Actually, I think they do already. I'm not sure why you believe they'd spend less. I'd guess we have a richer fan base. But that doesn't mean they pony up cash.I don’t think Miami is going to outspend us/our alumni.

Murray and others but there are still to come available. BUs "second wave!"Please tell me who they missed that would have been a good fit? News flash… the players they have eyes on are still available.

I think you're just snakebitten after the Groce years. Making the tourney is a relatively low bar to clear for a program like ours and with the talent level we are bringing in. That's what made the Groce years that much more frustrating. Our lack of returning experience certainly may portend a down year, but with the state our program is in, a down year doesn't necessarily) mean missing the tournament. Culture and talent matter, and we are finally back to having both.I'm not incorrect, Illinois is going to be one of the least experienced teams in the major conferences as far as the minutes and scoring they are returning from the prior season. Without big portal grabs, that's a clear-cut rebuilding year with a combo of young guys and whatever else is left after the "big grabs" from the portal. It does not mean the "sky" (no pun intended) is falling because they may not be able to snag a Tournament bid next year (would love to be wrong as a bunch of Freshmen/Sophomores overachieve and get us there). I think Illinois is on the right track right now with the recruits they are bringing in out of high school these days. It doesn't mean every season is gonna be a great one. Losing your two best players from the 2020 recruiting class (for various reasons that I don't really "fault" anybody) and just having an unranked BBV to show as the sole remaining representative from the 2019 recruiting class catches up to you.
No offense intended here, but if we are not going to accept that TSJ was seriously pursued by Illinois, then I don't know why any of us are bothering to discuss anything and we should all just pack it up until next season begins and we see the team we have then (it would certainly be better for my own sanity if I did that).... he was heavily linked to Illinois since he put his name in the portal. But that assumes he's a "serious pursuit." We as fans would love to have him as a player but there have been rumors that his camp is difficult to handle. That could just be an excuse for not landing him but is also absolutely a plausible reason for backing off. We will probably never know the full story.
Therefore, I refuse to get worked up over recruiting/portal misses in most instances. It's less stressful (and more accurate) to evaluate the finished product once the class has been signed.
Of course I'll still follow all of the recruiting and portalling to a nutty degree. I'm just going to try my best not to prematurely jump to conclusions. I learned that the hard way one Cliffmas years ago.

This reminds me of last year, waiting for the third assistant to be named. Everyone was freaking out. “No one wants to come here!” “Underwood has whiffed on all of his targets!” Etc. I’d say Tim Anderson was worth the wait. I think our patience will be rewarded again, with the portal.Staff has a plan. There will be multiple transfers
People may just have to accept that there next year might be a missed Tournament year.
I don't get the need by some to rewrite history. the idea that the only guy we'd have taken in the hundreds of transfers so far in the portal is Murray is laughable. And it certainly doesn't comport with the hints from insiders.
Linked by whom? Fans certainly linked us. We showed up in a lot of national reporters' lists of schools who were "involved," but what does that even mean? Does it mean the camps have just talked or does it mean there are serious discussions going around? Our insiders talked about it, but they also pretty rapidly shifted gears toward other portal options and (later) mentioned that the TSJ camp was not easy to work with and the staff cooled as a result. Perhaps that's an excuse, but it is certainly plausible given the various nuggets of information we got from various sources.
I thought the staff wanted TSJ and several were excited he was out in Chicago with Kofi and some other Illini. Are you saying we didn't want TSJ?Murray is the only one
The staff wasn’t interested in Kendrick Davis, manny bates or mark sears… come on. Those are elite players that would have bridged the gap. I simply don’t believe our staff has only wanted 1 player (what about TSJ) since the end of March. Just doesn’t seem logical.Murray is the only one

Because of one public deal? Maybe the difference in spending isn’t far off, but you’re kidding yourself if you think the Miami alumni are more invested in their basketball program than we are. Regardless of their lack of football success recently, that’s a football school through and through. And again, plenty of reports Kofi made off better than 400k last year. Other guys definitely had some good money coming in.Actually, I think they do already. I'm not sure why you believe they'd spend less. I'd guess we have a richer fan base. A lot of you guys are eager to accept the view that TSJ was ours to have based on insider's info and other reports, but seem unwilling to believe later information that things went south due to the difficulties of his camp, as Sacraig has pointed out here. Some folks just seem so anxious to be negativeI thought the staff wanted TSJ and several were excited he was out in Chicago with Kofi and some other Illini. Are you saying we didn't want TSJ?
I am confident and optimistic we will get better transfers than in the past ten or so years. I am excited to see who that may be. I'd love someone that could make a big impact like Battle did back in the day. I honestly expect we will add some very good players in the portal. Petition to start a new thread now, based on the takes not only failing to improve, but inexplicably getting far worse.
