True. I wasn't necessarily saying why would you go there over UI, because obviously we have been bad for several years. But it's just interesting to see some of these big time recruits going there over the other typical places

I mean, Goodwin was a big time recruit to us but he's still barely top 50 nationally. This isn't a 5 star, Kris Wilkes, one and done possible type of athlete going to an A-10 school. That's a local kid, who actually rooted for SLU growing up, committing to that school under unlikely circumstances (new coach selling him on playing a brand new position, some weird a## dream). Now, if Gordon commits there, I'll be eating some crow as he is the real deal, blue chip type of kid.

EDIT: Woah that happened fast...good lord

Do kids have to take the SAT? I thought back in my day you could get by with just the ACT.
Right now in Illinois, you can take the ACT, but the state is moving towards using the SAT as the new state test for schools to give. This year, we are giving both, but next year only the SAT.

Well that was bizarre....

No kidding. Went 0-100 real quick...

Gordon added this:

"Coach Ford and (assistant) Corey Tate were also huge reasons why I want to play at Saint Louis," Gordon said. "Coach Tate is a close family friend and he's a great mentor."

Just like Goodwin. When I saw those 3 CBs last night right after he put out his final 3, I kind of went hmmm.
At any rate, Travis is going to have a team to build around with JG, Gordon and French. Probably only getting started. And let's face it. If he had come in here and started out like that we'd be euphoric.

Unless he has a special connection, I can't see why he wouldn't want to play on the bigger stage. State Farm Center, Bigger Crowds, Bigger stadiums around the Big 10, surrounded by a great recruiting class. Am I missing something? What is the allurement of VCU?
Probably the fact that they've been a vastly better program than us the last 10 years.
Unfortunately, ILLGOLF is spot on.
  • VCU - 6 straight NCAAs, including a F4 in 2011. 24+ wins each of the last ten season. New head coach didn't seem to screw anything up in his first season.
  • Illinois - No NCAAs since 2013, two losing records in the last 10 years. Head coach is trending backwards and on hot seat.
Now, since they play in different conferences, it's hard to directly correlate the level of each program. For instance, would Illinois' record be better if they played in the A10 and vice versa, would VCU have run off 24+ win seasons in the B1G? Of course, this isn't fair since if Illinois was in the A10, they'd probably have lesser players and vice versa for VCU.

This is the first I've heard that it's settled. And good for high school fans. Hope Thornton is on The Cube a lot because the South Suburbs is a little far for an old guy in the Fox Valley to go for games.
Michael O'Brien Verified account ‏@michaelsobrien Thornton: Alonzo Verge is in Harvey. Big year ahead for the Wildcats. 6-8 JR Orlando Allen is multi-talented. Watch SR Christian Andersen.

Also, it's early but anyone want to predict where Ramey ends up? JG doesn't really think Ford is going to let him play point all 4 years, does he?

To the last point, 6 of those 10 24+ win seasons were in the CAA and the 3 most recent have been in the weakened A10 (No Temple, Butler or Xavier). So yes, it is not a straight forward comparison. Still a question if Wade can keep them at this level, too.

Can someone give a quick rundown of Ford's coaching blunders over the years? It sounds like the dude can definitely recruit with the best of them, but everyone keeps saying he can't coach a lick...Just took a gander at his wikipedia page and it seems like he did fairly well at UMass.

No one in America did less with more talent than this bum did at Oklahoma State.

Yep. Without Tate Ford wouldn't have landed JG or Gordon. Can we flip Tate over to our staff? :thumb:
Do you think they both would have gone to Mizzou if Tate had stayed there?
This isn't about Tate as much as the "draw" of Travis Ford.

It's the combination. Kim Anderson and Tate are not the same as Ford and Tate.

Yeah I don't think even Goodwin will be able to will them to wins behind Ford. Although, they are gonnna play crap competition so...

A-10 is very different from Big 12...plus they'll be talented in 2018

When I was about 10 or so I saw Charlie at a cards game sitting a section over. I've got his "Spoon" autograph somewhere on an old Busch stadium ticket stub

Thad pretty neat. I just used to go to SLU games with my grandparents in the Spoonhour era so there's some sentimental value there. Plus, if we weren't going to get him, I'd rather Gordon have picked SLU like he did than Miznoz or Kansas, despite Ford.

I have watched numerous Ford coached games and they always leave me with the same impression as a coach "what the heck are they trying to do there". Players constantly seem to under perform and I have yet to find a set play or anything in particular that I like at all that they run. I know people have criticized Groce on here for the same thing, but I can find principle's and concepts I agree with in almost every Illini game I watch.
