As I’ve said previously, we are very vulnerable in the mid range with Dain playing drop coverage. Perkins made us pay today (along with his ~100 free throws).

Do not think we played poorly, and the reffing was fine. Way too many whistles but it was fairly consistent. Iowa made some tough shots and won seemingly every 50/50 ball, with the late Sandfort 3 after winning a 50/50 for them being maybe the biggest play of the game.

The case of RJ is truly mystifying. The hopes for him heading into the year were very high both internally and externally. The shoulder ding hasn’t helped, but his confidence is non-existent. It really is a shame.

Have no doubt if we see these guys again we beat them.

Today is another reminder that the future is bright with Jayden, Dain, and Ty. To play like that in that environment is truly impressive.

Maybe my longest post ever but was able to cool down after that one and gather my thoughts. On to Minnesota and this team can still certainly make a run moving forward.

I question it his consistent effort and focus at times. One huge play today were he got lazy and didn’t block out Perkins who ran right around him to get a rebound and draw a lazy foul on Hawkins due to his lack of focus and effort.
He has this happen too often with passes and lapses when opponents out hustle him. He has improved but still needs to do better in these close games
That was an airball. CH was playing it normally and Perkins realized it was short and slipped in front. Nothing to do with being lazy or lack of focus or effort.

Epps is going to be a really special player! He has all the tools. He’s going to eventually learn to pass up that shot at the end of the 1st half and hold for the last shot. That all comes with experience and time.

Outside of Coleman missing a pair of free throws (those hurt) and Dainja missing a free throw in last few minutes, we were very solid at the line. 18-23 (nearly 80%) at the foul line (18-22 if you don't include the intentional miss). Can't really complain about our free throw shooting today. The bigger issue was that we allowed Iowa to make way too many free throws (26/30). The 8 extra free throws Iowa made was the real difference.
Why did Coleman try that last 3-pointer instead of one of the guys who had been hitting?

Anyone who says that is crazy. At worst, this is a 6 seed right now. Win our next three games and we will be right on the four line going into Indiana, which would obviously be the biggest win of the year
According to Lunardi we're still on the 5 line even after the loss. High 6 at worst.

Other teams lose, too. I don't think some people understand this.

The inferiority complex ingrained in parts of this fan base won't allow them to understand this. In their minds, we're either world beaters or we're trash.

The fact is that we're a college basketball team that can go out and compete with anyone, and that's with our 3 point shooting woes. That's a pretty damn good place to be

No excuses. Can't close it out and too many fouls.

Surprised that Goode did not make an appearance to alleviate the foul troubles and bring a boost.

If you dont think that the refs missed crucial calls down the stretch that hurt us then I guess we watched two different games.

Whether they did or not is not the point. If the players on the floor don't make some questionable decisions, especially in the 2nd half, the refs don't even come into play. Even Underwood said in the postgame that they weren't disciplined enough on the defensive end.

Who is good in the B10 then? Aint a team in the league that doesnt make some dumb mistakes. Edey/Gillis combined for as many TOs as shannon/Cohawk......in one half so far.

Even a great team like Purdue can have games where they don't perform as well. But they don't have the tendency to have the dumb mistakes pile up like we saw in this game and again in games like the NW and IU games.

The players need the criticism. They don't need hostility though. All these guys I imagine want to play at the next level, and they need to hear what people are seeing.

There’s another angle to look at all this.

What makes a good Coach? The ability to recruit. Be a good strategist. But maybe even more important is the ability to reach young people and elevate them in terms of their game play and as positive human beings.

College Ball has some great recruiters. It has some great strategists. But the ability to connect with young men and help them to be better players and people is a more unique and rare gift. Not so many of these Coaches around.

We know that any young person goes through things. Finding an identity... relating to others... trying to fit in yet also be your own person... dealing with self-doubts.. worries about your future. You know, little things like that.

Add to all this the intense public scrutiny from playing in from of packed houses... National television and media... the crushing pressures of social media and dealing with fan expectations. And your family and friends. It can easily get overwhelming.

Not everyone handles this kind of pressure-cooker the same way. Some guys are cool and won’t let things faze them (Epps?). Other guys are more sensitive and self-critical and less assured of themselves (Hawkins? Meledrez?).

This is where the Coach (and Staff) come in. You’ve already recruited these guys. You already develop your strategy in the Coach’s Office. It’s this Third Thing that separates the good Coach from the outstanding Coach who is also teacher and mentor and cheerleader and nurturing critic all in one. And you bring all that to the young men and apply your Coaching skills to each unique individual person. For the short time you have them.

The point? Situations like Hawkins and Melendrez are what great Coaches like Underwood live for. The chance to make a lifetime difference in the lives and futures of these young men who play for you. To find a way to reach each and every unique individual.

This is what great Coaches live for. And the kind of Coach that player dreams to play for.

Yes if he just blocks out, the rest of that play doesn't happen. He also inexplicably lost the ball against the press. Brad pulls him for a couple of minutes, puts him back in and he tries to throw a 3/4 court pass against the press that gets picked off. Its these mental lapses that drive us crazy. I do think that he has settled in and found a way to contribute in every game and that's what we need from him. He can affect the game in many ways and If he can just start putting it all together we will be a second weekend team.

I disagree Coleman should have blocked him out. He's not the only one that needs to work on that.

Dunno if anyone mentioned it but TSJ's bball IQ is pretty bad. Jacking up a contested 3 in the final 2 mins with 20 on the shot clock? Not getting the last shot before the half? Missing the bunny driving between 2 dudes begging for a foul that isn't there, how many times have we seen that? He does some good things but my god he is not clutch at all and super frustrating to watch. At least CH gives some effort and makes the effort plays.

I am probably going to get trashed for this post by 50% of this board but I am doing this anyway. I understand that this is an opinion forum however I wish that all of you “fans” that hide behind your username and avatar would lose your anonymity when you trash our players. I know everyone didn’t play their best today, but I certainly feel that the effort was there from all of our players. It was a great game. We just came up short (covering the spread, mind you). They had a player have a career game. All of you experts that were second string point guards on your high school team that know what our players should be doing should unmask yourself and not talk about how so and so stinks and cost the game. This happens every time we lose a game.

If I was a parent of some of these players I would think twice about our fandom. Anyway, it was a great game to watch, I wish we would have won, and I hope we make one or two more shots the next time.

Go Illini!

If you want to post your name, address, social security number, and other personal information first, I'm sure others with follow your lead.

Seriously, come off the high horse. It's an anonymous message board by definition. If you're unhappy with the format of the board, why frequent it?

Our players aren't little kids. They are playing bigtime college athletics, and they understand that public criticism is part and parcel of the gig.

Furthermore, if our players are actually perusing this board and spending their time worrying about what anonymous posters are saying about their games, our team has more problems than we actually know about.

From what I understand, we're all here to discuss Illini basketball. An honest discussion includes both a discussion of the positives and the negatives.

We had a few too many TO's today versus Iowa, although we have been doing better in that area for most of the recent games. So, I went to ESPN to see where we rank in BIG play ... at the bottom of the conference (TOPG). However, our assists per game are better than I thought.

For anyone that doesn't know, you can filter torvik's rankings by time period (among many other filters).

I filtered it to show the rankings since we turned our season around (Jan 7). Iowa is 17th during this stretch, and 2nd in the B1G. We are 26th, and 4th in the B1G. This was a high level game, against a high level opponent, in a hostile environment. If you aren't taking a bunch of positives from this one, you might need to see a psychiatrist.

I hope cohawk is OK after that nasty fall in today's game......
Refs were awful

Game thread posting is embarrassing and way over the line ...

Refs were awful

We played very good , at times , and not so good at times...what else is new ??

All the games I've watched today have the same mistakes made that our game had and the Refs were awful in those games also...

It is a fact that the inept B$G reffing pattern is causing our conference problems in the NCAA tourney...no doubt in my mind at all
So many missed calls..
So many make up calls
So many touch fouls called with hard contact fouls not being called .

I really don't understand the hate heaped on our players by supposedly Illini fans.

Criticism is OK, I guess , but some here think they have all the answers to what ails the beloved....
Being more vocal than others doesn't make you a bigger fan...
Being downright rude does make you a bigger blowhard and more likely to be put on ignore by others.

I'm as pissed off as anyone else here is , but I've learned to move on to the next game as soon as possible to save what little sanity I have.....
Carry on Illini Nation...it's what we do best....it really really is....
