Part of problem is Bostic and Hobbes while good rebounders have average post moves due to lack of athleticism.

They are good on the offensive boards but still slow at times on the defensive boards. Hobby/Shoup-Hill/Bostic foot speed and checking out every play are not consistent.

Dolan showed last game she is very effective driving to the hoop 5 for 7 but our guards rarely pass her the ball. Mckenzie also has some nice medium game moves. JMO but our guards are shoot first. Unless they grow 6" taller they are always going to be limited driving the lane.

Part of it comes with game speed and experience. Dolan was also passive at times in the beginning. The game is slowing down for her and it shows the more time she gets on the court. Her game thrives being the first one off the bench and not playing only 5 minutes a game.

Our guards are shoot first and the playmakers. As much as the guards shoot too much the rest of the ladies stand around a bunch as well. Like you mentioned, Hobby and Bostic are limited on post moves. Bryant is the most consistent of the bunch but we aren't a good outside shooting team. If you don't have a consistent outside shooting game or inside post game than it is hard to run offense. JMO but am fine with Cook/Dolan/Bryant trying to create plays to setup easier shots for everyone. It does bring about turnovers, missed shots, etc but kind of the route we have to go until more playmakers get on the team.

She hasn't seen the court at all the last 2 games. Zero minutes vs Penn State .. Zero minutes vs Indiana.
I am aware

If Shoup-Hill is on the court than Bostic should not inbounds the ball. Hobby is too slow to do it. In the paragraph I wrote I thought McKenzie should do it. I mentioned Shoup-Hill as another option when she is in the game.

Illini pass east west and hunt ball screens. Part of problem is Bostic and Hobbes while good rebounders have average post moves due to lack of athleticism.

Other B10 teams pass east west trying to feed the post, looking for cutters and hunt the wide open 3 point shooter. Iowa is ridiculously good at this when Caitlin is not playing Stephan Curry going 1 on 5 and launching 25 footers.

I think you are spot on, the major problem is not Cook’s and Bryant’s size but the fact that they shoot first and pass second guards and seem to be in a content of who can dribble more. Right now this team does not have a “true point guard”. If both of them shot less, especially the desperation drives, and passed more they have some opportunistic scorers in McKenzie, Bostic, and Dolan.

Your first post and your observation is that Cook and Bryant "seem to be in a contest of who can dribble more." Really?

I agree with this

You can play and win with smaller guards at the collegiate game. Problem is when you have two guards who are both 5'6 and neither have a complete or consistent game. Green definitely places a ton of trust in Cook and Bryant. Glad she is getting Dolan 20-25 minutes lately and hopefully it keeps climbing into next season.

For real casual fans who don't watch much basketball outside of Illinois, McKenna Hofschild is a fun PG to watch at 5'2. Probably closer to 5'0 without shoes on but she can ball and a lefty. Plays in the Mountain West but she would be a top 3 Big Ten PG. Have seen her live 3 times between high school/college and is a playmaker.

Hope we can land Destiny Jackson or Aubrey Galvan in '25. Unfortunately, that won't help this or next year's team.

That would be great, but let’s not forget about the transfer portal for next year, which will open shortly. I would be surprised if we don’t lose some players to the portal. I would like to see Cori Allen get a look as from what I have seen of her in limited action is that she is a “pass first” guard, takes good shots has size, and is listed at 5’10”. Very small sample size against lesser competition but is hard to ignore, especially when the wheels have fallen in some recent games.

Shauna is in tough "win now" position to try and make the NCAA tourney vs. try and develop her younger players.

We really need to get more size thru transfer portal for next season. We don't have 5 star freshman post players coming in.

Two seasons of conference play so far under Green

18
-15 with 3 games left
Eight seasons of conference play before Green
18
-118
We were the worst team in the B10 for the past 8 seasons. Shauna has us 9 out of 14 this season so it is progress.

However we are still behind last season and were hoping for improvement with 1 years experience, portal transfers and 2 well rated freshmen.

I am hopeful we can finish above .500 in conference play and parley a BTT run into a NCAA bid but it will take a minor miracle.

It just hurts to watch us play such bad defense and offense against the upper tier big10 teams. I think we could do better if team ran screens, passed the ball better, and worked for the open shot. Its one thing to lose because lack of talent and another to lose due to lack of effort discipline and team play.

Last year had 3 Quad 1/2 wins

This team has 3 Quad 1/2 wins

Last 3 games left on schedule are Quad 1/2

I will say if we even make the WNIT (going from 64 to 48 teams) or WBIT (1st year, 32 teams), Green will be the only head coach in Illinois Women's Basketball history to make a tournament in first 2 seasons coaching here. I want to see the ladies do their best and after that I want it to continue.

Indiana just destroyed Iowa: 86-69
Indiana got whooped by 20 from the Illini on Monday, and then take out their frustration on Iowa. The Hawkeyes get destroyed by 17 from the Hoosiers on Thursday and then take out their frustration on ...... never mind :(

Loss by Iowa likely took them out of race for regular season conference title. Iowa is suspect on D and explosive on O. Iowa was cold from deep and Indiana hot.

One of the few games Clark and rest of team were cold. Funny when you think Clark still scored 24 pts, 10 rebounds and 9 assists.

Clark from 3

1st half 3-9
2nd half 0-7

Rest of team from 3

1st half 0-5
2nd half 2-7

Clark was 3-16 from 3. Her season 3 pt is 41% so if she had an average game she would have hit 4 more 3 pointers for 12 points. Iowa would still have lost 86-81. Indiana shot 52% vs Iowa 39%. Indiana outrebounded Iowa by 9. That was the difference, Clark would have made it closer but Iowa still loses.

Dolan looked very good. She has a nice shot and can score in the paint as well.

I wish our guards would try harder to find an open shooter or cutter insteading of putting their head down and driving to the hoop on most possesions.

JMO but our guards are ball dominant shoot first. We need a PG to run the offense. It would also be nice to see Shauna to call more plays.
You could copy and paste this to the men’s board, and it would fit. It’s incredible how fluid both teams are when making the extra pass.

I like how the Men's team makes the extra pass. Problem is when they pass up open 3 pointers and don't get a better shot. I have not seen woman's team make the extra pass. Problem is they often don't make the first couple passes. Our guards too often just go one on five instead of trying to pass the all around to find an open shot for one of the other players (or even themselves).
