Im curious as to how many unranked high school players get drafted every year as in Spoons case. Im sure it is rare. It would be cool to compare or see percentages on star kids and the potential to get drafted. Something like " you have X% chance if you are top 100" so on and so forth.
This year it happened 2 times in the 1st Round....last year 3 times in the 1st Round alone. Last two years 63 total First Round picks and 5 not ranked seems high in my opinion.
First round is loaded with 4-5 star guys....no doubt about it!
Few things I have seen in last few years
Recruiting sites update their rankings. For example....Cal Swanson was a no star recruit and once Illinois offered/committed went from no star to 3 star quick. Bunch of sites update their rankings once a guy commits cause they finally watch more tape on them. Not always the recruiting site that catches these guys but the coaches first.
Bunch of the unranked and 3 star recruits from the last two drafts are OL and DL. Coming out of high school a ton of guys at these positions can still grow, need to get stronger and time to develop. 2022 NFL Draft had seven OL/DL First Round picks who were 3 star/unranked area. 2023 NFL Draft had 5 DL alone who were 3 star prospects.
2022 NFL Draft #4 pick Sauce Gardner (2nd CB chosen) rating coming out High School on 247 as 3 star .8344. Barely rated and not sure if that came after he committed or offered.
2023 NFL Draft #5 pick Devon Witherspoon unranked
Recruiting sites are good...always going to be guys that develop in college as well
