Illinois 76, Nebraska 50 Postgame

Sincere, Ty, Epps and Dain continue to impress in how they are finding ways to impact winning even when their personal stats aren't great. Harris and Rodgers are pure energy and sacrifice guys, Jayden is confidence and a bucket, and Dain has been a revelation all season long. I thought he played great all night, especially on defense, and was really surprised at the stat line after. Those guys just seem to be getting it about as early as you could possibly expect.

Yep, 100% agree. Mayer has been an infuriating player for me to watch this year as it is clear how much talent he has, and yet it's even more abundantly clear how little a damn he gives with his effort on defense or willingness to play within the system on offense for large portions of games. Mayer is a player who if he showed the defensive effort he did in the 2nd half and the selflessness on offense for the first 10-15 minutes of that half he would be truly exceptional. But, he just doesn't. Well, unless it's effort that'll directly show up in the box score. I know players who play like that all too well. They might've had the most talent on the court/field and yet nobody liked playing with them and those teams they were on certainly didn't win all that many games.

When Matt decides he wants to give a full game's worth of effort he'll get a full game's worth of minutes, but until then, I have no problem cutting into his minutes to players who will give that effort the entire time they're in the game. And yes, I'm still saying this after Matt had his best game as a teammate as the only reason he can't do that for a full game is the thing between his ears that's holding him back.
Not only are we in the same school of thought, I believe we are in the same classroom.

Once or twice a game i wonder who CoHawk is passing to. :)

Dainja dominated Walker on defense but was more about passing on offense. Sencire was by far the most effective defensive choice vs Griesel. Frustrate their two best offensive options and they’re toast. Good game planning and coaching.

Our defense at the rim (primarily but not exclusively Dainja) is elite. :)

I haven't seen MSU this year, but it's usually a rock fight with them at the rim, so that might be fun. (I'm tying hard not to look ahead to Edey.)

Kind of came off like a jerk I thought. No credit to IL, just that his team "missed shots they've been making." Come on Fred. Get some Lovie vibes from him at NE. May just be me.

I didn't get that vibe. Did seem a bit shellshocked, but thought he gave credit to the Illini while lamenting his team's lack of execution. And complimented our defense (especially Dain's and the inside help without mentioning anyone by name). Love to see that.

"Give them credit. They took us out of it. They took our shooters away, and played Derrick [inside], and we just couldn't get anything going.... I feel good about Derrick whoever is guarding him, and we just couldn't get around them, we couldn't get over the top - they were staying down on his fakes. Give them credit."

LINCOLN, Neb. — Illinois backed up a home upset of Wisconsin with a 76-50 win over Nebraska on Tuesday at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln.

After starting out 0-3 in the Big Ten, Illinois has two-straight Big Ten wins. Terrence Shannon Jr. had a game-high 25 points with 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals. He got downhill early and used his athleticism to carry the Illini’s offense in an ugly first half. He followed up a 24-point outing against Wisconsin with another big outing.

Great job. How does a switch just flip like that? Seems to happen every year. Of course we have to keep that going and we will be tested next game. One thing though. Our 3 point shooting is not our strength, but we don’t seem to understand that. We shot 62.5% from 2 and 27.8 from 3. It seems pretty clear that we if we take a few less 3’s (29 last night) we might see positive results. Anyway, great effort last night!

Favored by 6.5 and it was a home upset lol

For your viewing pleasure, the box score

Epps 5 for 6. Yes!
Harris 0 for 6. Ouch
I'm always surprised by a stat I see in the boxscore. This morning, I was surprised to see that Harris had played half the game. He sat for such long stretches that it didn't feel like he really made an impact. I also felt like Dainja played a lot more than 16 minutes, but I guess that shows the impact he had while he was in.

Just watched on Tivo delay. Excellent game! Really fun and entertaining.

- Superb ball movement
- Excellent help defense
- Each of the top 8 guys played an integral role
- Cohesive unit; great teamwork

I like our depth & bench strength. And that's even without Goode and Skyy (maybe???).

Can someone please help CoHawk understand that every time he shoots a three from more than 5 ft beyond the arc, our chances of winning drop like 0.25% and so do his chances of being drafted? Oh, and the reason no one's guarding him way out there is because it's a terrible shot. Thanks in advance.

Both of those shots this game were with less than 5 seconds on the shot clock 🤷‍♂️

A great win last night that didn’t rely on 1 or 2 players being hot from deep. Good balance, great ball movement. We’re a much better team when we focus on getting in the lane, and we make more 3’s when they are inside out.

Great defense again. Great energy from start to finish.

A win against MSU may truly right the ship.

I was thinking to myself that I'd listen to Brian & Doug for the first half and then go to bed. Stayed up for the whole thing (natch.)

Two thoughts:

1. Winning in this manner is fun;

2. Reading the postgame thread after we win in this manner is fun. (the first thread post by @The Galloping Ghost particularly made me lol)

I plan on feeling this way again on Saturday morning. ;) :illinois::ah:

The one he put up from the Nebraska logo there was 10 seconds left on the shot clock. This is just a nitpick though. He played really well overall (as did all of the guys). Can't wait for Michigan State on Friday!

Re: Mayer Defense

My impression, is that he is a pretty terrible on-ball defender. Off the ball, he is pretty excellent. Especially help side shot contesting.
By all accounts he's been much better than anyone on this board seems to give him credit for. I would say he's top 3, behind probably Dain and Sencire. Basketball reference advanced stats backs that up too. He was also a very good defender at Baylor.
