Coaching Carousel

This is a really bad look for Georgetown. They ran out a guy who wasn't doing a bad job and now nobody wants the position.

I just started grad school at G'town and from the locals I have had a chance to talk to (granted small sample size) sounds like fan base was in a similar place with where we were with Groce.

G'town's one NCAA tourney appearance in last four years only bests Groce by one. They haven't been able to reel in local talent like Illinois. And like Illinois they have a decent program history that has not met expectations of late.

Apparently there was even a student petition to have JT III fired. The feeling is that it is time to move on from living in/hanging onto the past. As someone else mentioned above this is probably the first step in a long term process of starting a new era.

I don't follow college basketball much outside of the Illini (and even that has been low in recent years) so take it for what its worth.

If you're going to hire an alum as HC, this is how you do it...

Many years of COACHING EXPERIENCE! Given the situation at Gtown, I think they made the right hire at this time. The fumbled the search process a bit though.

So they hire the program's giant (figuratively and literally) from the past. That's the part I don't get.

Still, I appreciate the angle on it. Sounds like the AD may have had donors up in his face about this.

I am interpreting the hire as a weaning off period? Combining a couple of other posts above I don't think the current hire could have been completely new blood with JT's shadow still looming and maybe Ewing is looking to get an NBA head coaching job after his stint at G'town?

i think the effect that a former Dream Teamer can have on recruits in high school right now is vastly overrated. Seniors in high school are 16-18yo, meaning they were born around 2000. Ewing is a legend but to say that high school kids today will recognize that is a little bit presumptive

example: i would bet that a high school senior would be much more impressed if anthony davis (current nba all star) walked into the gym than ewing (former nba legend).

Chris Dortch @cdortch1:09 PM - 2 Apr 2017 Chattanooga has hired its new basketball coach, former Wisconsin and Akron assistant Lamont Paris.

Has been with the Badgers the last seven years.

I went to college with Lamont (College of Wooster D-III), he's got a great future! Great hire for UTC, great for us that Wisconsin loses a great coach, I'd love to see him coaching for the Orange and Blue someday.

I get that, but every kid in America still knows who Jordan is because of his shoes and GOAT status. Worst case scenario, Ewing can pull out the attached picture. Not to mention, he's coached in the league for the past 14 years.

The one thing that seems clear to me is that the Georgetown boards will not be speculating on who their Big Man coach is.

I don't disagree with your example, but Davis isn't a coach, and he doesn't have the collegiate resume that Ewing does. Ewing has 3 FFs as well as a NC ring. The kids might be more impressed with Davis on the court, but I'd think recruits are smart enough to be impressed with Ewing's body of work--or at least Mom & Dad would be.

Interesting note--in both the 84 and 85 tourneys, Illinois was knocked out by a team who was then beaten by Georgetown in the next round.

BREAKING: Former #Baylor MBB coach Dave Bliss resigns as head basketball coach from @SCU_Eagles days after @SHOsports Doc #Disgraced aired

How he ever got this job has always been a source of bewilderment to me.

Without question the HBO documentary makes him look like the scum bag that apparently he is. I can't imagine any program that would want to be within 1,000,000 miles of him right now, or ever.

Good for Groce! I'm assuming Dustin Ford and possibly Parnham may follow him there. We'll see him in the dance in a few years.

Really glad Groce was able to get a head coaching job. He's inheriting a program that's on the upswing and putting himself in a great spot to be successful.

And obviously glad that he won't be recruiting for Indiana.

It's a win-win for all parties involved - except Indiana, and that's what matters. :thumb:

Nice! Good for Groce. I think he'll do well there.

Heard from someone close to the situation this morning and it sounded like they were happy where they were landing but sad to leave UI.
