No, it's much better. I'd rather lose a recruiting battle to Izzo than NW any day.

I agree, and from a purely pragmatic standpoint, he would probably make NW substantially better whereas at MSU he likely takes a schollie that would otherwise go to a similarly talented player.

I agree.. You can hope to recruit nationally w/ a coach at a new program with an assistant who's never coached with him and you might have some modicum of success but your pitch is a lot stronger after winning some games with him.

It's essentially like being a salesman pitching a product he's never tried and the guy you're pitching it to can look that up.

As the father of an 18 year old I can tell you that kids of that age frequently do not have good reasons for the choices they make.

[FONT=&quot]Fire won 2 games last night, MS lost by 16, BBE 17u is in Vegas and beat Cal Supreme. No stats for any of those games that I can find. Did find this interesting back and forth with an Illini fan and Mike Irvin.

That guy is right. The whole thing is a very bad look for Irvin. What kind of coach spends that much time trashing a teenage former player because he's butthurt over a decision he made? It doesn't matter what your opinion is of THT's talent or future, mouthing about it on twitter makes Irvin look petty and vindictive.

it'a already a 'thing' in the city and Mike really should just shut up. People will remember stuff like this.

Bossi's Best: All-Second Live Period Team

July is all about the under-the-radar prospect trying to impress big-name coaches when he finally gets to play on the big stage. That's were Amanze Ngumezi and Zion Griffin fit in on this list.

Playing for 1Family, Ngumezi had the benefit of suiting up for a well known shoe sponsored (Adidas) team, while Griffin went out and earned his respect against the shoe company teams. A long and athletic forward, Ngumezi has hit a new level with his game to go from intriguing prospect to no brainer high major. As for Griffin, he went out to the Hardwood Classic with the Hoopers Basketball Club and put up huge numbers against shoe sponsored teams. An athletic and tough 6-foot-5 wing, Griffin, like Ngumezi, is going to get serious consideration for the post-summer 2018 Rivals150.

Zion Griffin has as much upside as any wing we've been recruiting. Not quite the uber athlete DJ Stewart was but this kid is a stud.. Just under the radar because his aau team doesn't play in all the elite events but they played in one and he tore up 2 of the best aau teams in the nation. Can score every way possible.

I don't see how this is even a point.

Antigua's pitch becomes much stronger if Underwood has a surprise NCAA tournament year and puts Illinois back on the radar a bit. Which I think will happen.

The last time Illinois was a basketball name these kids were toddlers... Most of them know absolutely nothing about the school and Underwood will remedy that soon.

I couldn't agree more. Makes Irvin looks like a child.

Yea of course, but the problem is that makes it his 3rd recruiting class. Need to land some solid talent now if you want to keep things getting better. I'm not saying he needs to land all 5 stars right away, but it's why recruits like Mark Smith, and now Ayo are so important. Landing back to back Illinois Mr Basketball PGs absolutely makes this team more attractive and hopefully helps us to land at least solid 4* talent.

That being said, the best I am hoping for are 1-2 of Conditt/Castelton/Sow

Yup, it really makes you wonder what his agenda is.

These are always going to be losing battles for coaches. Just don't go there.

I've put Irvin on blast a couple times on twitter over this. I'm also in that back and forth. It's ridiculous and it's been going on since THT left the fire.

We've landed some solid talent already and the 2018 class will be pretty good with or without Ayo. He's not a make or break recruit and the bar hasn't already risen that before he's coached a game at Illinois he should land back to back Mr. Illinois basketballs...

We really need wings more than we need a pg in this class. He has nice size at the PG position but frankly I'm not enamored with Ayo's game at all. I know he's going to be a productive college player but he doesn't blow me away. I think Mark Smith is better.

If you haven't watched the second 6 minute Zion Griffin video I linked I'd do so. That kid is a stud and is only underrated because his h.s. an aau teams. He destroyed 2 of the best aau teams in the country and is going to be VERY good in college. He's more skilled than DJ Sterwart.. Not the athlete (few are).

There's the 2 kids from North Carolina on the same aau team (I don't think they're likely personally) and there's Jericole Hellems who blew up too who plays with BBE (Okoro and EJ Liddell).

I'd like to see Zion Griffin and Hellems both join the class.. Ayo is meh to me. I like THT a lot and think if Ayo would pass you could possibly see Underwood push for Griffin/Hellems/THT/Conditt.

Illinois has to pursue Ayo hard and Underwood might love his game but it wouldn't be terrible to me if he decided to go elsewhere so this stupid THT/Ayo beef thing can be ignored. Underwood is in a tough position on that with all the talent behind Ayo on the fire..

Obviously you make very good points about the wing positions and I agree I would love to have at least 1 if not 2 of THT/Griffin/Hellems. That being said, this team works best with multiple guys that can handle the ball and flat out score. That is something that Ayo absolutely does in addition to having excellent size at the PG spot. Ayo could play anywhere from the 1-3 positions in this offense. Also, I wasn't trying to say that the bar has been set for BU to land back to back Mr Basketballs but landing Ayo would help to set that bar and show that Illinois is a premier destination for top recruits in Chicago.

Whoa, there... Twelve months ago we were looking forward to getting our first Mr. Basketball in a while, whether it was Jordan Goodwin or Tilmon. We failed our way into success!

I am all for getting another Mr. Basketball this year, but Ayo doesn't get the hardware til the end of the year. If someone steps up, as happened just last year, then i am happy to have them too.

Of course, but let's be honest, this class in Illinois isn't extremely strong and so Ayo and THT stand at the top with it being more likely that Ayo wins the Mr Basketball title.

I'm in no way saying Ayo is ours, I'm saying that landing Ayo would be massive for recruiting going forward because of what it says about Illinois and BU.

.. except with his right hand. He does practially everything with only his left hand, which is a little concerning. I agree with you on the rest.
