I'm not implying, I'm flat out saying it. Furthermore, everyone not on this board is likely to agree.

Duke has more talent on their roster, year in and year out than Illinois is not a controversial statement. Just look at the NBA. Before Ayo, our last drafted player was Meyers Leonard in 2012. Since Ayo, Duke has had 8 players drafted, 7 in the first round, 34 drafted since Meyers Leonard. So anyone saying there is more competition or even equal competition at Illinois as Duke is just wrong by every available metric.

And I don't even know where any of this is really coming from. The original point is, just because Schutt couldn't get minutes, as a true Fr, ahead of Jeremy Roach (24), Dariq Whitehead (3), Tyrese Proctor (23), Mark Mitchell (13), and Super Super Sr Jacob Grandison doesn't tell me much about his quality. He has not shown on the court that he was overrated. He's just shown that he is not as good as a bunch of guys that will likely be in the NBA.

Furthermore, Schutt's specialty is something we sorely need. We are not a good 3pt shooting team. So again, not playing at Duke means very little to me. If we thought he was worth taking 2 years ago, unless we have a bunch of future NBA guys coming in next year, I don't see why we wouldn't still want him. Many on this board wanted Cole Certa. You think Certa is better than Schutt, especially after 2 years in a blue blood program?

Landscape has changed with the transfers. You are comparing HS rating with college experienced transfers. Harmon is shooting .357 from three in limited action and Shutt has not shown that at the college level. From the article about him redshirting believe he understands that and probably won’t transfer. The game has changed and college productivity doesn’t necessarily transfer to NBA drafting. Kofi a high profile example but many others. Ranking seem to have more to do with NBA potential than college productivity.

I watched every minute Schutt played and he had not been impressive. Not just about getting time on the floor, it's about what you do with them. The reason he wasn't getting that many minutes last year was because he didn't produce in the ones he did get. This year he was already relegated to further down the bench. For what we are going to have to replace next year I want transfers at least on the same level as this year. Guys that have already proven they can consistently score, rebound and play defense at the D1 level. A top notch ball handler/point gaurd needs to be priority #1.

Here is the recruits and their 247 ranking for Duke vs Illinois over the past 3 classes:
Duke
2022 - 2, 3, 4, 13, 23, 78 (Schutt), 167
2023 - 14, 17, 22, 23
2024 - 1, 11, 16, 20, 56

Illinois
2022 - 34 (transferred), 51 (transferred), 55, 96 (also RSing)
2023 - 61, 143, NR, NR (left almost before he got here)
2024 - 35, 110, 162,

If you think we are recruiting even close to the level of Duke, that's just factually incorrect. Our best players have been transfers. So Underwood and Scheyer are taking different routes, but in terms of talent on the roster, if I'm Schutt I'd rather fight for time with Justin Harmon than an endless stream of McDs AAs. Duke has 13 players over those 3 classes ranked higher than our top guy, 14 ranked higher than Schutt.

No one is saying he's too good for Illinois, quite the opposite. Some are saying go get this kid. So far, our 3pt shooting is still terrible. Shannon is playing like an All American, Goode is doing what we hoped he'd do, only 1 other guy on the team is shooting better than 25%. Yes 25%! And we're still taking more than 8 3pters a game. We need shooters and Schutt was viewed as one of the best not long ago.
Actually, we're averaging 26 3pters per game.

I guess the Duke staff saw something you didn’t
I mean the entire recruiting industry did since he was a top 100 recruit. But I've seen and played against better kids in the ihsa that were more impressive and not playing against schools from bfe

Not sure where you get the idea that they played a bunch of schools from BFE.

They played St. Rita, Springfield Lanphier, Don Basco Prep, Kenwood, etc. Just because they were a 1A school, doesn't mean they didn't play anyone!

Not only that, but he was a key part of the AAU team (Wolves, IIRC) that won the UA circuit national title (Huff, Schutt, Pierce,...).

I'm not a big Schutt guy, but the idea that he played against a bunch of scrubs is patently false.

People complaining about our transfers/recruiting the past two years are nuts.

Mayer was a 15 MPG player on a national championship team, then a starter the year following averaging almost 10 PPG. Shannon had an even bigger role at a great P5 school. We got three top 75 freshmen.

This past year we retained both Hawkins and Shannon, both were potential NBA draftees. We also got two low major transfers both of which averaged over 14 PPG their previous season.

I think BU deserves criticism and there have been times roster construction has been suspect but to say they haven’t been at least a top 25 caliber transfer + prep recruiting program the past couple years is objectively false. Retaining NBA talent players is a massive undertaking and something only the big boys can do. I fully trust this staff to have us back in the top 25 conversation next year.
