Bulls are scary good. I'm pumped for this year, but also next when the pieces settle and Ayo has year one under his best. The future is bright for Bulls fans.

Noticed Ayo had a -17 +/- against Washington. I know +/- for a single game often doesn’t tell the whole story, but kind of remarkable given Bulls won and next worse on Bulls was -4. Ayo’s +/- was the worst of the game with Gafford of WIzards being only other player (-12) in double figures

I don't follow the NBA, what does this mean?

If you go to the play by play it says when guys get subbed so you can follow what happened. Deficit went from 3 to 9 between 1st and early 2nd Q (-6) then another run from down 4 to down 12 through half for a -8 totaling -14 in the half.

I googled it and there are several versions. The Bulls biggest deficit was 13, in the second quarter. So how do they get -17? Go figure.
It is the point differential while that player is on court. It means that while Ayo was on the court the Wizards scored -17 more points than the Bulls did during those same stretches of time.

+/- is a decent stat to indicate performance of a player over the long term. But there are so many factors that can influence +/- that are completely independent of the player's performance that looking too far into the +/- over a 1 game sample size isn't worthwhile. And I've said the same thing after Ayo's had good +/- games

And that is what I said in my original post. I didn’t see the game, so can’t really comment on how he played. I just thought it was interesting that given that the Bulls won and the second lowest +/- on the team was -4, that Ayo had a -17. I don’t regularly check +/- for players, but don’t recall seeing anything like that before. Maybe not as uncommon as I think it is.

Yesterday's game was one of the most difficult to watch as an Ayo fan. Bulls have been unselfish and good passers, but basically was Derozan, Lavine or Vucovich taking the shots. Those 3 were not looking to pass, except to Vucovich, which is the NBA. Give it to your money players, as all 3 were money in the 4th Qtr. But Ayo was open, and it was frustrating to see Demar take very difficult shots when Ayo (who shoots at a very high percentage) was open.

Ayo also struggled against Kuzma when he switched. Kuzma is just as athletic, if not more and has 3 inches on him. Ayo was also on the court with Thomas, who is there to shoot open 3's but stuggles against NBA size/athleticism. Ayo seemed like he needed another athlete out there with him.

Bright spot was in the 3rd Qtr, Ayo stymied Beal, he was able to "man him up"and forced Beal into some difficult shots/passes. After that Ayo saw the floor more often was left to guard Beal. Although Ayo's stats don't scream at you, he was on the floor for the last minutes of the Pacers and Wizards game. That tells you that there is faith in him, and pretty cool considering Bulls are the top of the East. Ayo will lose minutes with Ball and Caruso return, but Thomas will probably go to zero minutes and Ayo will likely go to 15-20. Thomas has been getting 20+ minutes lately, I see those minutes going away before Ayo's.

The difference is viewpoint, you are looking at the geometric difference and the other poster is giving you the arithemetric difference. Geometric is basically point a and point b. Atrithemetric accounts for deviations you took to get to point a and point b. For example the distance from your house to the grocery store is 2 miles (geometric differnce), but if you stop at the bank first it may be 3 miles (arithemetric).

Thanks to all for the details on this metric. It seems odd that his was so bad and no one else was close given that subs are usually done in pairs or triplets. So Ayo was usually coming and going out alone, meaning he had very specific roles. Makes sense.

I know it sucks cause we’re biased and love Ayo, but your best players take most of the shots in every level of basketball, especially late when you need buckets.

It’s why Ayo did that for us here.
