It's interesting that Larry Brown was just in C/U in October for a coach's clinic.

Could be something in his shoulder? He was a pitcher. I have a small tear in my shoulder that affects my throwing but nothing else. I can swing a bat, or play basketball pain free, but if I let loose with a throw my shoulder will be sore for a while. I can play catch, and toss lightly, only hurts if I throw hard.

I'm sure if I played competitive D1 basketball there'd be potential for further injury, but since I'm an out of shape 31 year old has been who shoots a basketball once a year and plays beer league softball I just deal with it.
It could also be a UCL injury in his elbow, requiring Tommy John surgery. That kind of injury would mess up a pitcher big time, but it doesn't really matter much for the majority of other physical activities.

Very interesting. Expect us to go after him, but think he'll have several, if not numerous, better offers WRT projected playing time. That 15-18 mpg ceiling will hurt us. And he's not really a center. SMU and various other sources say he's 6' 11" now, so maybe he is a (non-traditional) 5. Still, definitely worth pursuing.

We do have the open scholarship in our favor, that will limit some of the prospective suitors.

Do we really know playing time is the issue? 14.6 minutes for a freshman isn't all that bad.

This article also mentions playing time, though doesn't directly say that's why he's transferring.

I'd guess that the SMU staff made some promises to these kids that it isn't keeping. Combine that with the drama around the program and you've got a recipe for kids jumping ship.

I'm not 100% sure Froling is the kind of big we need. I'd prefer and big body glass cleaner to a finesse player, but a player of his talent level is tempting to go after.

Playing time may not have been a factor in why Froling is leaving, but it will definitely be a big factor in his next selection.

That we have a ride available is huge. Just from that alone he's going to be an easier get than Epperson. Agree, prefer a glass cleaner, defensive presence. But there's no way we can ignore a talent like Froling, especially when we were a finalist in his first go round. And the kid brings serious beef, listed as 260 pounds. Fletch could turn him into a monster.

He is talented, but the idea of another big who can't move/jump well is almost painful to me watching our rim protection issues this year.

On the other hand, he is a center and we have a five star center coming in who would get a half year start on him at Illinois. Will he want to find a place with more of an opening?

I found these two comments confusing. The first one made me think that he is a finesse player, thin and quick, playing more of an inside forward.

The second one made me think of a big slow player.

I don't know anything about his game. Can anyone offer a quick summary?

Slow a foot and lacks defense....should blend in well with our Bigs.:)

Thanks for the link, think you are right that he is leaving for more than playing time, along with mentioning role/pt., sacrifcie of leaving home, looking abroad, & SMU only having 2 bigs on the rooster. With 1 a senior big this year he looks like he would have been penciled in as the starter for SMU next year, sooner than he could start with any college transfer options. He might also be open to going home for the spring & waiting for next fall to start at university 2, when all sorts of scholarships open up.

I'd take him in a heartbeat, but this is probably wide open with possibilities.

Seen Froling once live this year. Surprised he's leaving because of playing time. He's doughy, and should use this redshirt year working on his body. I don't actually think he could play 30 min against a non-cupcake. He's a "finesse" player because he's out of shape and doesn't have the strength to play on the block. He's big and slow because well, he's big and slow.

Got a decent touch, and supposedly has range out to 3 (though the only shot I saw him take from out there was an airball from the top of the arc). My guess is he's leaving because Larry Brown sold him a bag of goods about being around his 4 years in Dallas. I think the buzz on his recruiting was a bit too optimistic. If he works on his body, he could be a solid player, but I obviously have some doubts.

Sounds like a perfect fit for us since our fanbase wants to redshirt everyone.

When I'd play dynasty mode on those old college hoops games, there wasn't a single freshman that went unredshirted. Growth was a pillar of coaching tenure ;). Also, Illinois won every championship ever from the time they hired me till whenever I got bored:illinois:

You're hired! If Lane Kiffin can get another head coaching job, you're equally as qualified to coach our basketball program based on your stellar fake coaching career!

In all seriousness, though, has anyone heard anything concrete about us reaching out to Froling, or is this all just speculation because we recruited him before?

At this point we should just cancel basketball for a year and have the entire team redshirt

How about we recruit 12 freshmen at a time, redshirt them all for 4 years, and every 5th year roll out a team of superseniors who have been practicing like crazy forever.

How pissed would you be if your future boss called you up, asking you to come work for him, selling you on the team and company, but really it's all about the excitement for working for this legendary boss. So you decide to take the plunge and move to a new city to work for this guy. And then two months later, he resigns. Two months! That sucks.

A couple more mid year transfers announced, just don't get why these guys move at this time....

Isaac Copeland - Georgetown
Sam Cunliffe - Arizona St
Tim Coleman - Utah

Something isn't right for them where they are, that much seems obvious.
Is it a clever strategy, having less competition? Maybe?

POTD. The only guys on the active roster that year will be walk-ons whose tuition is being paid by Luther Head.

That would eliminate the chemistry issues about playing together pretty quickly eh?

I thought I would save #8000 for something special and the above post and Your Honor you are special!! This board has a lot of classy people and some real collective intelligence. Far too many people to thank, but how about a group THANKS to all those that make this board what it is. Onto 16000.:thumb:
