I thought this was interesting. What do you reckon it's about? What was Altmyer doing that was 'off brand'? (From Jeremy Werner's article):

"The process of adjusting to a new staff and new team hasn’t been completely smooth though {for Altmyer}. Both Bret Bielema and Barry Lunney Jr. have mentioned Altmyer has had to adjust to their “brand of play” and how they do things differently than Ole Miss.

We have a different way of doing things...

You work in a program for a few years, you get indoctrinated to a certain way of belief, of culture, the way you treat people, the way you play the game, the way your offensive mentality is...

All those nuances. It’s just understanding, ‘Hey, here’s how we play.’ The style of play is going to be a curve for him as far as the conference..."

Ole miss and Illinois run a very similar yet very different offense. Ball control and game management here….fast pace, shot plays galore from Kiffin. While a lot of the concepts schematically might be the same or very similar…the tempo is not.

Are kick returnees more likely to get hurt than punt returnees? I would have thought the opposite.

Muffed punts are game changers. Can't take that role lightly.
"kick coverage" not kick returnee.

Unless I'm reading your comment wrong, I think you misunderstood his comment.

I trust Barry Lunney until proven otherwise. He strikes me as a compliment sandwich type of coach and let's be real. If Tony Petersen was still our OC in 2022 we don't win 8 games, period.

I wouldn't read into the "adjustment" comments too much. Just because modern offenses look very similar formation wise, the strategy can vary greatly and the terminology is like learning a new language. We give NFL QB's about 3 years to prove themselves, college QB's have less than that, no guaranteed salary, and way less reps to get it right.

auto correct turned returner to returnee. sorry.

It was about IW returning punts. I just think that it's more prone to injury than any other special teams job. It's also most critical. Sure hands and balls of steel. You're looking up at a floating ball with 10 guys bearing down on you once you catch it. Lots of guys who didn't take the fair catch when they should have and paid a price.

Anyway, I'm glad we're putting a top quality guy there to field the punts. Whoever it is, hope we have the right plan to help them make the right choice.

FWIW, I like Lunney. I think he's a good OC, with a very good track record and high ceiling. That said, last season was so-so. So putting him in the Top 5 is pretty aspirational. Hopefully, the O makes serious strides this season.

#1 has plenty of question marks, plus #3 and #4 were just fired at their previous jobs ("parted ways"). This list is pure clickbait.

We jumped 20 spots with a QB that did not even know we would be changing offensive coordinators. Lunney is the one I actually thing should be on this list... if we have solid production and move up this year after losing a vet QB and Chase, Lunney absolutely deserves to be in the conversation as a rising OC.

Another slow day at work for me (thankfully! finally!), so here are the all-time series records for the opponents we have on this year's schedule

Toledo: 0-0 (first meeting)
Kansas: 3-2 (0-1 in Lawrence, KS)
Penn State: 6-20 (4-9 in Champaign)
Florida Atlantic: 0-0 (first meeting)
Purdue: 45-47-6 (23-23-4 in West Lafayette, IN)
Nebraska: 6-13-1 (3-4-1 in Champaign)
Maryland: 0-2 (0-1 in College Park, MD)
Wisconsin: 39-44-7 (22-19-3 in Champaign)
Minnesota: 32-40-3 (13-23-2 in Minneapolis, MN)
Indiana: 44-25-3 (29-10-1 in Champaign)
Iowa: 38-38-2  (18-20-2 in Iowa City, IA)
Northwestern: 57-54-5 (27-23-2 in Champaign)

Let's take the lead in that Iowa series, PLEASE! Also, doing the math we led the all-time series vs. Iowa 37-23-2 in 2002 before losing 13 of 14. o_O

I am shocked by that Iowa record, especially that we're only 2 games under .500 in Iowa City! Being an '01 Illinois enrollee, I have a difficult time imagining a universe where not only could we not get dismantled every time we play them, but also have the upper hand :-o. Iowa and Paterno's PSU are the 2 matchups I didn't need more than a second to see an automatic loss (and hell, against PSU, that's normally the amount of actual game time it took as well... At least Joe would pull their starters at half so they wouldn't put up triple digits against us.). And here we are, in 2 years of Bielema, already having beaten both of them, with me having daydreams of going on a winning streak against each. What a change...

Full disclosure. I follow Illinois basketball way closer than the football team. I know they lost quite a bit from last year but realistically, what should we expect for a win total this year? 8 or 9. is 10 possible?

According to the pregame thread, if we beat Toledo-that officially means we have their number lol

I honestly think 10 is possible. A lot would have to go right for that to happen especially regarding our qb play, our center to qb exchange and assignment recognition, and our db and lb play within the first 10-15 yards of the line of scrimmage. Our defensive line should be Top 10 in the country if not better. They're that good and have that much talent in multiple positions. And our run blocking on offense should be very good as well, plus a healthy McCray should give us better red zone production.

So long and the short of it is, if both Altmyer and Kreutz play well, if we can stay healthy, and if Leonhard's consulting and ability to disguise coverage allows our LBs to thrive like his history suggests, I see 10 wins and a trip to the B10 Championship as achievable. It's a lot of iffs, but it's doable. Low end, there is no reason we shouldn't get less than 6 wins with our schedule, barring injuries of course.
