Ehhh not really
I remember some insider at the time said there was a “knock your socks off” coach that wanted the job but RG was worried about him using us as a stepping stone, so RG wasn’t interested.

Speculation was Billy Donovan. Don’t remember any other names really.

Did the alleged candidate supposedly have land in the Mahomet area?
All I know is we should have hired Thad who wanted it BAD.

We probably had more of a shot at Thad than Billy.

While this is pretty undeniably true, as reality played out, but what could have been if Eric Gordon ended up in Champaign? The kid averaged 20.9 ppg in his 1 year in college. If the rumor was true and Derrick Rose would have played with Gordon, then Weber's worst season could have been much different.

You could even say, what if Gordon had just been upfront with us and we landed E'Twaun Moore instead, things would have been very different.

I think that class of '07 really killed Weber. Why he wanted Billy Cole over Robbie Hummel was a bit strange. Losing Evan Turner when we already got Demetri McCamey. Though that one may tie directly to not taking Matta.

If you ranked the players that we had strong chances of landing in that class they might rank:

Gordon
Rose
Turner
Hummel
Moore
McCamey
Cole

Regardless how you want to rank them, our guys were definitely the bottom 2. Getting the bottom 2 on that list really killed any momentum from the title game, and the class of '08 was worse. I actually really liked McCamey and he made an All Big Ten team 3 of 4 seasons with 1 1st team. But those guys above McCamey combined for 8 1st team All Big Tens, 5 AA teams (7 if you include honorable mention), and 1 national player of the year. The way things worked out was just a killer.

Got stuck going into work at 4 a.m. and listened to the SCORE, which I believe has CBS Sports overnight. The CBS guy was saying 19 years is enough, they will never win with Painter and should move on.
Doesn’t feel like it’s been that long. He always seems stuck perpetually building the team but never has all the parts. Last year might have been his best unit or perhaps when Hummel was there. But, I think we’ve seen his ceiling. Wouldn’t be shocked if the fans were restless. That said, he seems like a good dude

He's had some very good teams and I believed last years team was better than this years and plenty good enough to reach the Final 4.

If Collins has this season 2 years ago I think he gets Duke job.

You would have had to erase the past five seasons of his track record. If he would have followed up the 16-17 season (first tourney win) with this season, where he would have three, 20-win seasons, then he's probably considered.

Question for Collins is whether he wants to sign an extension with Northwestern (incoming) or if he's going to explore another opportunity. Audige, Bouie, & Beran are seniors but have their COVID year option available (I'm assuming NW isn't going to push them out). If all three come back, they should at least have a tourney contender again. If you can bring in one good transfer to supplement that group, they might be a conference title contender (!). The other side of the coin is Collins could strike now while he is a external job candidate and seek out another opportunity. Go to a place like Notre Dame (just an example) where he'll have more resources, more recruiting freedom, better departmental support, etc. and get a five year extension with a pay bump.

I think Billy has feelers out in some places. Worse coaches to have reaching out to you.

Only one college coach making more than him right now (Calipari), plus Billy D. isn't missing the constant recruiting. Someone would have to pay him >$8 million/year and deal with the uncomfortable feeling that your new hire might not be spending every waking minute thinking about recruiting.

Now is actually a good time for Collins to leave. His stock may be higher next year, but Northwestern has been a team that loses players not adds them. If Buie or Audige leave next year will be worse, also will there be better jobs available next year? To me if I'm Collins and I can get Notre Dame or Georgetown, I'm gone.

On the other side of the coin, the natural selection for Northwestern would be Mitch Henderson. His stock will never be higher, he's from Indiana, knows the challenges of recruiting to high academic schools, and has spent a decade as an assistant at Northwestern. Timing seems right for all involved.

Rodney Terry very well could get the Texas job full-time

Coach Terry won that game for the Longhorns yesterday. Even more so than the guys on the floor.

The guys on the floor were staggering. They had lost their lead and the game was quickly slipping away. Penn State had a 10-0 run going and took a 58-55 and all the momentum.

And then Coach called time out. And everything quickly changed coming out of the time-out. Texas then grabbed a hold of the game by the neck and never let go.

So not only did Coach Terry change the fortunes of his ball club... he changed his own coaching future. One way or the other.

And with the Longhorns advancing like this... more folks down that way might be paying less attention to the ball with the funny shape.

I also think Collins leaving seems like ideal timing, just not sure there's a great destination for him. Georgetown is targeting better candidates. Places like Texas Tech seem like a bad spot for him AND a disappointing hire for the school. Notre Dame is the logical spot, would their fanbase feel underwhelmed with hiring Collins?

If they can keep the band together and add a shooter, it makes plenty of sense for him to give it one more year and make it known early you are looking to leave. A mid-tier ACC program would make a lot of sense. Maybe he could do the sacrilegious move and try to find a different job in the Big Ten, such as Wisconsin if they move on from Gard next year.

I wonder who St John will go for. Mike Anderson was very successful at Arkansas and Missouri. Pitino would be a disaster.

Lon Kruger might be the most underrated coach in CBB modern history but Mike Anderson is also on that list. Guy played a fun style, constant pressure, ahead of his time on emphasizing 3's, and athletic big men. He was a head coach for 21 seasons and never had a losing season record, and spent almost his entire career at places not known for basketball success. He won a Big XII title and made an Elite Eight appearance at Mizzou, took UAB to the S16, and won a couple tourney games at Arkansas.

There's no way that Buie has any more college eligibility.....is there? The guy has to be close to obtaining his AARP card.
