Illinois 68, Michigan 53 Postgame

Couldn’t disagree more Williams seem to always make a play at the end of a game. He makes a three or makes a defensive play. He brings intensity every night. I hope Podz and Goode learn from him
I do agree with many of these posts, however, I need to chime in on the DaMonte conversation.

I like the aggressiveness he has shown this year in going to the hoop. However, it doesn't appear that he has the instinct to produce points when he attempts to take it to the rim. He seems to me to be more of a flinger; he gets in range, but can't finish. I think it's important to the team that he is able to excel at this aspect, however, for some reason, he isn't excelling.

Not to say he should stop driving and pulling the defense off the arch, but he should limit it to one or two times a game, just to keep the defense honest.

His best use is to take the 3pt shot.

Coach is going to play DaMonte. DaMonte's a man. Coach likes his toughness, and his leadership.
(Note: I don't know Coach or anyone who does. These are just my observations.) Yet he got twenty minutes in the UM game. This is less than his average, so maybe we are trending in a different direction. We'll see. I think he'll get more minutes against PU. We'll probably need him on D.

Coach is a "win now" coach. I think he's playing what he thinks is giving him the best chance.

Not disputing the general idea that you draw more fouls by driving to the rim but it's funny that the first points of the game were because he got fouled on a midrange junper.
Agree with you on that instance. I‘m not saying there isn’t a situation where you don’t pull up on a drive, but if the lane is free, you go all in.

Well hell yes...and I guarantee it will be different in Ann Arbor....but that is almost a 100% probability. They may even win...we will see. But whatever happens, last year's outcome in Ann Arbor and the decision to duck the rematch in Champaign, define "Michigan men"....and there is not a thing admirable about that definition....and it will never change.
I don't know.

I'm still weeping that Nick didn't get that rebound and Higgins did.

It's one of the many things I'm sure that will cause me to turn in my grave for many days.

Coward is one of those types that, even in seeming to give someone a compliment, inevitably ends up talking about / stroking himself. There’s terms for that/him, but this is (somewhat) a family site so I’ll refrain from using them.
Awww, you think of us as family 😊

There was no scheduled “rematch in Champaign” last year… only the game in Ann Arbor was on the schedule. Michigan did indeed duck out on three games, but a mythical game at Illinois was not one of them.

All coaches are "win now" coaches. This notion that BU is going to play a kid to help him develop is ridiculous. Sure in a game against SW Montana State where you have an insurmountable lead, he'll put guys in that aren't in the regular rotation. But in a conference game that's somewhat close, he's not going to risk it. Podz, Goode, and Melendez's minutes in these games are generally to give the starter's a quick breather and nothing more. He's not putting them in there to "see what they can do" as so many fans want.

Acknowledged. I don't disagree El.

I remember when Gill, Bardo and Larry Smith were Freshman. As set-in-his-ways that Coach Henson was, he always gave them opportunities. And one of the great things I remember most about these great Illini from the past, I remember that they never hurt us while getting more than trash-time minutes...

I think this trio has what it takes to succeed at this level now. Even as Freshmen. But I'll continue to trust Coach U, and hope the main players have what we need through to the end. Whatever it takes!

Bruce Douglas graduated. we had no point on the roster so Bardo and Smith had to step immediately.

Gill was raw as a freshman but he oozed so much talent that he was a joy to watch.

He was a fantastic defender right from the start. Easily better than the older guys in front of him. For most coaches, that will get you on the court.

I like our three FR, but I don't think any of them show Gill's potential (hope I'm wrong).

I don't see lottery pick in any of these guys either.

Gill as a freshman wasn't better than fifth year altenberger. Maybe not even better than tony wysinger. But definitely good from the start. Except for that bonehead play against Purdue

I didn't say he was better. I said he was a better defender -- way better than either Altenberger or Wysinger. And that's what will get you on the court for most coaches. If we had a FR guard right now that was a Gill-level defender, BU would absolutely give him playing time. We desperately need more guard depth right now.

We have great short lineup primarily (7 guys with Omar and Hawk subs) and that is good/successful/conservative approach so far this year.

On flip side...I believe we will need depth for tourney and the player development depends on tick...we see minor tick for Goode, would like to see a little more for him, Melendez and Podz.

I strongly disagree. I think Gill was way better defensively. Altenberger, after his knee injury, was a liability defensively. Quick perimeter players gave him fits.
Not taking sides...and know steals doesn't tell the whole defense story, but....in 86/87 (according to sports ref data)...

-Alt had 33 min/game and 41 steals for the year.
-Gill had 11 min/game and had 39 steals for the year.
