I'm curious why so many believe that by starting TJL earlier in the season he would have put up the same numbers as he did last night. Maybe he needed the time to get himself acclimated to the speed of the game? That if he played 20+ minutes on day 1 he would maybe have played a lot worse, lost confidence, and then NOT put up the numbers he put up last night. I don't dissect individual performance enough to have firm conclusions on this stuff. But maybe, despite the fact that Groce sucks and he doesn't know X's and O's and can't develop and should be fired, etc, etc, that just maybe Groce did a good thing in unleashing him at this point in the season?

I'm probably wrong.

You are not wrong

I think TJL is probably still playing a bit apprehensively on the offensive end for fear of getting yanked for trying to do to much.I bet the best is yet to come.

What is the judgement of TJL's defense. Looks like he is quick enough but size obvious disadvantage. Does he grade a "C"?

For all the good offense in this game, the best play didn't even result in a bucket. Midway through 2nd half, Lucas whipped a one handed no-look half court pass to Finke under the bucket. Finke goes up without a dribble and it's 2 pts.

When's the last time any of us have seen that in a game?

A few times from Tate!

This game just goes to show if you can potentially do one thing well (offense/defense), double down on it try to win games that way even if it makes you even worse at the other thing.

Playing Tate all year at the expense of Lucas in the name of "defense" was just inexcusable. We're a garbage defense team, with the potential to be a good offensive team with a real point guard on the floor. Double down on the offense by putting Lucas at the point, Mav in at center, punt on defense, and you might be able to outscore a team you shouldn't beat.

Michigan is not... good. They came out and beat them like the should, which was very nice to see. Hopefully Groce doesn't screw around and think "I'll need an experienced (but garbage) defender on Trimble" while playing Tate and Abrams 25 minutes.

If it were only that easy. Unfortunately, we won't always shoot like we did last night.

No, but trying to be marginally less terrible defensively at the expense of an attacking offense will ensure we never shoot that way again.

Not trying to dog a fellow Sox fan too much, but it seems that play DID result in a bucket? :)

Anybody notice how often Michigan doubled up on Lucas when he was initiating the offense? Sometimes it took a little longer to get going, but once he found the right guy, Michigan was scrambling to recover and Illinois got a lot more open looks. Yeah, Michigan is pretty terrible defensively, but I wonder how much that strategy contributed to Illinois' higher shooting percentage. Lucas sees the court really well and forces other teams to make tough choices to stop him. Nice to see an Illini point guard affect the game like that.

I am going to go ahead and say that I believe that Lucas is going to be one of he best point guards that will wear the orange and blue.

Lets just talk about passing.

We have not had a guard with this level of passing skill in some time.
Vision, timing, accuracy. Easily his most highly developed game.

I have no problem at all with the behind-the-back.

Good job on post #1. Hope Lucas continues to affect other teams in the same way on all our future wins.

We beat osu and there's 3 pages of postings. We lose to maryland and get 9 Pages. Typical[/QUOTE said:
It took a little over 2 days from the end of the game to get to 9 pages of postings for the Maryland game.
The postings on the Ohio State postgame thread topped off at 7 pages.
It has taken less than one day to get to 9 pages of postings on this, the Michigan Postgame thread.
Nothing is typical and apparently I have too much time on my hands

I'm not ready for that level of commitment yet, but I am really impressed so far. I have no problem with the behind-the-back, either. Basketball should be fun! Of course, we didn't lose by one...

I'll defend Jaylon Tate to my last breath. Doesn't mean I'm against TJL. But Jaylon chose to come here and be an Illini. He puts out 100% every time he's been on the floor. And that's all I ask from any kid who chooses to play for Illinois.
So one of us is right here.
It's never personal. Tate is incredibly fortunate to get a ride at Illinois and lots of playing time. Illinois is fortunate that he has largely been a good citizen and clearly made an impression on the coaches.

That said, playing time is a privilege. His time as a starter has gone, but he's in a rare group of kids that got to start at this level. He's had some good games, I'm happy for him.

I rewatched last nights game just to watch TJL on defense.I never saw his man score a single point. And he deflected 2 passes which resulted in turnovers.I'm really not getting the bad defense wrap he's getting by a few posters here.

#224
Enlighten me then.Tell me his weakness.

I'm not going to go re-watch the tape, but it's not hard to imagine that he missed off-ball rotations/help, switches, etc. I've advocated for TJL to get minutes as long as anyone, but it's entirely common for true frosh to struggle defensively.

But, just to answer your question with a specific point, he will always be limited as a defender by his size. He doesn't have great or elite quickness to make up for it (which will also limit his ceiling a little bit offensively), but he does have great feel for the game that helps him overcome the size/athleticism deficiencies, which is entirely welcome as quite a few guys on our roster do not have similar feel.

When was the last time we won a game and Malcolm Hill was hardly mentioned in a post game thread?
