I myself, like most others (with a somewhat of a sensible brain,) will read the comments about Whitmore and Bates, with no substance. Not gonna happen guys, Illinois is not "that" program.... YET :)
Not sure I agree with this … no idea where you live/are from, but I’ve anecdotally noticed Champaign and Central Illinois REFUSE to think of Illinois as big time. I don’t know if it’s because they see the Illini as too “local,” but the national perception of Illinois has already changed. We are current Big Ten champs, we were a 1-seed last year, we have been one of the 10-15 winningest programs in the country by winning percentage these last three years! “ILLINOIS” has been front and center plenty lately. I think we are “THAT program,” one of about 15.

I think it’s fair to say the wishlist sits at.
1. Cam Whitmore**
2. David Jones
3. Terrence Shannon
4. Bryce Hopkins
5. Courtney Ramey
6. Emoni Bates
LMAO w/ Whitmore and Hopkins on that list. I think the TSJ ship has sailed, as well. Realistic options: Jones or Ramey (but I'm guessing not both) and *maybe* a big like Reid. I'd personally love for IL to land Emoni Bates, but his *circle* apparently doesn't fit BU's culture. *shrug*

Sure hope you aren't Tyler with this attitude. Or anyone actually associated with the program. To act like it doesn't matter if one of maybe...3 returning players of note stays or goes is a terrible way to build a program. You might get a team every so often that wins big but at what cost? I hear all this talk about our "culture". We can't take Emoni Bates because he wouldn't fit it. But what you are saying is there truly is nothing to fit in to. Pushing out good players for marginally better players(or the hope that they are better) is not a team culture. It shows a complete lack of development or commitment from the coaches. And if this is the direction the program wants to take then no one can ever complain when the next guy leaves. Or the guy after that. This site should change its name because Illinois Loyalty would be dead.

Perhaps this is the direction of college basketball. If so mark it down as the beginning of its downfall. No one wants to have that kind of detachment from the players they root for. NBA free agency is bad, but this is way worse. At least NBA players typically get a multiyear contract before they bail. I don't know how the NCAA can sit back and continue to let this unfold each offseason. It's a joke.
I don't think 0440 is saying the Illini staff will constantly push out a ton of actual talent like ColeHawk every year. It's more grabbing talented players when they become available and want to join your program. If it's an upgrade over a current player, I think it's a no-brainer. But the staff isn't going to push out players that are major contributors to the team.

Now this is just a rumor but...I heard the NCAA is going to add a 3 point shot! This is not how basketball was supposed to...nevermind...

But you haven’t even given them a chance yet. What happened to developing kids, investing in them before you grab someone that not only may take their spot but the resources you promised them to develop?

Sounds a bit shady to me.
NIL and free one time transfers happened.

Sure, let's compare a 3 point shot to the 1400+ players transferring every year in terms of its impact on the game. Super comparable.

Wait a minute. So we should settle for jumpers then everytime? Should we do away with post ups altogether then?

What about exploiting a mismatch? How about when we go cold as a coal mine from
outside?…and we desperately need a score.

How about the Baylors, the Texas Techs, Houston’s, and the Virginias of the world that all generally guard slashers and straight line drives (uniquely) but exceedingly well. How about against a tough zone team. What if you can’t: beat ‘em down the court, or if they adjust take away the high post flash, and you simply
can’t shoot from 3pt land that day…

Sure, efficient execution, distort the zone,
ball reversal…blah, blah…but what if none of that works?

What else is there? How about a post up?
We don’t wanna go back the other way and be completely one dimensional towards the OTHER extreme do we? Because of some
recency bias of seeing Kofi mauled inside all year. Playing that way won us a regular season title…it works. I agree playing
fast paced and facing the basket more is appealing…but let’s not throw the baby out with the bath water.

Probably sounds that way, but I’m not trying to be snarky. I’m really not.
I just think a post up is a tool in the toolbox
you don’t wanna throw out. It’s part of basketball period. A lay up is the best shot in b-ball. But a contested post up
ain’t bad. And it’s sure as hell better than a contested J.
I have a feeling we have more tools in our toolbox this coming year...can't wait to see the season unfold...

I don't recall every having a team that is going to consist of zero starters from the prior year team, very few minutes played other than Hawkins. I am not sure whether or not I like college basketball as it exists today. On the other hand, I am sure the heck on this site every day now.

Hawkins is rounding into a good player. I wouldn't say he has a "ton' or is an NBA player. Certainly he isn't yet.

Exactly. And while the focus has been on giving the players more they have overlooked how the fans of the game(those ultimately paying the money) will accept the chaos that these 2 things together have created. I think it will be more negative than others apparently. NIL is great, but I don't see how the one time transfer can continue along with it. It hurts too much of what makes college sports popular.

This may be a naive question, but if the players and recruits were informed of the Jay news last night, how do Cam and his people go from reaching out to other programs (Illini/ Chester included?), to things being smoothed over with Nova the following morning?
Maybe nobody got any sleep last night, late night negotiations in a figuratively smoke filled room.

Fans seem to be accepting the chaos just fine:
Talent = Viewable = Ratings = $$$

My point is both items are here....gotta live with or rail against it...on this we just disagree...

One started in 1986 and the other in 2021. I'd say we aren't quite locked in to the new one sticking around. They have now seen the impact and can now adjust. Do you think it actually has a positive impact on the game?

I think the transfer rule is ending...it's a one time use... then you have to wait a year unless you get a waiver...I didn't like the DH in baseball at 1st either..

Portal movement ain't done yet. It'll be interesting to see how many we add, and if BU choses to keep a scholly open, should a midseason transfer materialize again next year.
I'll say, it's been a wild ride. My offseason self-prediction was to be fully caught up in Pru's Old-Age-Anon thread by now, but that'll have to wait for the moment.
