Iowa 15, Illinois 13, Postgame

This program needs to take one more step and cross the void currently separating us from a status of competency & respect. There is a realm just outside of our present reach where the Illini go and beat Kirk Ferentz and don’t get outpaced by what Luke Fickell is building in Madison.

It means upgrading personnel in the secondary and assembling an offensive line that gets a certified notary stamp from Bret. When it comes to Aaron Henry…the answer on him is not an emphatic “yes”.
Wouldn’t Jim Leonard make the most sense as the D coordinator next year?

I'm not quite sold on Aaron Henry as DC.Lack of pressure on QB is baffling.Seems the DC has tried to protect HIS young secondary by dropping more defenders in coverage. To me DB'S fundamentals are lacking,no improvement to speak of either.Biggest weakness on team.

Who wants to see Iowa annihilated in the Big Ten championship game?
There is a good chance Iowa does not win another game. Nebraska will put up a very good fight.

I feel like it gets said every year, but Iowa is the worst 9-10 win team I have ever seen. I think they lose by at least 20 points against OSU or Mich.

We can complain about the refs, and trust me I am as well, however we did get a couple of generous calls. The roughing the passer call could've gone either way. (Go ahead and roast me for saying that)

We had so many chances. The paddock safety, the dropped passes, the lazy defensive play on the fumble (because he thought it was incomplete initially), paddock not going for the first down and trying to juke..he did make a smart move getting out of the pile, poor special teams, consecutive poor 2nd and 3rd down runs in crunch time. Better bring it next week
The dropped passes, especially Washington's late, were killers. If Casey catches that ball, it's a fresh set of downs at close to midfield. It's never just one play one call that sinks you, but that one hurt badly.

I laughed at all the love Brian Ferentz got after game on FS1. Celebrated for complete incompetence.
Since when have sportscasters or their producers allowed logic to intrude on emotion?

I was thinking to myself that the Iowa players should have dumped the Gatorade jug on the DC. Without him Iowa is a 3-9 team at best.

The defense gave up 13 points. That’s a game that should be won.
The final margin was the 2 point safety.........Defense played good enough for the win..........Offense scored a TD and 2 FG's......

We needed Feagin to win and competent officials to know how to correctly spot the ball also...........We really really did.......

And we need receivers who can make a catch, in a crucial situation, on a well thrown ball that would have resulted in extended drives... especially late in the 4th quarter.....we really really do and we really really did because losing to Iowa really really sucks.

I felt like we outplayed them for the vast majority of the game but couldn’t capitalize on our opportunities

The sequence when we had the ball up 4 with 7 min left and Casey dropped the ball right in his hands on second down which would have given us a new set of downs and chance to put the game away- leading to an awful 35 yard line drive punt with a good return for them, gave them the momentum they needed when they had none

The only real criticism I can give the staff is on the 4 and 2 on the last possession we had- really silly decision to punt the ball- it cost a timeout to regroup and then obviously go for it. But that is an automatic go for it- using the timeout meant when we didn’t make it - one first down by Iowa meant ball game vs giving us another chance. It does seem Bielema really struggles with game strategy in this situations - he needs an assistant who’s sole job is to tell him what to do in those situations

As far as the spot of that ball, has anyone except this forum said anything about it? I didn’t see Williams complain, or in the game, Bielema never said anything during or after, announcers didn’t, etc…

Something must’ve looked weird to us on TV that wasn’t what happened in real life.

It was a terrible spot. It was very obvious to everyone on tv. I replayed it on my DVR two times to make sure I wasn't missing something. The referees just plain missed it.

We did get a couple calls in the middle of the game

However that was a text book driving the qb in the ground. That is what that penalty is trying to eliminate. In the Wisky Neb game there was a roughing of the passer for going low when the qb still had the ball

Things I don’t understand
Picking up the PI on IW early in the game
Reversing the call on IW catch and not reviewing it. I don’t know if it was a catch didn’t see replay but it looked like he controlled it and would have taken more than a 5 sec review
Not reviewing IW spot
BB having to call a timeout to force a review of an obvious drop

I am sure Iowa has their list. That is a lot of issues for one game. Sad thing it has been like that all season. Refs didn’t cost us but they didn’t help us.

It would make all the sense in the world, but I believe the insiders have hinted this isn’t a realistic scenario, nor part of Leonard’s plans.
I’m not really sure of the impact Leonard’s involvement made this year. Of the games I would have expected him to be deeply involved in the Illini lost at home to Wisconsin.
