Counterpoint: He played with two other top 25 scorers in Illini history, number two on the all time rebound list, and number three in the all time blocked shots list. That feels like a lot of help.

I agree with your assessment that we as a group get carried away with our player comparisons, but I think you're doing the same with Dmac. He was a great passer. A good scorer, but his perimeter defense would fit in nicely on this years team. Could he have been a starting PG on an elite team? Sure. But if he was the best player on your team, you weren't going to be much better than we were during his four years here.

His defense was even worse that this years team. Would fit because of lack of lateral quickness like this year, but paired it with a complete lack of interest. The only thing that made him play D at all was Weber yelling at him constantly. One of my favorite Illini of all time on the offensive end, though.

Villanova winning it all last year showed that it is possible to win a championship playing primarily guards. Getting guards that are multidimensional is huge in college. That is what excites me about recruits like Damonte Williams and Mark Smith. Strong guards that can do so many different things with their game. Rebound, defend, and score in many different ways. It was such a bummer that Damonte got injured because he was having a beast of a senior season.

YeS... I hope damonte has a strong recovery. He was looking really good this season

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Tigers win a Classic over Althoff

Smith hit that level against Althoff. The 6-foot-4 point guard made 13 of 19 shots from the field, including 3 of 7 from the arc, and 6 of 7 free throws. He also had eight assists and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

“I just played my game,” said Smith, who joined his parents in talking with Groce long after the game. “Do whatever I can, rebound, get to the basket, shoot the open shot if it’s there and find my open teammates, try to make plays for them. That’s all I did.”

I know one prefers to have a couple of athletic bigs. How big was Lowell Hamilton? That team did OK as I recall.

Smith is the better of the two!!n What a blessing losing Goodwin may turn out to be. Seems like a better kid than Goodwin too!

Oh ya...did we offer tonight?!? Cmon with it?!?!

What are his plans for New Year's Day? Might he be at a college basketball game?

Ford was at Collinsville last night. Probably would have been there tonight but he had a game. Goodwin is going to be playing 35 minutes from the gitgo on that team.

In 16 years of following Illinois basketball, Demetri McCamey is easily the most undeservedly maligned player I have seen play at Illinois. He was very, VERY good. I would go as far as to call him the best player in the Post-Dee era. If he were recruited around properly, his perception at Illinois would be vastly different.

Judging by their results so far this year, I'm guessing he'd be the best player on their team right now.

I am one who would love to have 1 or 2 Lowell type players down low, I think Black could play the 5 just fine, But if he is your 5 when the shot goes up you need others to go after the Rebound as well not all run to the other end like we do now.
I would love to see a line up of Black, DJW, AJ, Kipper and TJ the size is still good you have guys who can run and jump and a kid who can really pass the ball would love to see them play for about 7 mins and just see what happens, with their quickness and ablitlty to jump they should be able to play a good zone even full court I would hope but I just do not see that ever happening here

What is getting out of hand?

Considering KState offered and I don't think their coaches have been around, it has been stated multiple times the kid wants an Illini offer bad, this roster going forward could use more athleticism, Smith deserves an offer.

We had an offer for Goodwin. They are roughly the same size from what I saw in the game, good win is longer and thicker, more rugged and a better rebounder, projects to 2-3 at next level (or 1 at SLU lol). smith is a far better ball handler and has better court vision, and has nicer form on jumper, looks like 1-3 at next level.

These two players have very different ceilings, but Smiths rise seems similar to Anthony Davis. Granted the differences between the reasons for the rise are different (growing 7 inches in a year vs. deciding on basketball just right before senior year) I would hate to see a player we could possibly lock up, start to look elsewhere when the offers start pouring in.

Offer coming...will be reported soon. Next few days. Lettttts go

Nice! It would be fairly shocking if Groce didn't offer after last night's performance. The kid is a legit CG at 6'4 with plus athleticism and a high motor. Regardless of roster balance, it's a no-brainer at this point. Hopefully we can lock Smith up and reel in Epperson or a good 5th year big.

If we add Smith, do we continue recruiting Finke as hard? We'd obviously still take Ayo or Ramey, but taking a big in 2018 would become virtually mandatory.

The next kid is always the best kid and gunna save the program. Illini fans are uncanny sometimes.

What a bizarre post. Nobody has proclaimed him a savior. Fans have proclaimed him as somebody who deserves an offer and can play high major d1 basketball.
