This might be a dumb question, but why is Painter never mentioned as a potential for a blue blood job? I need him out of the B1G.

Brands are built focused on recruiting the best talent. The top players dream of playing at North Carolina, Duke, UCLA, etc... They purposely build through the best talent with the belief that when that coach retires (e.g., Coach K), then next coach can come into their factory and continue recruiting the same level of talent (e.g., Scheyer) and maintain the system.

It becomes an odd fit when you have a coach that (a) recruits at a lower level (willingly or not) and (b) gets the absolute best out of that talent. It's less sustainable from coach-to-coach. When Painter leaves, there is no magic about the Purdue brand that brings out the best from average talent.

I’m trying to think of how to phrase this but Painter is a Purdue lifer. He would do well at a blue blood but he recruits a different way and different type of kid than the blue bloods do. He also has it made at Purdue.
Like father, like son.
Purdue's Gene Keady and Matt Painter just did something ...

He fought hard to get it made too, remember when he had one foot in the Mizzou job trying to leverage more resources at Purdue?

Matt Painter plays unsexy basketball with unsexy players, and that's not the aesthetic the blue bloods are looking for. The first question they're asking in a coaching search is how to remain an apex destination for the apex of talent. They also take questions about weak tournament performance extremely seriously, which for the moment is a reason BU shouldn't be much of a flight risk.

I'm more curious why Muss is CONSTANTLY floated as a candidate for like every job, haha. Arkansas has a good tradition, good fan support, good facilities and (according to insiders here) some of the best NIL in the country ... why would it be harder to swipe a coach from Arkansas than, say, Arizona?

Muss don’t stay at one place very long

All of this is super valid …

Also - there’s a LOT of talent in Indiana … There’s the select few that leave and go to blue bloods but for the most part … You can get the Top 100 kids to come and be multi year/4 year guys … Swanigan, Ivey, TKR, Furst, Smith, Loyer, Sasha …

I mean Painter redshirted TKR … He was Mr. Basketball in the state … And he got Furst who plays the same position to come with TKR in the same class … Not many coaches could’ve pulled that off … He doesn’t get enough credit for how good of a recruiter/developer he is …

Next year … He’s gonna have an NBA ready guy to develop … I’m interested to see how he does with that …

I think Louisville is a great job. Was probably a blue blood up until 2017 and then poof.

If Mick Cronin is not loving UCLA, this might be a great spot for him.
Yep I remember getting to watch them in person while at grad school at Southern Miss.
Danny Crum was the HC? I think we won, too. It was a big deal to play them back then.

Wonder how big a bag Louisville will throw at Drew…

Dee is my guy … Of course I’m gonna promote him …

I’ve been told he’s likely to get an interview at UIC …
Good deal ! Was curious how he was thought of in the coaching community. Also curious if he'd be better off joining a high level program as an assistant at this point. Thanks for your info.

Holtmann can do better than DePaul. It is a graveyard for coaches

Joey Meyer, 231-158, never coached again after getting fired at DePaul. The last successful DePaul coach
Pat Kennedy 67-85 fired, Montana fired, Towson fired, Pace fired, unemployed
Dave Leitao 1 - 58-34, 2 NIT 1 NCAA berth, left for UVA got fired there after 4 seasons
Jerry Wainwright59-80 fired, unemployed
Oliver Purnell 54-105 fired, unemployed
Dave Leitao 2 127-147 fired , unemployed
Tony Stubblefield 30-66 fired, unemployed

Contrast it with Illinois coaches

Lou Henson retired/forced out, came back to New Mexico State for 5 more seasons before retiring for health reasons
Lon Kruger - left for NBA, successful at UNLV and Oklahoma, retired
Bill Self - left for Kansas, Nat champ, 16 Big 12 championships 3 final fours
Bruce Weber - fired, went on to coach 10 seasons at Kansas State
John Groce - fired, in his 8th season at University of Akron

Pressure growing to make Diebler permanent Buckeye HC. Especially if they make a run in NCAA. Not always the best idea to promote the assistant for the team getting hot for 2 months - See Mike Davis Indiana who had no HC experience before being promoted at Indiana to interim HC.

Never been a HC
