Jalen Coleman-Lands to transfer

It is standard to block transfers within your conference. I'd also throw in Conzou just for spite. And I feel he ends up at Notre Dame, but he could end up with his old coach at Depaul.

Best wishes to him no matter where he ends up. We will always have Chicago St.

His statistics both inside the arc and outside declined his sophomore year over his freshman year. His scoring also dropped off and I think his minutes also.

Simply put, other teams had started to figure him. Contest the three and make him beat you off the dribble and driving to the basket was not his strong suit.

What happened last year was probably going to happen even more this year.

Also adding 4 new faces at the guard position didn't help the situation.

Players want to play and you can't blame him for transferring to increase his minutes.

There is a part of me who is sad to see JCL leave… However, there is a part of me that was truly wondering what his role would be… If you watch Oklahoma state last year and the video where BU describes the basics of his offense I am not quite certain that JCL fit like some of you believe… This offense requires the four Perimter players not only to be able to shoot but also put the ball on the floor… The defensive scheme is pressure defense and I don't know how many times I saw an opponent Drive around JCL last year...BU wants his type of players and I am having a hard time seeing JCL as a part of next years team… I would imagine this is one reason we got our new transfer… Also opens up a scholarship for next year's class ...losing no sleep over this transfer other than to see a nice kid leave

Aaron Jordan really needs to step up. Frazier is going to get a lot of minutes as well. Those two could make up for the lost scoring of JCL, but boy all these new faces usually means a year of rebuilding.

But Heirman to DePaul was recent and Alstork to CU was recent as well as BU getting some work outs in. Something made him realize that he wasn't going to get the kind of touches he needed.

Sad, but he never was healthy in the offseason to build physically like others had so he played weak. His shot was pretty dang good though.

"as well as BU getting some work outs in". I brought this up in another thread: Somebody explain to me about "work outs"-----We are in the off-season. The NCAA has strict rules about when teams can practice. What are these work outs? Who is running them (Underwood, perhaps)? are they legal?

Strange timing on this one. Staff/Underwood have been here almost 2 months.

It's the end of the school year and he had a chance to work out with Underwood to see what's expected of him. Maybe he thought this system was a bad fit. He's a good student and represented the university well. Best of luck.

Basketballwise for Illinois, does Jalen Coleman-Lands = Jamar Smith? Big time freshman years, looking like lights-out shooters, .482 for Jamar (are you kidding me?!) and .422 for Jalen. Both fell off in Year 2 (.310 and .380 respectively). Both ended with .402/.405 career 3P%.

Of course, OFF the court, they were completely dissimilar, but I find it interesting that their Illini careers ended up pretty much the same.

Our new transfer takes over the role of JCL...Jordan needs to grow as a player but won't be thrust into that primary role IMO

I believe the players are allowed something like 8 hours a week of practice during the off-season while school is in session, but it can't be the full roster at the same time. So they do small groups of similar players working on individual skills, not technically installing the offense or defense. Others can correct me if I have the details wrong...

This. Thank you. I wish JCL nothing but success, but he is not an ideal fit in BU's offense. That is what this is about. If you can't see that now, just go find some video of OKSt or SFA and it is very, very obvious (at least to me) that a one dimensional shooter that is weak on the defensive end and doesn't rebound is not going to find real minutes.

Good luck JCL. :illinois:

They have had a limited number of workouts, drills primarily, not full on practices. Yes, its legal.

There were limited workouts allowed during BUs first few weeks. Meetings and discussions are obviously allowed. Coach knows the rules - he is not doing anything illegal here.

For sure BU and JCL have had adequate time to get an initial feel for each other, what is expected, etc. Not to mention, I bet BU has watched about every game film he can get his hands on. He knows what kind of player JCL is and what he would like him to work on.

All that may have rubber JCL the wrong way - so time to find a better fit. I don't blame either party here.

The message isn't directly at DePaul. And like you, they don't concern me one bit. But if its ok for DePaul to do it, then Notre Dame will do it, and Kansas will do it. It will be anarchy.

We're talking cats and dogs living together, real Armageddon stuff :D

Seriously though, my first thought was what you posted. IF you tamper with a player, no matter the situation, there are consequences. Wait until the player requests a transfer, request permission, and go from there.

Not saying DePaul tampered, but if they did . . .

What is going on? I am curious why we're losing some of our players already

I hate to see JCL go. He seemed like a classy kid and was an above average shooter. However, this should have been anticipated, same as DJ Williams departure. Coach Underwood, coming from the Huggy/Frank Martin tree, is going to demand his players play defense first and foremost. Finke should be extremely grateful that there isn't more frontcourt depth! He isn't exactly Egwu on D....

I don't really care to hear about Heirman being in JCL's ear unless you have proof. Every time something doesn't go our way lately with players this board devolves into whining about tampering with zero evidence to support the allegations. JCL would have fit in this system because elite shooters fit in EVERY system. This loss hurts badly, and there's no way around that. Let's not cut down the character of a kid who up until today was considered a model student athlete. I've never seen comments about him not working hard enough in practice or not buying into coaching until today. We were all thrilled that JCL was both playing for us and representing our university. Let's wish him well wherever he goes and focus on our team because right now it needs a ton of work.

There is pretty solid proof, it is not whining. But hey, keep judging from a distance without any facts. It's a good look for you

No, I am not putting the proof out there bc it's not mine to share.

JCL has been flirting with transferring since the end of his Freshman year. Many times at road games he would have 'handlers' in his ear immediately following the game. I witnessed this on several occasions over two seasons. I truly believe this decision had little to do with BU, the system, etc. JCL is a very hard worker at shootarounds, practice, etc especially when he is having trouble with his shot. He works on the three constantly but he is just too one-dimensional and as everyone knows, his handle is very lacking. I was hoping he would stay and have no idea if the incoming competition for minutes was the final straw. I do know this has been coming for a long time before BU got here. It was obvious he was not happy with his limited role under JG but he just never developed the ability to create space for his own shot and only got the minutes he deserved imo. He seems like a nice kid but from my observations he did not appear to be very close with his teammates. Certainly not a head case, but just did not seem to be like Leron, AJ and others that celebrated their teammates' success when they were riding the bench. Next year we may witness a record number of minutes played by our freshmen. I hope so. Future looks very bright. My guess for the Braggin Rights score: 99-97 Illinois.

I'm sorry but all of this is untrue. I mean every single part of it, and as someone who knows JCole personally, I just cannot let these types of idealisms be portrayed on my brother like that man! And I know everyone on here is going to say how can we believe you, this is your 1st post... but it's just not factual. Am I saying I know why he transferred? No....

J is not revealing anything to anyone outside his immediate family right now, but the assumption that Jalen has been flirting with transferring since his freshman year and all that could not be more off base.

Long live the :chief: and Go Illini! :illinois:

Thanks for sharing. Sorry you were moved to make your first post because of something so controversial.

Some of the people on this board would fail so miserably at being an P5 HC/AD, it's not even funny.

Blocking someone from going to Depaul?

Bush League.

Wish him well at his next destination and move on. Everyone wanted to play 'Big Boy Ball' when BU was hired, this is part of that.

Goodness.

If there was "solid proof" it would/should be brought to the NCAA and not peddled as a conspiracy theory on a message board. It looks like sour grapes or some sort of justification for JCL deciding to leave the University of Illinois. That's what's actually not a good look.
