he wore in college.
It’s been a tough sports year in the City. Major disappointments from all the pro sports franchises. And now, losing a legend makes things just a bit tougher.
It’s best to remember that this Man lived his life to the fullest. He lived to a good age and left a World of adoring and admiring fans. He will always be a beloved figure in the State of lllinois and around the World.
And – though they might be a bit hesitant to admit it – there will be be plenty of football fans from Up North who wear Green and Gold who will say a prayer in the coming days. A prayer of thanks for his being a great football player and maybe the fiercest competitor that the Greenies will ever have faced.
Via Con Dios, Mr. Bear.
