So, was Hawkins taking a shot here or was he tossing it off the backboard for the putback?
Punch???I missed the game. Did Juwan punch anybody in the game today?
Have to say… I like everything about this post. Well stated!CBS Commentator Bill Raftery said of Coleman Hawkins today at one point, “He’s playing like CONNIE Hawkins!”
Old School ball fans will appreciate the reference. As will Coleman if he hears about it.
It’s a beautiful thing when a talented player who has lost confidence a bit finds it again and feels that mojo and blossoms to let that talent loose.
Basketball is about many things. And one of the biggest is the ebb-and-flow of confidence that a player or a team has at any given point. Everything from clicking together and rolling to looking lost and heaving bricks. It happens during a game. It happens during a season. And it happens during a career.
Can’t let doubt or disappointment creep in. Don’t over-think things. Play loose and with confidence. Trust yourself.
Goode is next up on the confidence train. Needs to hit some shots and feel himself contributing more on the ‘O’ side. The next one to blossom.
And with 7 of the top 10 teams losing yesterday... March is going to be FUN.
I really think they should count a blown front end as two misses, not just one. We had a chance for two points, got none.We really gotta work on our free throw shooting. 15-25 (60%) vs. 22-25 (88%). This game got close because of that disparity.
It was textbookCurbelo was very good in pick and roll situations today. The bounce pass to Kofi in the second half was high level execution.
With the terrible shots we were throwing up at the end of the shot clock before he came back in I will take that, Its one he normally hits. Yes it would have been better with 5 secs on shot clock vs 15, but still better than Plummers 3 early in the clock a couple of games when we in about the same situation. Especially when Trent passed up a shot before giving it to Plummer in an obvious signal to run clock.I love Belo, but he really needs to be coached up on clock management. Kofi needs to practice shooting double the free throws. I want both of the to succeed, but they have work to do.
Just name the film room after him . Frazier Film RoomWhat can we do for Trent Frazier that's different than just retiring his jersey? I feel like he needs something extra special. Like name the meeting room after him or something. Just incredible how much of himself he's given to this program.
No, never give any ground, not one damn inch. (Yellowstone quote of the day)I'm not going to complain about them. But I'm also not going to compliment them.
When Dick Butkus tweets out to you, what more can you say. Trent your an Illini for life. For a kid from Florida, recruited by another coach, taking a back seat to a program changer. Just not sure we will ever see a greater Illini than Trent.Just name the film room after him . Frazier Film Room
That and Plummer doesn't fight through screens very well and has a hard time keeping close to his man. Most likely a byproduct of lack of emphasis with his previous program.I think our guard size plays a big role in our defensive struggles.
I'd rather get our third try against them in the final four.I want to play Purdue. Third times a charm.
Going to need him against the Murray bros. and Iowa.I am so impressed with Hawkins. I was hopeful this is what he’d grow into. He’s playing excellent defense, bringing the energy on rebounds, he hustles, but his BB IQ is manifesting on top of all of that. He has great court awareness, he’s making great pass/shoot decisions, and he seems to stay in the flow of the offense and defense. I’d love to see him start at PF and even get some solid backup C minutes. The kid is a winner.
I'm definitely glad we've recognized that with Hawkins. I just wish we'd have played him this way all year with his size. I believe we'd have won that Maryland game, Rutgers, and possibly Arizona. But maybe this is what we needed to go through as a team in order to get to this point! I trust Underwood and staff. I like that Underwood is willing to change things up and not be stubborn. He wants these guys to play and play their butts off! Sometimes he keeps the leash a little too tight on some guys, but I see progress in regards to that. He just demands that level of excellence and effort. But mostly it's effort! Let's go guys! I feel this is gonna be a special year and one to remember! I-L-L ️️Coleman Hawkins is helping us win games lately, and Trent makes big shots! Really frustrating watching us sometimes, especially when we go to the line. Luckily it hasn't cost us more than it has this year. Hoping we can reverse that and put things together in a couple weeks.
I'm glad we finally got someone to take advantage of how they are calling that. That's the the way I said Hawkins needs to go up a few weeks ago. He's definitely been doing better the last couple of games on that. He got some bad calls against him today.I was stunned the refs didn't call a foul on that "vertical contest". We are talking about the Illini AT Michigan in a close contest down the stretch. Illinois usually doesn't get those no calls.......
As good as Kofi is he actually has a lot to work on.I love Belo, but he really needs to be coached up on clock management. Kofi needs to practice shooting double the free throws. I want both of the to succeed, but they have work to do.
He was doing his best freshman-Belo-I'm-in-the-air-and-really-don't-know-what-to-do-with-the-ball imitation. Good on him for tango-ing on, following his shot, and providing a highlight and a big smile for us all.So, was Hawkins taking a shot here or was he tossing it off the backboard for the putback?
Kofi does practice free throws and is very good at them. I think it's just trying to calm himself down when shooting for his touch during the game. If you notice he takes a few deep breathes and tries to relax before shooting them. His adrenaline is going and he's pretty amped up when playing of course.I love Belo, but he really needs to be coached up on clock management. Kofi needs to practice shooting double the free throws. I want both of the to succeed, but they have work to do.
Agree completely. Haven't thought of Connie in years, BTW. RIP. He was a star and had a really unfortunate, difficult path to the NBA, being unfairly accused in a point-shaving scandal and expelled from Iowa as a freshman. The fact that he finally got there, starred, and became a Hall of Famer is a testament to his perseverance as well as talent.CBS Commentator Bill Raftery said of Coleman Hawkins today at one point, “He’s playing like CONNIE Hawkins!”

We defeated Wisconsin. They didn't defeat us! Somethings wrong with that. We only played once and that was a home game for us. We won the only meeting this year against Wisconsin. So the question is, do we want a share (4 way) of a BIG regular season championship or an easier path to more q1 wins and really playing for March. If we end in a 4 way tie we are the 4 seed looking at Rutgers then Purdue. Probably controversial, but maybe we want Wisconsin to beat Purdue so we would stay away from Purdue until the final game (which is a meaningless game)?
