really surprised that the OSU AD would let Matta go this late in the game without having a home run hire already lined up.

I'm surprised OSU did this without lining someone up first. Something must have happened between Smith/Matta to create this late firing. I can't believe this has to do with just a "dip in recruiting".

Unless you're going to promote an assistant coach or hire a coach who is not currently working, you don't "have someone lined up'. Ever. Doesn't work that way.

I haven't read all of the prior posts and I'm pretty sure this has been touched on, but I don't understand why OSU didn't go something akin to the Wisconsin route. Have one of the assistants as a co-coach because of Coach Matta's physical difficulties, with the understanding that this is Matta's last year and that no promises are being made to the assistant designated as a co-coach. This not only allows Matta a farewell tour, but also gives OSU an opportunity to appraise the performance of the co-coach assistant in a quasi-head coach role. In addition, this alerts the rest of the coaching community to the fact that this job will be available next March and to anticipate that.

Looks like it could be Holtmann now. This is really turning into an embarrassment for them.

I can only imagine how we would be reacting if this were us. Thank you for Whitman. :hail:

That hire would ease the embarrassment a bit. ;)

I honestly suspect most Ohio State fans would have this sort of reaction:

"You mean we have a basketball team, too?"

Not to seriously suggest they don't know there's a basketball team, but football is so dominant there that this is little more than a blip to OSU. Something to read about until football camp starts up.

I'm just glad this is not us. Talk about horrible timing and not having a plan in place. Thank you JW!

I bet Coldagelli's best beach house that Cuonzo would take the job if offered.

Just makes JWs handling of our hires that much more impressive. Ignorance (fans) is bliss.

Holtmann to OSU, per a source :)

Not sure if sarcastic (because you added that smile at the end) but I would hate it if this happened. Holtmann has done an amazing job at Butler maintaining their success as a legit high major and would be a great hire for tOSU.

For how sporadic and poorly planned their search seemed so far, it would be lame for them to have Holtmann fall into their lap.

Also my wife is a Butler grad and they are my 2nd favorite team so I don't want to see him go.

Doesn't really matter. Might change the buyout I guess. Alford had signed a huge new deal with New Mexico 2 weeks before he took the UCLA job.

Yep- Holtmann was signed through I think like 2023-2024 or something crazy like that. I'd be interested to know what the buyout is at this point. Must not have been high enough to deter the Buckeyes.

Poor Butler. They never asked for this.

I wonder if they continue the pattern of turning things over to an assistant like Terry Johnson or if they go get a former Butler guy like Matthew Graves or Lavall Jordan...gasp...Travis Steele. Jordan was the commonly thought runner-up to Brandon Miller but who knows. Johnson has been on staff for over a decade. Graves was once thought to be next man up and then went into exile in Alabama. Steele is...ugh.

Interested to hear the $$$ on this one.

8 years (!!!), $3 mil per season. Seems like 5 years used to be the standard for a new coach, then it went to 6 recently. I guess when you're hiring in June, have to do a little better.

@NicoleAuerbach

Butler's Chris Holtmann will be Ohio State's next head coach, @usatodaysports has confirmed. 8-yr deal, $3 mil per year. Story coming.

I think this is a good hire for Ohio State, but I'm also not intimidated by it. I thought they might land a really big name given the resources there.
