Conference Realignment

thanks for the post. Sort of what you would expect the ACC official comment to be.

As a conference both the ACC & PAC12 will want to find any way they can to increase revenues and keep their conferences together, while every individual school will be working hard to find a better landing place. Pretty evident by ACC schools investigating GOR outs & rumors that CO/AZ will head to Big12. The problem is that most of these schools don't have a better option & will fight had to keep anyone else from defecting. As long as the GOR stands, I don't think the ACC has any better options. I don't see any PAC12 schools wanting a piece of the ACC GOR...so this most likely looks a lot like the former B1G/ACC/PAC12 partnership that ended with USC/UCLA to the B1G

An interesting read on AAU membership:
>>Nany Cantor, then-chancellor of Syracuse, is quoted in the New York Times as saying that, after going through the AAU review process, "it was very clear from AAU’s point of view, and our point of view, that they had recommitted to this narrow set of criteria."<<

They misspelled her name (may be missing an n), but interesting to see that Syracuse's departure from the AAU was on her watch...

yea

why would any team sign that now ?
It says it won't happen until after media contract is signed; but with $ gap talked about I could still see some interest among the bottom 1/2 of the conference that knows they can't find a better home; but top half of conference that thinks they may even have a chance at another option...no way would/should they touch a long term deal like ACC.

Looks like more posturing to look stronger than they are

PAC-12 has been trying to get the TV deal done for 11+ months. I think Colorado, Arizona and perhaps Arizona State are done waiting!

It's all but official, this is the last year for divisions.
Which I will hate. Given that the West is weak compared to the East, the West entrant in the champ game would at least have a puncher's chance of winning. Look at us last year and possibly this year (obviously need stronger offense). Real strong defense can win games. With no divisions, what is our realistic goal (and that of most other teams)? B1G champ will almost certainly be anOSU, Mich, PSU, USC.

Have to hope for national championship series to extend to 12 teams to have any expectations of getting there.

The guy is almost 70. I'm not saying the writing isn't on the wall regarding ND joining a conference but didn't they just sign a pretty decent TV deal?

Up again in 2025. I think ND still tries to maintain their independence as long as they get equivalent money to the top teams.

Jack Swarbrick doesn't want to be the AD to take away ND independence. He no longer has to be. Welcome to the B1G, Notre Dame.
Bevaqua ? reminds me of this rant by Tommy LaSorda

In a game against the Padres on June 30, 1982, Dodgers reliever Tom Niedenfuer hit Joe Lefebvre in the head after allowing a home run. Kurt Bevacqua of the Padres charged the mound and later said Lasorda should’ve been fined, calling him “that fat little Italian.”

Lasorda responded the next day.

“I’ll tell you what I think about it. I think that is very, very bad for that man to make an accusation like that. That is terrible,” he started. “I have never, ever, since I managed, ever told a pitcher to throw at anybody, nor will I ever. And if I ever did, I certainly wouldn’t make him throw at a f–king .130 hitter like Lefebvre or f–king Bevacqua, who couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a f–king boat.

“And I guaran-f–king-tee you this: When I pitched and I was going to pitch against a team that had guys on it like Bevacqua, I sent a f–king limousine to get the c–ksucker to make sure he was in the motherf–king lineup because I kicked that c–ksucker’s !!! any day of the week. He’s a f–king motherf–king big mouth, I’ll tell you that.”

I think the decision to join the B1G has been made for ND by TV , specifically NBC .
Its inevitable at this point.
Everyone knows it.
ND just wont admit it yet.

It may come at end of GOR (basketball/other than football) & end of current ND TV contract, but my understanding from Covid year numbers is ND is underpaid by NBC when compared to B1G numbers. Don't see NBC being in any hurry to get ND to the B1G and have to pay B1G $ over current favorable contract for NBC, lose sole rights to ND vs. shared rights in B1G. I suspect NBC is quite happy with things the way they are.

It will be interesting to see how much NBC is willing to pay in next ND contract, but I don't see why NBC wouldn't still rather have ND to themselves even if they can work around the GOR & ND commitment to join ACC if they join a conference.

the Pres of Arizona says he hasnt even seen the numbers

is it like one of those deals where "We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it." quoting Pelosi here
Sure, they won't sign without eyes wide open for what they're getting into.

But the TV deal will be contingent on the schools being bound to stay together and actually provide the inventory for the life of the deal so the TV partner isn't left holding the bag when it explodes.

A time for choosing. Quoting Reagan ;)

I predict half the schools wont sign for any deal longer than 24 months

If you told if you told me that the Big Ten had to go to 24 teams and to pick the teams I’d add, it would be: Notre Dame, Oregon, Washington, Arizona State, Florida State, Miami, UNC, and Georgia Tech. If I could also kick out Maryland and Rutgers I’d also add Mizzou and Colorado.
Personally, I think losing the Braggin’ Rights setup would be a TRAGEDY. If Mizzou ever joined the Big Ten, I’d want it in writing that we only play once per year (an anti-protected rivalry?? Lol), and that event is not affected. It’s such a special atmosphere.
