I guess this is why you lean on recruit rankings. They are often based on a consensus of opinions that have had multiple eyes on him on multiple occasions. I sometimes shudder when I hear "the staff went to see him and absolutely fell in love". It's very easy in sports to have a lights out game or to have a streak where you look like the next coming of Jordan and then crash back down to baseline. Anyone whose played any sports can attest to that.
Or the reverse. Bill Self went to see Andre Igodala and he had a bad game so we did not offer.

Nichi asks a valid question, though not sure if it really matters that much. It was posted that "And the fact that a bunch of high majors saw Butler a lot more than we did, but didn’t offer, is concerning to me." How do we know that a bunch of high majors saw Butler a bunch more than us, and decided to pass? Sounds to me like Nichi was just asking about any facts that support a stated premise. Doesn't really matter except to make it look like we are thrilled to get a commitment from a player that no other power conference wanted. Just saying that under-recruited doesn't necessarily mean less talented. It might, but it could also be because a player bloomed late or did not have as much exposure.

I think that now there is so many kids and so much film out there its hard sometimes to identify which kids to be looking at (one reason for the ranking services). A staff member can see a kid have a lights out game, think he might we worth a look and get access to TONS of game film to really be able to study if they are actually legit or not. Butler didn't play on one of the big time AAU circuits so probably had a lot less exposure than some other higher ranked players. Easy to miss on a guy like that.

Yeah it wasn't really to "answer" your question, but clearly there were others sniffing around. How many is pointless to worry or wonder about.

The whole topic was pointless. I hope the kid does great and is a non problem player. Coach has to live with his decisions.

Some of you are not going to like this.

It should tell everyone how silly this is that these podcast guys spent ANY time at all on a "3 star" recruit. Of course their take is the take.
What other take could anyone have based on available info? Offer list meh. Tape meh. Okay fine.
Coaches look at a kid and see something....progress is being made over the summer.
I have absolutely zero problem with a guy like this. Zero.

Welcome aboard Jase. Now go kill it.

It's really really weird to me that this board is angry about neutral basketball watchers saying a guy ranked 150+ doesn't move the needle. 80%of the board said the same thing last week
Right, neutral. These dudes cover Illinois purely to rile up the fanbase and generate clicks. They provide zero actual useful information. They don't have any sources. They aren't even particularly knowledgeable when it comes to the game of basketball. They're trolls.

That one of the highest paid coaches in college basketball is recruiting a player on the periphery of the top 200 who not too many other than Illini homers feel has any chance at all of contributing to a B1G title contender...that's going to be a story of interest covered by many who make their living broadcasting their take on college basketball, whether you agree with it or not.

Win? Like how much is the expectation? I always find that phrase so vague as to be meaningless.

I'm guessing 15-14 would be below your expectations, despite it being a winning record. But did last year meet your expectations?

My personal expectation is that we are in the top 25 at the end of the year. better years you're even stronger and each year that puts you in a position to make noise, and hopefully make a run occasionally. I'm not convinced our combo recruiting and portal work is getting us there.
Well, directly and simply, I meant that winning games > winning recruiting battles.

Indirectly, the “expectation of winning” is that you are contending for a conference title every year and making at least the second round of the tournament every year with a nice sprinkle of sweet 16 runs.

Will they have this same energy with Morez and when Fears likely comes here? What about the top 60 2025 kid we have on campus tonight?

Also, we have the Maryland Player of the Year in this class along with a really talented four star guard. These guys are idiots

Even worse: they are Michigan fans

That's why when I saw it was Sleepers podcast my immediate (and only) reaction was: *yawn*

Forget they're Michigan fans for a moment. Other than that, they're absolute nobodies. I can start a podcast in my grandma's basement too.
