Coaching Carousel

Just throwing this out there - is it possible OSU's best move might be to let one of Matta's assistants take over for one year so they can be a major player in next season's carousel?
It's unquestionably the best course of action now that it's apparent they had no real plan, and I don't know why they aren't doing this. Better yet, why aren't they pulling a Bo Ryan midseason instead of doing this 11th-hour nonsense?

I would think this might be the best play at this point. Who willingly gets onto the carousel this late and expects a fantastic hire? Of course, if they have someone lined up, its not a terrible play, but still you're new staff has almost zero time to prepare.

This was my assumption when the news conference was announced. Hand-picked interim coach while Matta tries to get healthy. If Matta gets better and can re-commit to being a fulltime coach, he's the best guy for the future too. If not, you'll know during the season he won't be back and you can begin a normal coaching search, AND check out the interim guy as an option.

Or you could just fire the most successful coach in program history, at the worst time of the year, with no plan for a replacement, and then get turned down by a guy nobody wants anyway...

Do you think tOSU fans are more upset when they thought McDermott was going to be their coach, or now that they realize they can't even get McDermott as their coach?

The first part of your sentence. :thumb:

McDermott would have been a horrible hire. And it seems that was OSU's plan?

Wow.....

Not the best course of action, a terrible one, and really a course of action that will always be available. Mike Brown would be a very good hire for them if it happens, much better than McDermott.

The way they've made it sound is that this injury is chronic with little hope of major improvement. If he's out due to his injury, he's more than likely out for good.

There are very few "good" resolutions to what has turned into a mess: no Hoiberg or Donovan ready to jump out of a birthday cake a la Lovie and snubbed by Greg McDermott. Let that sink in. The Ohio State University just had Greg McDermott of ISU, Creighton, and Dougie McBuckets fame turn his nose up at it. Why didn't tOSU have a real plan? If they did, how did it fall apart so badly?

Sure, Mike Brown would be a good hire and unquestionably better than McDermott. It might even generate some bonafide enthusiasm and save a recruit or two. But at this point, it would just be painfully evident they had to made an ugly scramble for it. There is no way for tOSU to exit this chapter without a black eye.

This board would be in total meltdown mode if U of I were in the same situation.

This is a contradictory statement. If they do make a good hire, nobody will care or remember the process. At the end, it does not matter if the process is faulty or who you did not get, but who you end up with.

I do hear what you're saying. Perhaps the difference is in whether or not one cares about how a result is achieved, no matter the result. That will differ from group to group of people. Certainly there will be some who feel that only the final result is the one that matters. For purely practical purposes, I concede that is true.

Yet I still think tOSU's brand is taking a good, old-fashioned beating here. This doesn't help on the heels of their lost recruit complaining about the lack of recent success.

People will forget quickly when they're in the CFP again next year. Can't expect them to stay down for long in either of their major sports.

I agree football won't stay down, but hoops, there is a history of high highs and low lows. It is conceivable that basketball get back in line behind spring football.

I'm surprised OSU did this without lining someone up first. Something must have happened between Smith/Matta to create this late firing. I can't believe this has to do with just a "dip in recruiting".

Oh man ... if it has come to this :tsk:

I think my first move is to fire the AD. Then if I'm going to lose a year of recruiting have some fun - move Greg Paulus up as the head coach. He played at Duke and has been an assistant at Ohio State for five years. Give the young gun a shot.

I think where a botched process really hurts is that it reduces the probability of achieving a satisfactory result/outcome (a good coach). If they do achieve that result, it does not really matter, but their chances have definitely been reduced, no doubt about it. The timing alone has reduced the pool of available candidates.

And if 6 others have turned them down, that REALLY narrows it down.

Something tells me they will pull a rabbit out of their hat, but they are running out of rabbits right now.

Mike Brown is one more back pain from coaching the best hoops team on the planet.

Paulus as interim looks like a good choice at this juncture.

If the job opening was 2 months earlier, what're the chances they'd go after Groce?

None. Switching teams in conference is pretty rare and he got fired here for a reason. He wasn't doing well at Illinois, so why would they expect him to do any better at OSU?

#898
Well they're already on number 6, figured he'd at least be considered for a assistant role where I think he would excel at at OSU
