You literally just described Groce from when we hired him.

Sure, and Groce fits that profile. But the differentiating aspect is that VCU has does that repeatedly, all 4 of their last coaches younger than Groce, 3 younger than the age of 33 with one of them in the late 20s. VCU does not shy away from their strategy either, in favor of loyalty, they continue in their path knowing very well that all of these coaches will most than likely leave for greener pastures and better programs. It takes guts to do so, but it has paid huge dividends for their program.

There's no way we'd part ways with Scruggs and then take Verge. That's gotta be one of those uncommittable offers at this point right? Doubt Oregon would take him either.

Would have to think it is uncommittable. 3 of those 6 are not like the others. Ohio, Providence and Indiana State are a bit different than high majors. I don't really see why we would take him especially considering the concerns about him being able to qualify.

I predict prep school and reclassification to 2018. This kid has a lot of work left to do.

Prep school or Juco would be my guess as well. Seems highly unlikely that he will be able to get things done by 2017.

If we have an open scholarship and he is still uncommitted in the Spring then I think we would take him in a heartbeat. But this is only assuming his academics get cleared up.

100% disagree. Keep it for a 5th year transfer.

Yeah, but in the last 5 years, it is not that we have done better than SLU. They have made the NCAA 3 times and have always advanced to the round of 32 in those years. In the last 5 years, we have made the NCAA just once, advancing to round of 32.

Posters ask "why would anyone go to SLU" but the truth is that the same question could be asked about Illinois when we talk about competing with other HM schools in various recruitments. Yet, we always find reasons why a recruit should choose Illinois over MSU, IU, KU, UK, UCLA, etc.

Ford is a good recruiter and has definitely elevated SLU's status competing for recruits, especially in the MO and southern Illinois area.

I am starting to really dislike SLUs presence...

As it stands now, we have two open scholarships and no guarantees. I'm all in on Wilkes and Kiir and would take Wooten if Kiir turns us down which also seems likely. Are you wanting to use one on a 5th year and roll the other?

If you would have asked me my opinion a few months ago, I would have been all in on rolling a scholarship, but, as they say, one in the hand is worth more than two in the bush. We have been devoid of capable ball handlers for a few years now so I'm not ready to start turning talented kids down and hoping we can get some the following year. As long as a given player doesn't project to have an Ibby Djimde type of role and production then I say take them while we can. I'd take Verge if he qualifies and definitely any of Wilkes, Kiir, and Wooten.

Don't forget Epperson. I'd take any two 5th year guys. TJL, DMW and TF should be able to handle the ball handling, I'm not especially worried about that anymore. We need bigs in the next two classes.

I really disagree with you on this, I wouldn't be shocked to see us get a commit from someone in the 2019 class soon. That said I do not see us taking another 1/2 till 2018 we need bigs and if we don't get them we will just wait for 2018

I am with you on this, we need Kiir or any other big we can get this year. Of sourse we want wilkes if we can land him as well. but if we do not get Wilkes we need what ever we can get in the way of bigs be it Fr or 5th year guys, if we do not land Wilkes I wouldn't be to shocked to see Finke Commit so might take away one of the 2

Two totally different situations and recruitments imo. I've posted here before that I was told the Scruggs recruitment got a little hairy and we went in a different direction. Nothing concrete so I will not comment specifically but that is what has been floated out there so I think it would be misleading to say b/c we went a certain way with player A we will in noways take player B. Just two totally different recruitments imo....

As talented as Verge is, I would be very cautious on taking a player who has transferred every year in high school and according to reports has had some maturing to do. Give me players that are mature and don't need constant baby sitting. It appears the group we have this year fit that mold.

Players that will seriously pursue their degrees and work hard at their sport. I don't want to see my alma mater's reputation or that of Groce reduced because of a few athletes.
