PSA to Hoosiers: this isn't the 1970s. You're not perceived as a top-5 super blue blood program right now. There's work to do to regain your place in the kingdom - just like at Illinois we're no longer perceived as a top 12-15 program. Lots of work to do.

This has been easier for Illini fans to grasp because we've been eating dirt for so long. Hoosiers have been believing their old newspaper clippings all this time. Now they have to actually look in the mirror. And in there we don't always like what we see.

The guy who follows a legend (with the rare exception of a legacy) can never meet expectations. It seems to be an immutable law of sports.

Self did pretty well. Did Roy qualify as a "legend" at KU, though?

But your larger point stands, regardless. Tough to replace legends.

I don't think Roy is even close to legend status at Kansas. Consider lots of their fandom is not happy with Self who has won 13 consecutive P5 conference titles plus a national championship.

Roy's Kansas resume has to be considered a failure.

FWIW, while Williams may have not been a "legend" at Kansas, I don't think you could reasonably classify his time there as a "failure". He was head coach for 15 years (1988 to 2003) before reluctantly leaving for North Carolina, his alma mater. His record at KU was 418–101 (.805), an average of 27.8 wins per season. KU won 9 regular-season conference championships over his last 13 years. His teams went 201–17 (.922) in Allen Fieldhouse, once winning 62 consecutive games there. And I do remember KU fans being pretty upset when he left for North Carolina.

is NW trying to lock collins up long term? give him enough money and he should be set, barring K retiring

I doubt that he leaves NW for any amount of money until the Duke job becomes available. Then, no amount of money will be able to keep him at NW.

I was living in KC at the time and they were totally losing their minds. They were so pissed that Self was going to replace him with"ugly Big 10 wrestling" basketball. I called one of the talk shows and said "in two years you'll be saying Roy Who? Self will be so much more open and much better to cover than Roy that the press will fall in love with him and he'll win too".

Roy was pretty prickly with the press in the area and often affected a totally phony "Aw shucks" persona. Now they get Self, who could sell sand to an Arab and the rest is history. And we've been wandering in the desert ever since. Hopefully BU will lead us to the Promised Land.

Dayton is expected to cast a wide net, but one name that could be viable is former Illinois coach John Groce

Interviewed for Miami (Ohio) job and would certainly be a great fit at Akron or as IU assistant. But this would be great spot for him.

I think the IU fan base would welcome Geoce here. I hope he considers doing it even for a year while he waits for the right job.

Frankly I don't think it's a coincidence OSU started a slow decline when he left. Would love Groce to help Archie recruit for a season get some momentum building.

The Dayton base would be absolutely FURIOUS if Groce became their HC.

Hate to sound like a program elitist (oh my God, my post is about to sound SO Illinois, haha), but it's so annoying when a historically irrelevant program or a program that has no built-in advantages that should lead its fans to expect good results comes to be SO entitled after they happen to have one good coach who transforms what that program is (Archie with Dayton) and then they just trash all these other programs like Illinois. They'd be lucky to get John Groce.

A few of my best friends are from Dayton. They think they're basically a P5 program now in the A10.

Disagree. Dayton is arguably the best/steadiest non-P5 job in terms of fan support, resources and history. They're top 50 all-time in wins, and the first non-P5 team to show up on this list which attempted to value each program based primarily on revenue (we're #15).

If I am a UNCW fan, I would be furious if Groce became HC

Not trashing Dayton, just as I wouldn't trash VCU or Butler ... but the contempt they have for Illini basketball is astonishing if you read their boards. You would have thought we were Illinois State trying to poach their coach in some of those threads.

Anyway, the point is that John Groce was a failed but respectable coach at a high-profile power five job, and I think it'd be ridiculous for Dayton fans to be "furious."
