Not bad for one game's work.

Ken Pom - from 26th to 18th
Bart Torvik - from 41st to 32nd
Evan Maya - from 28th to 16th

Great win. Loved Brad's demeanor in the post-game press conference. Can tell he thinks he has a team with some upside. Love having great defense and rebounding as the baseline. If we can add improved ball security and offensive efficiency to that mix, look out ....

Also loved that he called out our free throw rate against Kansas in the post-game comments, as our FTR in that exhibition game (57.1) was a big contributor to getting that win and is an outlier relative to the games played so far. Our FTR was 39.7 in our first regular season game (vs. Eastern Illinois), and below 30 in each of the last six games. Unlimited fouls in the exhibition accounts for a chunk of the difference, but we were driving the ball opportunistically and getting to the line. Glad that has not gone unnoticed...

Did they put it on for you?

Ice Hockey Reaction GIF by NHL
They did, but they did seat us in the very back corner of the restaurant next to some Georgia fans, who were not pleased when I was standing up and yelling "YES!" on some of the outstanding Illini plays. Hence the need for a bail bondsman . . . . 🤣

Finally, they came out ready to play. I credit Guerrier for getting us off to a great start as he was a force in the first few minutes. The 3 point shooting was good, free throws were better, rebounding was tremendous and the D seem to get better as the game went on. I will give Hawkins credit for playing a good defensive game against Omoryuri [although all his points I believe came against Hawkins but still a good game. The entire team played together with TJS and Domask leading the way, good balanced scoring. Never saw Dra [would have been good to get him in the 2nd half with the game salted away to give him a taste. BIG action] I still like Dancing Bear starting over COHawk. Hope they don't sit on their laurels, they need to focus on FAU on Tuesday. I think it will take another great effort to take them down.

Illinois was much more effective against the press break in 2nd half - Coleman was good to great in 2nd half.

No DGL
No DD in second half ?
So here's my take on DGL- I think he certainly has offensive talent and can have a high ceiling on that side of the ball, but his defense and playing within the framework of the team both need a lot of work right now. And to be clear, this is something almost all freshmen in the B10 have historically struggled with. And as such, it gets hard to play them in a hostile road environment where possessions are at a premium

For DGL especially in this case, thru his first 7 games, he has been getting beat badly on the defensive end where opponents were singling him out and taking it to him when he was on the court. And offensively, while he does have a high ceiling, he's more in the trying to "get his" phase than playing within the flow of the offense. Again, this is perfectly normal for a freshman, and that's why most freshman guards in the B10 just don't see much playing time unless you are either forced into it or their offense is just too good to bench. Thru 7 games, out of all the players on the team, DGL rated lowest for me in the time he played. So it makes sense to me that he didn't get time tonight. That said, if he continues to work hard on both sides of the floor and take advantage if the opportunities he can get, this can certainly change.

#2 and #3 are going to be an enormous issues, especially late in games. We had a run vs Marquette where we got up 5 or 6, then couldn't handle the ball and ended up down 7. Up 17 or 18 today in the first half, the lead was almost completely because of the same issues.

I love Ty, but let's face it....he's part of the opponents game plan with regards to weaknesses to exploit.
We do not have a PG issue

I also think having certain players NOT on the team this year (MM) has allowed TSJ to assume the alpha male , leader of the pack mentality in what he does in practice and in the games.......Pikiell made it a point in his presser to single out TSJ's improved shooting ability this year .....It said it looks like TSJ spent a ton of time in the gym to prepare for this season........

BTW , my fever is now 100.3 *.....I think the Illini's blowout performance had something to do with it.........................JMHO
Hopefully we also have a lower incident of caffeine overdose this year

This is just my thought, but the person who said that playing Ty at the point allows for the “all out” switching that BU has wanted to do for some time Is right on. Now if any of the guards get in foul trouble (I include Luke, MD, TSJ and Ty in that category) then the first guard off the bench is JH. Ok we loose a little on D gain a little on O in theory, but it mostly still allows for the switching.

That leads to who will be our next guard off the bench if 2 of the three in parentheses get in foul trouble. Well at this point it is Nico or DGL, one is a point the other is a potential scorer. I think that is very much why Harris RSed. We have defense and at best he would have been fighting Nico and DGL for time. He needed to get his offensive game at least serviceable.
In the old days DGL would have red shirted, but as it is today he could see time due to either foul problems or just a perfect match up situation.
We have so much length out of our top 9 players that it is tough not to have a rotation of them.

Just my 2 cents?

Adding to @altgeld88’s comments, it really is a good place to watch a game, and the RU people are very nice folks. We met both students and alums in a few different places and everyone was very friendly. They are also a very supportive fan base, which makes it fun.

Not sure if the numbers will validate this, but it feels like this year, the Illini have more reliable 3-point shooters, compared to the last few years.

Goode hit a three to put the Illini ahead by double digits--I just assume now that he'll hit most of those three's. Good thing to have.

It's also a good feeling to have that stud (Shannon) to score at will, or score when his team needs a big basket, or get to the free-throw line--very similar to Ayo.

Who will that be next year? Going to miss Shannon.

Not only reliable 3pt shooters, but we’re shooting them in the flow of the offense due to unselfish play and shooters being in the right spots on the floor.

This is going to be such a fun season to watch. This is such an unusual lineup. If you consider the 9 man rotation we saw yesterday, ILL has one 6'-4" player and 8 betwen 6'-6" and 6'10". 1 first year player, 1 second year player, 1 third year player, and 6 four+ year players, and most have very high BB IQ. I don't know if Ty Rodgers is going to be a great facilitator (not really necessary with this much experience), but he will be a mismatch for any team with tradiional PGs. This team always has 4 players (sometimes all 5) on the court that are comfortable with the ball in their hands. There will be games where the matchups wotk against us, but the great majority of the time, ILL will have the mismatch advantages. I hope I can get used to the ball movement that uses the clock to get the best shot. They look like a team that has played together for a long time. I remember watching a team like this once before. It might have been around 2005.
