I've talked with a bunch of people close to situations and I'll give a quick run down.

-I get the feeling Northwestern leads for smith.

-You may lose a guy or two if Groce gets canned but we also may gain someone if the right coach is hired (Tim Finke?)

-Tracy Webster was at east side last night (smith, tilmon)
At O'Fallon today. (Pickett, Williams). A LOT of speculation going around that he isn't here recruiting for Cal. TIFWIW.

I live in eville now and I've heard the same about Smith

That's incredible if we lose Smith to northwestern! I don't think we have ever lost anybody we really wanted to Northwestern

Nothing lasts forever, not even Northwestern being abysmal at basketball.
Besides, I read the same comment as yours on a North Carolina board after Tilmon chose us.
Stuff happens.

Im just curious about one or two things.....

How can Smith has beaten (3) of the top (5) players currently ranked in the state according to prep hoops and two of them he has beaten twice his team be 20-1 and Prep Hoops IL. Scouting has him ranked #9 in the state and #198 out of 250 nationally.

Scott Burgess does a great job but I'm a lill confused. This is probably not the forum for this information just wanted to get a lil feedback/thoughts, good, bad or indifferent....

Maybe it's from their performance in AAU....

If course, UNC and Illinois presents a major difference in location. The rise of Northwestern just highlights our irrelevance. Them being ahead for Smith has more to do with Illinois and our place than anything else.

So Northwestern is passing us in basketball, too?

Huh. Didn't see that coming.

You answered your own question. By this point in the year most of the evaluations have already been made, rankings don't move much senior year unless someone just comes out of nowhere and gets serious interest from big programs (like mark has.) I expect him to move into the top 100 at least in the final rankings, but if he'd have been playing like this all summer long on the AAU circuit there's no doubt he would have been seen by a lot more people and be ranked higher. The local guys all know who he is, obviously, but a lot of the National guys are still trying to see him live. I know Brian Snow was at his game Friday, and it was his first time seeing him live.

I have heard the same. He is a good kid from a good family. The Groce situation is working against us on this one. I can't say that I blame him.

Look for Scout to also re-evaluate Smith.

It would likely only happen in a unique situation like we have now. If Groce was on solid ground, Smith would already be committed to Illinois, imo.

I wouldn't go that far.

I would.

I find all the "Northwestern leads" information to be sort of odd considering he just visited us (again).

There's some stuff going on behind the scenes. Northwestern may reap the benefits of this situation but if he wanted to go there he'd already be committed IMO.

He's waiting out to see how the Illinois situation pans out and he likely already realizes Groce isn't going to be retained. Tells me he's waiting to see who the new hire is.

I completely agree he is probably waiting out the situation here. He's already said he's not committing until after the HS season.

Maybe NW is leading the field right now, but I think as long as our coach next year even remotely pleases Smith, he's coming here, or a blue blood. He sat right next to Tilmon, they have to be decent friends and you cant tell me he didn't know what kind of chatter that would start.

Exactly. I guess it's fair to say, as the situation stands, they are leading until the coaching change is made at Illinois. When that change is made I expect them to be leading no longer.
