Georgetown is not like Indiana where there are obvious abundant natural resources separate from the legendary ex-coach.

What is Georgetown without John Thompson and his legacy?

I think the same could be said for Indiana and Knight. Though they did have 2 titles prior to the Vietnam War.

JTII is a larger than life character on their campus and in DC in general. He's always on campus and at every game. The practice facility is named after him, complete with a statue. He's had numerous sports talk shows in the city about everything, not just college basketball. The campus is beholden to him. I can't possibly believe they'd fire his son without talking to Big John first and having some sort of plan.

An AD alienating Big John would be career suicide and he'd be not only run off the campus, but the city.

Seems it could end up being an issue.

Just got a couple calls from coaches and agents who may have interest in Georgetown, asking same question: "How involved will Big John Thompson be?" His involvement could scare off potential candidates.

But like, Knight can disown the program and the University as he has done, and that's still a plum job.

Is Georgetown? A small private school in a shaky conference that plays in a gym they don't own and can't fill?

I'm a huge romantic for the old Big East. I want schools like Georgetown and St. Johns and UConn to succeed. But they are not the way the wind is blowing currently.

I guess my logic is something along the lines of, "What's the first thing to pop into your head when I say ____?"

But you are right, they have cratered, somewhat because they held onto JT3 for too long and somewhat conference re-alignment, not sure on a percentage breakdown of those two. I was also thinking that you could attribute most of the history of those two programs to both of those coaches.

as an aside, without any bias, I thought Crean got a raw deal being fired from IU. He took over that program when they were probably at their lowest point ever and had them #1 in 5 years. The year after the sanctions, Indiana was arguably the worst team in D-I basketball.

I'll guess for Georgetown....King Rice. Withdrew from Duquesne discussion...maybe he knew something better was on the way.

As an Illinois and Duquesne fan, this coaching search for the Dukes makes our previous coaching search after Weber look phenomenal.

Maybe John Groce?

I believe he'd be a perfect fit here because of his Northeast ties and energetic style but coming here might be too big of a risk because obviously if he succeeds he'll get another P5 shot but failing, like everyone else has for the last 40 years, means he might be an assistant for life.

I keep thinking that North Texas is a good fit for Groce. Down a 2 notches from the B10 to a school that's on some down times after short bursts of success in lower conferences. Fertile ground for recruiting and a hard worker like Groce could succeed. I dunno. Just a guess.

Woof. Coaching version of the hat ceremony fakeout.

At least someone is having fun with his wikipedia entry :D

"Patrick (Pat) Kelsey (born May 15, 1975) is a former college basketball head coach for the University of Massachusetts. He's a dickbag. He coached the Minutemen for less than a week, and remains the only undefeated coach in program history."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Kelsey

Wonder how long it will be before the editors take that down....

Thought they hired someone already.

Does anyone have any info on what's going on with the Indiana coaching search? Archie Miller and Gregg Marshall have both been out of the tournament several days now; if it were going to be one of them, wouldn't it have been done and announced by now?

They hired a search firm which is likely slowing things down. I am still not convinced they will choose Alford. Mediocre coach and the Pierce deal is a huge issue which blew up in UCLA's face when he was introduced.

Really hope somebody picks him up. I'm still nervous about the possibility of tOSU trying to bring him back as a lead assistant.
