This thread reminded me of a couple of weeks ago when I was cleaning out my bookcase. I found a 30th Anniversary Great Alaska Shootout program and thumbed through it - there were 7 D1 teams in the Shootout plus UAA. The following coaches were included in that year's version - Bobby Knight, Brad Stevens, Mark Few, John Beilein, and Seth Greenberg. Damn I miss the Shootout (RIP).

It's like everyone looked around at the holiday tourney's (Bahamas, Vegas, Hawaii, Florida, Texas) and went "wtf are we doing up here?"

Yes to all of these.
I am a little concerned Both about Skyldub’s caffeine level (even though it’s really none of business) AND the the fact that Brad might be tempted.

I mean, I get it. But I’m kinda nervous.

Probably give me Lon or Brad stevens from that list. Self would be my number 1 pick for that scenario even though he isn’t an option
Hmm, maybe these name drops are a telltale of who the real Illini0440 is. Lon Kruger, Bill Selk, and Brad Stevens.

There is someone pretty high up (not dropping names) that sits on the floor and travels with the team (has for a long time). Graduate of U of I, GA 87-89, worked with the team for a while then went off to another school and back since 2000.

Someone that's been around that long would know a lot of information, one would think!

That's tough.....I love Self(might get me booted off this board). Can't go wrong with either but I'm riding with Bill.
1.) Let’s hope you don’t get booted for obvious reasons.

2.) I think my Stevens coaches team is gonna beat ya with a triple-stagger into a
re-screen into a triple lutz for the 🏆 win!
Lol. But maybe not too. Self is tough.

Self's in-game coaching was very questionable for some years though. But that's just nitpicking these days.

For the record I don't think Cal is leaving Kentucky. He'd have left for the NBA by now if he was willing to leave.
Didn’t the insiders hint they’re none too happy in Bluegrass Country? I mean, I dunno…but it might not be up to him? It’s been 3 years.
This IS Kentucky. He’s gonna have to do a helluva tap-dance as it is…

Maybe he takes the Texas job to get out of Lexington before the hammer comes down?

Anyone know if Kent Brown drinks Miller Lite during games?

Stevens isn't even a coach anymore.

I think what all these "do a single X and O with a gun to your head" hypos miss is that the guys who have proven themselves as really top tacticians and professors of the game of basketball are able to change and adapt and find ways to impart their knowledge to their players in ways that are useable on the floor.

Because I promise you, the winner of a "draw up 10 great out of bounds plays in 60 seconds" contest would be Bruce Weber, and then his team would run 2 out the 10 properly.

Cal for a very long time had an unbelievable ability to get these hyped one-foot-in-the-NBA prima donnas to play really hard and together. Feels like that's waning a little with age, and as he loses his first-mover advantage in building rosters with that perspective on things.
So what, did he forget how to coach?

LAST!? Several guys on the list are dead!
I am aware of that.
It was just for 🤭 giggles. It was a silly make-believe scenario…I put a disclaimer right in the post. Geez.

What happened was that the NCAA changed the rule where you could not start your season before Dec 1 every year, the exception being games played outside the continental US. So we had the Shootout and the Maui tournament and some overseas stuff. UAA would receive a million or so off the broadcast rights to pay teams and their expenses. Some coaches (including Bobby Knight) loved playing in Alaska - there would always be thousands of fans cheering for the teams. Alaska is beautiful in winter, not as dark as you would think, and there are no mosquitos to ruin your day if you go outside.
Think ESPN pushed for a change and then set up tournaments where they wouldn't have to pay high price. Once the broadcast rights drastically decreased in value, UAA could not afford to continue. Seems strange that the season didn't start until after Thanksgiving just 15 or 20 years ago.

I was definitely not dissing Alaska! Just my regularly scheduled snark!
Probably the most beautiful state sans California! (well...until Mother Nature finishes obliterating Cali anyway)

I doubt it. Time has softened that blow and a fair number of us (though surely not all) have come around to the point of view that he's a great coach and we can't  really blame him for what he did but wish it hadn't gone down that way.

You're far more likely to be booted off for not being absolutely 100% bang on with all of your predictions, you big phony!

Wow…nice choices. Zappa was a super smart dude…I think he could at least carry on a nice convo with Albert. They both have similiar crazy hair so there’s that…and then Marilyn for the hottness factor. Very nice.

Good party group…Zappa with the tunes…and Einstein is a German boy…you know he can put away the brew. All in all…good work.

I like Micah. He's easy to root for especially since PSU isn't a huge threat (I know).

Seems like a life long Midwest guy though so there are only a handful of jobs outside the Big Ten that would make sense for him, in my mostly uninformed opinion.
Many on IU board already wanting him to replace Woodson

Yep, he's the best thing going right now. Really has developed as a coach. I talked with him at the EYBL this summer. Still has great things to say about our program and Daddy Brad.

Great watch. Amazingly humble guys and friends.
Geddy the octopus playing 50 different instruments. 2nd ugliest woman in rock and roll. /s
Alex the guitar virtuoso.
The Professor was made out to be a fan-hating jerk but he simply couldn't understand people's adulation - I think it just creeped him out.

If you don't hate Rush, I highly recommend this Christian Hand Music Breakdown. Enjoy.

... uh and Cal is welcome to go where ever he wants..
