UK is not happy with the last 2 years or this year ... 3 years is to many down years at UK ...

Texas might be less pressure but it's brand new arena, great boosters, maintain relationship with Nike, less insane fans, way better weather ... Texas can also guarantee that he has enough NIL to recruit just like he was at UK and get kids like Wagner, Edwards, and Bradshaw ...

UK short list is real simple if Cal goes ... I was told 4 names: Sean Miller, Nate Oats, Eric Musselman, Dennis Gates
Dennis Gates would be hilarious, suck it Mizzou

He’s essentially leaving UK before he gets fired…..fans are fed up with him.

So... Cal (the man, not the place) would be leaving one aggravated fan base that expects success all the time for another aggravated fan base that expects success all the time. The only difference is that the Bluegrass State’s preferred ball and kind of success is Round while the Lone Star State’s preferred ball and kind of success looks pointy on both ends. And he’ll find the price of housing in Austin is quite awful (but that shouldn’t be a problem for him).

And as for the general sports atmosphere... Texas local television carries live high school football games during the season on Thursdays and Fridays and they dedicate hour-long programs to recite all the evening high school scores. No such luxuries are extended to the State’s roundballers. Maybe see a couple slam-dunks and Threes on the local evening news for about a minute maybe.

In short... Cal would get a nice big payday with a bit less State pressure to succeed.

He can live anywhere he wants ... In the early discussions I know a helicopter was brought up for Cal's personal use to fly into Austin everyday ... :rolleyes:

Texas ‘courting’ John Calipari?

Guess that means that Kentucky is now just another ‘Stepping-Stone’ school job.
Cal's buyout is very hefty I am sure for Ky if they fire him and for Texas if Cal walks. Seems like there is a negotiation that needs to happen, but this could save Ky a lot of money to get a change done.

He is VERY well thought of by a lot of ADs ...
Me too. I've always thought he had a lot of potential. But I think it would be a risky move by KU. He's got to show what he can do for more than a year for a program like theirs, I'd think.

Interestingly, in the whole transfer portal evaluation, Gates had one of the nicer pick ups in Isiaih Mosley. Nice, that is, until they actually started to play. What a crazy unpredictable world these coaches have to work in.

I'm rooting for Gates. I don't want anyone competent at Mizzou.

I apologize, I'm OCD about certain things.
KU=Kansas
UK=Kentucky.

Cal to Texas would be a great get for them and a good spot for Cal. Basketball is a distant second there. That combined with the amount of buzz he will draw I think even just being competent will appease the fans. That UK job is tough tough.

After watching his team progress this year, I can see why he is held in high esteem by ADs.
Personally, after watching PSU last year and the first part if this season, Micah Shrewsbury is impressive. He would make my short list if I was an AD.
I like Micah. He's easy to root for especially since PSU isn't a huge threat (I know).

Seems like a life long Midwest guy though so there are only a handful of jobs outside the Big Ten that would make sense for him, in my mostly uninformed opinion.

He's an excellent coach. Same with Pikiell. PSU and RU are 2 of the tougher jobs in the Big 10 and they have both done well

Think Cal and Texas have all but agreed to a contract…..and I think it’s an interesting fit.
So the change would happen after the season? Obviously Kentucky would have to know as well, so I’m sure they would move quick to identify their next coach. Would seem to crest some interesting conflicts at multiple schools.

A helicopter 🚁? That’s so nuts IMO. So many coaches out there that are just as a good coach (in A LOT of cases better) than that guy.
(A lot of ‘em no one has ever heard of too.) It’s all about the splashy hire; I guess.

I appreciate the consistent results he was able to generate for a good long stint…but he’s not even doing that now.

Texas would be better off with some young-ish up-and-comer that’s hungry but has some experience… I could be wrong, but I think Cal’s best days are likely behind him. I’d be damned if I’d jump through all those hoops just to get a marquee name. JMO

Cal is awesome in his own way. He is like the head mafia boss of college basketball lol
