He might not be a candidate but Anthony Grant should be a candidate for the Ohio State job.

I have gotten quite a few messages about Louisville today ...

Here is what I know for a fact:

Drew met with Louisville people today ... They offered him 9.5 per year ... 5 million per year of NIL ...

They have a donor who is willing to pony up BIG for Drew ... Other coaches will not get anywhere near that salary and likely closer to 4 million NIL ...

Drew is "thinking on it" ... It is definitely in play for him ...

Pat Kelsey has met with Louisville ... I personally have a relationship with Pat ... He confirmed the meeting ... I will keep the rest of the details private per his wishes ...

Schertz has met with them as well ... Just a quicker meeting ... He asked me to keep details private but that I could share that they met ...

Jerome Tang will meet with Louisville sometime this weekend ... Zoom meeting is likely vs. in person but subject to change ... He is in play but think he is outside the top 3 ...

Mick Cronin is 2nd on their list ... They are currently working BTS to figure out a way around the buyout due to legislation of the contract being signed when UCLA was a member of Pac 12 and now that they are Big 10 some of/if not all of that buyout should be null and void ... I think they will have to pay some of that buyout but my sources tell me it should be reduced for any team interested ... Cronin has also stated he would be willing to take less money up front in order to pay off said buyout ...

Dusty May has long been involved with Louisville... They know where each other stands ... They have talked a handful of times already ... He wants more NIL ...

This one is going to be interesting ...

Side note: I can't say enough how much I enjoy getting all of your guy's messages and talking hoops, recruiting, coaching carousel, X&O ... And sometimes even some more personal stuff that people on here share with me ... It's awesome ... Never hesitate to reach out ...

You and a handful of other insiders are >90% of the reason I'm refreshing this website 20+ times a day. Thanks for all the info. I/we really appreciate it. The multi-season mystery of who are Indy and 0440 IRL is also a very entertaining side story. lol.

Stanford has fired Haase ... Was going to be done Monday ... Not sure why it took so long ...

Cal just extended Madsen in the offseason to avoid him being able to easily take this job ...

Hearing Kyle Smith is the name for this job ... Mitch Henderson as a backup ... Dark horse is Joe Pasternack ...
I'm not sure why any school like Vanderbilt or Stanford wouldn't have Henderson as its first call. I would think that an Ivy League background would be a big plus working at a school like that.

I'm not saying that a school like Northwestern, Stanford, or Vanderbilt can regularly compete for conference championships and high NCAA seeds, but I don't think there's a reason why these teams can't be competitive and have some levels of decent success. A guy like Stackhouse was not a good fit for Vanderbilt given he's never been a head coach in that type of environment.

Quite the post, Indy. Wow. Depth, breadth and specificity. You're quite the insider.

What a great read. This is killer info. (Quintuple that when it pertains to the Illini!)

We really appreciate your insights and your willingness//ability to share. Our sincere thanks!

I obviously would have lost my over/under bet on Juwan Howard (I set the termination announcement deadline at 4 PM ET yesterday).

Any rumors/news about what Michigan is thinking yet? It's inconceivable to me that they would keep him around another year given the on-court results and off-court behavior. I have to think Michigan could have negotiated a fraction of Juwan's buyout by threatening to terminate him for cause after the Sanderson incident.

Just liking this post doesn't seem to be enough. This is such a great balance of providing information without violating any trusts or confidences. Very impressive - thank you!

Just curious - have you heard anything about Darian DeVries? I live in the Des Moines area, so I keep tabs on Drake and am kicking myself for not going to a few Drake games this winter (I won't make that mistake next year - might even look at going in with some people for season tickets and split the games). He seems like if he wants a move up that he would be pretty high on some lists. Objectively speaking, I think he would be Iowa's top choice if Fran decides to retire/move on after this season. He seems like a good coach and a solid guy, and if I were an AD I'd probably at least want to have a conversation with him.

Not an Insider but pretty sure I remember Indy saying yesterday that he’s most likely headed to Oklahoma St. or at least they’re interested in him.

The Athletic had him in their call list yesterday, but it didn’t seem like he was higher than their second choice. But that wasn’t exactly insider information.

The contract is here: https://ca-times.brightspotcdn.com/7d/fa/56435b2f41b28b5f3575b651cf8b/micks-2022-contract.pdf

Every use of the term "Pac 12" is followed by "(and any successor conference)".

The contract is subject to California law, whose employment law can be a little different, but the idea that a conference change renders the buyout void seems pretty far fetched to me.

Like, would he try to say that the conference change so substantially increases the travel burden that it represents a breach of the contract by UCLA? That's a pretty strained argument.

If he really wants to go UCLA might be willing to negotiate, the buyout only goes down from here and who wants a coach who doesn't want to be there, but the contract explicitly says the buyout fee can be collected from the next school rather than Cronin himself, they have a lot of leverage to demand Louisville pay up.

(Remember when "oh, get enough lawyers on it and the ACC Grant of Rights won't be an issue" was the conventional wisdom? Courts want parties to be able to rely on their clearly expressed contractual rights.)

Interesting...I have heard this before. Please elaborate on how we are restricted compared to others.
Two areas Icon is behind some others legally (state/federal). The collective isn't able to partner with the school/DIA, per Illinois laws, they have to be separate. Some states like Missouri don't have this restriction. Second, early on, some collectives were able to get non-profit status. I know Icon started under this premise, but haven't heard if they were able to get the status officially approved. The IRS came out with updated guidelines that will likely prevent additional collectives from becoming non-profit, which makes sense, but I'm curious to see what happens with those that got early approval.

They're listed as an LLC on their website and it has a .com domain, so I would presume they are not currently a non-profit.

But what's their tax liability anyway? Don't they just distribute all the money that comes in to athletes? Maybe that's wrong and they're sitting on a taxable kitty of funds, like I said yesterday, it's a weird kind of organization.

On the one hand Illinois is a state friendly to college athletes getting paid. On the other hand, it's very low down the list of states where college sports recruiting is at the top of the political agenda. Hopefully that doesn't cause problems.

(The idea that we may someday live in a world where deep red Southern states repeal their right-to-work laws because State U is losing football recruiting battles is the funniest thing in the entire world. God I love college football)

Something's going on there that defies what we all see. They must have made a decision after the Sanderson incident to give him another year and it's just playing out poorly.

Regarding Indy's post, that's a jaw-dropping look at how these things go down. Drew is obviously top-notch, but that's still some mind-boggling bidding. Good for him. On the flip side, makes you wonder if Underwood had better tournament runs would he be on the shortlist and we'd be more nervous. Hope the team gets one this year!
