To take him out to put in DGL or Nico isn't going to improve the team on the floor right now because of the impact on defense. If he can clean up his passing when under pressure, he will be fine. Really a response to many posts here:
- I don’t think people are knocking Ty, they’re knocking roster construction and/or the decision to have Ty play PG
- Yes, Ty and Marcus both had three turnovers, but putting Ty at point takes him away from what he does best (work under the hoop), allows defenses to sag off the PG (can’t shoot), and he can’t play PG at the end of a game (bad FT%)
- Why not have Marcus at PG, who is a better fit there, and let Ty be Ty.
- To the point above that we need Marcus as a shooter at the three, I would argue that Steph Curry as a PG has managed to make a couple 3’s (admittedly, Steph is just a tad better at getting his own shot with just a slightly quicker release)

Summary: I think our “best five” doing what they do best requires a position swap of Ty and Marcus.

For DGL especially in this case, thru his first 7 games, he has been getting beat badly on the defensive end where opponents were singling him out and taking it to him when he was on the court. And offensively, while he does have a high ceiling, he's more in the trying to "get his" phase than playing within the flow of the offense. Again, this is perfectly normal for a freshman, and that's why most freshman guards in the B10 just don't see much playing time unless you are either forced into it or their offense is just too good to bench. Thru 7 games, out of all the players on the team, DGL rated lowest for me in the time he played. So it makes sense to me that he didn't get time tonight. That said, if he continues to work hard on both sides of the floor and take advantage if the opportunities he can get, this can certainly change.

Good analysis. I'll also add that BU likely wanted to get Ty as many minutes as possible playing against Rutgers' press. The more he experiences that type of pressure, the more comfortable he will get.

Because it was usually after a L where he had plenty of reason to be lambasted. He had several bad calls last night as well, but an Illini Roadkill Victory has a tendency to help us forget the bad things that happened. (don't go fact check me 'cuz I have no idea if it's true or not)

First A game of the season for the guys. Their Game Score was a 99 (100 is the max), highest since last season's road demolition of Nebraska. Those kind of games have been too few and far between for this team the past two years (3 total before tonight since the 2021 1 seed).

Starting 5 of "Oops, all wings" really worked well all game, and the only time they struggled were when Coleman sat with 2 fouls.

Hansberry and Dainja were non factors in the game, which is a bit concerning, and the team could still stand to cut down on turnovers and increase their FT rate, but that was a rare fun and easy B1G road game.

Yea refs were a hot mess of inconsistency both ways like always it just didn't impact the game at all.

There was a great play in the highlights starting at 1:31. Ty is out there, but Shannon is running the point. Shannon drives right, Ty makes a great cut, pulls in the defense, then kicks out to Harmon for an open 3. To me, that's exactly what we want from him all the time. Ty being Ty and getting awesome results for us. For the time being, we should be running as much through Shannon and Domask at PG. It's not perfect, but I think that maximizes our strengths.

I don't know if Ty Rodgers is going to be a great facilitator (not really necessary with this much experience), but he will be a mismatch for any team with tradiional PGs. This team always has 4 players (sometimes all 5) on the court that are comfortable with the ball in their hands. There will be games where the matchups wotk against us, but the great majority of the time, ILL will have the mismatch advantages. I hope I can get used to the ball movement that uses the clock to get the best shot. They look like a team that has played together for a long time. I remember watching a team like this once before. It might have been around 2005.

Just noting for the PG critics that all Ty’s turnovers were the result of bad passes not ball handling. Typical TOs for a PG. not a recommendation for a PG but more passing probably converts to more TOs statistically. Also true for Ty’s TOs. Bad news is these live ball TOs are more likely to result in easy scores for the opponents. Somehow, however they don’t seem as bad as moving screens, charging fouls, etc. which are just mistakes rather than a risk/reward error. Team experience should reduce these.
