Can someone give a quick rundown of Ford's coaching blunders over the years? It sounds like the dude can definitely recruit with the best of them, but everyone keeps saying he can't coach a lick...Just took a gander at his wikipedia page and it seems like he did fairly well at UMass.
8 seasons
11 RSCI top-100 commits (two in the top 10)
1 NCAA tourney win

Travis has them shut it down pretty quick.

St. Louis was in the tourney one time under Majerus. They won a first round game. That's it.

Yeah, but in the last 5 years, it is not that we have done better than SLU. They have made the NCAA 3 times and have always advanced to the round of 32 in those years. In the last 5 years, we have made the NCAA just once, advancing to round of 32.

Posters ask "why would anyone go to SLU" but the truth is that the same question could be asked about Illinois when we talk about competing with other HM schools in various recruitments. Yet, we always find reasons why a recruit should choose Illinois over MSU, IU, KU, UK, UCLA, etc.

Ford is a good recruiter and has definitely elevated SLU's status competing for recruits, especially in the MO and southern Illinois area.

Yeah I don't think even Goodwin will be able to will them to wins behind Ford. Although, they are gonnna play crap competition so...

Thus his success at UMASS. Wins when he's got much better horses than his average competition. He'll compete for an A-10 title with enough talent for a good coach to compete for the Big Ten title.

To the last point, 6 of those 10 24+ win seasons were in the CAA and the 3 most recent have been in the weakened A10 (No Temple, Butler or Xavier). So yes, it is not a straight forward comparison. Still a question if Wade can keep them at this level, too.

Whether Wade succeeds remains to be seen indeed, but VCU deserves a lot of credit in their hirings. They hire young, energetic coaches, well connected in the recruiting game, who favor exciting basketball. These coaches will move on to other jobs higher in the food chain, yet that has not discouraged VCU of maintaining their hiring strategy, despite attrition. In the process, VCU has elevated their program status. They never seem to divert from the profile of coaches they hire in favor of "loyalty" and that strategy has worked very well for them.

I can't wait until we have some good news for the Illini, whenever that may be.
Not sure if you've heard or not...pretty new news, but the Illini have a too 5 class (currently) including a five star center. Can't wait for some good news either.......

Do you think they both would have gone to Mizzou if Tate had stayed there?
This isn't about Tate as much as the "draw" of Travis Ford.

Wrong, this is A LOT about Tate. He's already being built up to be Ford's heir-apparent when he leaves.... This is just what's being said

I agree that most of this is about Tate (although you must give Ford credit for getting a guy that can do so repeatedly), but there's no guarantee this success at SLU can be prolonged. The two SLU recruits had genuine personal relationships with him from growing up in the area and playing on the circuit. What happens down the line when kids who are younger grow up with a different mentor and/or coach in their early development years. Do you just keep dumping that assistant for the AAU hotbead? I'm not saying Tate won't stick in college or even raise in the ranks and become a HC but right now SLU's recruiting is contingent upon one man.

So what? For your scenario to matter is looking like 5-10 years down the line. Right now, it's working unbelievably and it only took Ford and Tate 7 months to do what took Groce 5 years.

how about more like 2 or 3. Also, let's not act like Groce didn't come in and get Nunn and Hill. These are just 2 recruits that Tate had natural ties to. There's a finite number of high-major guys that he could have that relationship with. If these relationships were manufactured beyond their organic existence, then I might pause for concern.

Their success in the tournament isn't dependent on their conference strength though. They've proven they can play with the bigger schools in the tournament and other non-conference games. Look at it this way...watching both teams the last 10 years, Illinois would've wanted no part of them with their full court "havoc" defense they run and our severe lack of ball handlers.

Wonder if Izzo and MSU fans are getting a bit nervous about this or not. Seems like he's been 'theirs' since forever. .

That's the reason for the first 4 words in the post you quoted.

You can't really blame him for looking around. Although, I suppose you can blame him for looking around in a fashion that includes Alford. I have nothing against Sean Miller, though.
