Ridiculous waste of cash. There’s something wrong with that institution.
There’s a couple things that enter into this.
First, with A & M there is that State of Texas sense of entitlement that winning football championships is a Texas birthright and anything short of that is a crime against nature.
Second is that the overall desire in College Sports programs now to win championships has taken on a way-oversized lust. In places like Alabama, Georgia, LSU, ‘TTHHHEEE...’, Michigan, etc... it is pretty much out of control.
Of course, sports competition is all about winning. But when institutions now feel the pressure to throw obscene amounts of money at a head coach... this is tantamount to trying to buy a championship. And as numerous places should have learned right now... you can’t do that. A good coach is key of course. But you just can’t buy a National Title that way.
Even throwing money at ‘Favorite Sons’ doesn’t work. Scott Frost was seen as a Golden Boy coach at one time... went home to Nebraska to be a savior... and that turned out to be a disaster both for the Huskers and for Frost. Harbaugh has made it work to a certain extent... but he's had help with Big Blue Spygate and other things.
Third is the mentality of many people these days... in this case referring to fans and alums. Many of us too have bought into the ‘Win At All Costs’ mentality... and the idea of having a bit of patience just isn’t part of our Society any more. In anything.
Will anything change any of this any time soon? No. All three of these items will remain on full display for years to come.
Something will change this, someday. For nothing can ever stay the same. But that day is not anytime soon.
