Kat these are great comments on controlling energy, not matching, etc....really good takeaways we can all use

On a lighter note....and to expand on your comments...
I believe Most of illinois Loyalty members (like your students) ""are processing Trama and don't realize it" LOL
The tongue in cheek comment is that we absolutely know we're processing, otherwise I don't have another way to categorize what we're doing here 😂

The serious one is that everyone has different levels of trauma and processes it differently (and this is why therapy is so, so beneficial, even if you don't have what you'd consider to be trauma in your life)

To add to your therapy point, it’s a wonderful way to learn how to cope when you do experience a traumatic event if you don’t need anything addressed at that moment. This is a bit different but my wife and I made an agreement when we got engaged we would see a couples therapist so we had the tools to address any issues if they came up down the road. It has worked wonders at keeping our communication open and honest.

Can someone point me to the advanced stats that show a player's impact per 40 minutes? I have a coworker that wants to argue Dain is one of our most important players. I remember seeing that when Dain is on the floor we are terrible per 40 but I can't find it now.

The individual advanced stats like per 40 and per 100 possessions, WS, and BPM support your friend's argument. Dain is one of our best players by those metrics despite being one of the worst defensively. You can find those stats on SportsReference.

But I think there are advanced stats that show as a team, we play worse with Dain in the lineup. I see those numbers posted on here sometimes via X, but not sure of a good free source for those numbers.

That is what I was looking for. The team numbers for when Dain was on the floor and it showed we were BY FAR a worse team with him on the floor.

I've been working on this exactly over the past week- just need to make the graphs. Long and the short of it, Dain has been our #2 player behind TSJ thus far this season when it comes to combined offensive and defensive efficiency metrics per 40, but it also needs to be taken with a giant grain of salt. The majority of the minutes he's played this season has been against very low level competition and he has very good numbers in those games. Against higher level competition, he's struggled but he's also had limited minutes. So Dain's a case where the overall numbers look good, but it's not a good indicator of how he's performing against major competition because it doesn't account for the splits.

The best way I can compare it is imagine you have a .320 hitter. That's pretty phenomenal and you'd want him out there every game. But when you look at the splits, he only hits .072 against lefties. As such, you don't play him much against lefties.

That is what I was looking for. The team numbers for when Dain was on the floor and it showed we were BY FAR a worse team with him on the floor.

After adjusting for some 3 point variance and team strength, Illinois has been about 11 points per 100 possessions worse with Dain on the court compared to off the court. They have actually been better defensively with him on the court this year as well as last year. I want to point out that these numbers are still pretty noisy and can still move pretty drastically in a short amount of time.

For all of the superstitious among you, here is our record by jersey this year. :ROFLMAO:

Regular White: 6-0
Script Throwbacks: 3-1
Regular Navy: 1-0 ... why did we wear a navy jersey at home?
Regular Orange: 1-1
Flyin' Illini Throwbacks: 1-2

Of course, the problem with anyone trying to act like certain jerseys are "good luck" is that we have tended to wear our regular ones in games vs. easier opponents, so it is not apples to oranges.

We could go 1-20 in the Flyin' Illini throwbacks and I'm not sure I would beg for their disappearance like I have with the blue jerseys. Best jerseys in CBB.

I am so ridiculously in favor of white-orange-blue combos of both the Flyin' Illini and Script throwbacks. Without meaning to offend anyone (including the players or staff), I question the vision of someone who genuinely ever wants to wear our regular jerseys, lol ... I HAVE to believe we under contract from Nike to wear them every couple games. :ROFLMAO:

More random college basketball statistics for those interested. Sports Media Watch is tracking sports TV ratings quite well this year, and given how much this is driving conference expansion, I have enjoyed keeping track. So, I wanted to post below the Big Ten basketball games so far that have had at least 500k viewers. Two notes/observations to keep in mind:

1. While postseason college hoops draw huge audiences (e.g., our BTT title game vs. OSU in 2021 topped out over 6 million viewers, and NCAAT games draw audiences comparable with college football), regular season ratings - especially while football is still on - are quite a bit lower. In general, I think a rating above 500k is quite good, and anything over 1 million is a pretty big audience.

2. As with football, the channel determines quite a lot. You just simply are not going to get the rating on BTN or FS1 that you are on CBS or FOX. On this note, the absence of ESPN for any Big Ten basketball games this year seems to be hurting the exposure for conference teams more on the hoops side of things than it has for football.

2023-24 Big Ten Games With 500,000 or More Viewers
5.18 million for #21 Michigan State vs. #3 Arizona (FOX)
1.59 million for #4 Marquette vs. #2 Purdue (ESPN)
1.51 million for #9 Duke vs. #18 Michigan State (ESPN)
1.46 million for #20 Illinois at #17 Tennessee (CBS)
1.46 million for #2 Kansas at Indiana (CBS)
1.39 million for #7 Tennessee vs. #2 Purdue (ESPN)
1.21 million for Ohio State vs. UCLA (CBS)
1.06 million for Alabama vs. #4 Purdue (FOX)
904k for #9 Illinois at #1 Purdue (FS1)
870k for Michigan vs. Florida (ESPN)
768k for #11 FAU vs. #20 Illinois (ESPN)
755k for West Virginia vs. Ohio State (FOX)
697k for #3 Marquette at Wisconsin (FOX)
690k for Ohio State at Indiana (FOX)
681k for #23 Wisconsin at #1 Arizona (ESPN)
623k for #11 Gonzaga vs. #2 Purdue (ESPN2)
616k for #6 Baylor vs. Michigan State (FOX)
571k for Michigan State at #10 Illinois (FS1)
514k for Maryland at #10 Illinois (BTN)

500k for Indiana vs. #5 UConn (ESPN)

Zero games with more than 500k viewers for Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State and Rutgers. Two positive spins for the Illini:

1. VERY impressive for a Tennessee/Illinois game to (barely) outdraw a Kansas/Indiana game in the exact same CBS time slot a week apart. IU is truly a legend only in their own fans' minds, and ZERO Illini fans should help indulge the stale idea that IU has any sort of "brand" that exceeds Illinois or any other Big Ten program.

2. Only 3 games on BTN or FS1 have drawn over 500k viewers, and the Illini have played in all three. The nearly 1 million viewers for Illini/Purdue on FS1 of all channels is especially impressive.

VERY incomplete data, but this is the average number of viewers per Big Ten team so far, excluding unavailable data for channels like Peacock or B1G+.

Michigan State: 730k (359k without the massive rating vs. Arizona, FWIW)
Purdue: 583k
Illinois: 524k
Ohio State: 387k
Indiana: 382k
Wisconsin: 311k
Michigan: 305k
Nebraska: 278k
Iowa: 275k
Rutgers: 216k
Northwestern: 214k
Penn State: 209k
Maryland: 207k
Minnesota: 188k

Alright, who all on this board you putting in the starting 5?:

I'm nominating:

@pruman91 for his mind-altered perspective and having the best cheer squad with the Neighbor Ladies;
@sacraig as chief satirist
@altgeld88 for his intelligent, rational, and well-reasoned inputs (how the hell have you survived on Loyalty this long?)
@skyIdub as chief gif officer
@illini0440 because he's Tyler, and can likely carry the entire team on his back if ever had to actually step on a basketball court

Vincerò, Vincerò, VINCERÒ!
