Serious roadkill, more like road annihilation
Serious roadkill, more like road annihilation
Really a response to many posts here:Ty had a rough few possessions to start the game but also made a few nice plays that led points. Still doesn't seem comfortable, but I think at worst he's a wash. He offers some strengths against smaller guards and has some weaknesses that can be exploited.
To take him out to put in DGL or Nico isn't going to improve the team on the floor right now because of the impact on defense. If he can clean up his passing when under pressure, he will be fine. He'd do better at the 4, but QG is doing great and we need Domask as a shooter at the 3. So might as well put our best 5 out there and make it work.
+1. That's why I couldn't stand Mayer and his hero ball. This is more of a team this year. Not only reliable 3pt shooters, but we’re shooting them in the flow of the offense due to unselfish play and shooters being in the right spots on the floor.
Good analysis. I'll also add that BU likely wanted to get Ty as many minutes as possible playing against Rutgers' press. The more he experiences that type of pressure, the more comfortable he will get.So here's my take on DGL- I think he certainly has offensive talent and can have a high ceiling on that side of the ball, but his defense and playing within the framework of the team both need a lot of work right now. And to be clear, this is something almost all freshmen in the B10 have historically struggled with. And as such, it gets hard to play them in a hostile road environment where possessions are at a premium
For DGL especially in this case, thru his first 7 games, he has been getting beat badly on the defensive end where opponents were singling him out and taking it to him when he was on the court. And offensively, while he does have a high ceiling, he's more in the trying to "get his" phase than playing within the flow of the offense. Again, this is perfectly normal for a freshman, and that's why most freshman guards in the B10 just don't see much playing time unless you are either forced into it or their offense is just too good to bench. Thru 7 games, out of all the players on the team, DGL rated lowest for me in the time he played. So it makes sense to me that he didn't get time tonight. That said, if he continues to work hard on both sides of the floor and take advantage if the opportunities he can get, this can certainly change.
Because it was usually after a L where he had plenty of reason to be lambasted. He had several bad calls last night as well, but an Illini Roadkill Victory has a tendency to help us forget the bad things that happened. (don't go fact check me 'cuz I have no idea if it's true or not)I can´t remember a ref DJ Baldhead game without any discussion of him in the postgame thread.
Really a response to many posts here:
- I don’t think people are knocking Ty, they’re knocking roster construction and/or the decision to have Ty play PG
- Yes, Ty and Marcus both had three turnovers, but putting Ty at point takes him away from what he does best (work under the hoop), allows defenses to sag off the PG (can’t shoot), and he can’t play PG at the end of a game (bad FT%)
- Why not have Marcus at PG, who is a better fit there, and let Ty be Ty.
- To the point above that we need Marcus as a shooter at the three, I would argue that Steph Curry as a PG has managed to make a couple 3’s (admittedly, Steph is just a tad better at getting his own shot with just a slightly quicker release)
Summary: I think our “best five” doing what they do best requires a position swap of Ty and Marcus.
So. Much. Ball. Movement.chef's kiss:
apologies if already posted. then again, I could watch this ALL DAY LONG
Well last year he didn't seem to.too bad Brad doesn't know what he's doing

The two charges he called in our favor in the second half really helped squash any remaining Rutgers hopes.I can´t remember a ref DJ Baldhead game without any discussion of him in the postgame thread.
There was a great play in the highlights starting at 1:31. Ty is out there, but Shannon is running the point. Shannon drives right, Ty makes a great cut, pulls in the defense, then kicks out to Harmon for an open 3. To me, that's exactly what we want from him all the time. Ty being Ty and getting awesome results for us. For the time being, we should be running as much through Shannon and Domask at PG. It's not perfect, but I think that maximizes our strengths.Really a response to many posts here:

This is going to be such a fun season to watch. This is such an unusual lineup. If you consider the 9 man rotation we saw yesterday, ILL has one 6'-4" player and 8 betwen 6'-6" and 6'10". 1 first year player, 1 second year player, 1 third year player, and 6 four+ year players, and most have very high BB IQ. I don't know if Ty Rodgers is going to be a great facilitator (not really necessary with this much experience), but he will be a mismatch for any team with tradiional PGs. This team always has 4 players (sometimes all 5) on the court that are comfortable with the ball in their hands. There will be games where the matchups wotk against us, but the great majority of the time, ILL will have the mismatch advantages. I hope I can get used to the ball movement that uses the clock to get the best shot. They look like a team that has played together for a long time. I remember watching a team like this once before. It might have been around 2005.
Yeah, I’m down in the panhandle of FL for two weeks looking at a house. I made the mistake of walking into a sports bar this afternoon with 40 (yup, 40) tv’s all tuned to the ‘Bama/Georgia game. You could have heard a pin drop when I asked them to change just one tv to the Illinois-Rutgers basketball game.
Disagree. Outside of injuries it falls on the coach.last year kinda sucked, no doubt. that said, most of the blame doesn't fall on Brad
one more thing: as frustrating as last season was, imagine how frustrating it was for Underwood
Ayo had amazing vision and looked like Devin Hester picking his way through a punt coverage when he got in transition. TJ's size and speed and aggression going to the basket is unmatched. Not picking a side, both are wonderful to watch.
Disagree, Underwood could not have seen the head cases of sky, Epps and Mayer. This team has chemistry in their favor last year did not.Disagree. Outside of injuries it falls on the coach.
They showed a better angle going into the subsequent commercial break and, unless my eyes deceived me, it was not between the defender's legs.Did my eyes deceive me or did Cohawk deliver that pass BETWEEN THE LEGS of the second defender?
