Jalen Coleman-Lands to transfer

#101
There is a part of me who is sad to see JCL leave… However, there is a part of me that was truly wondering what his role would be… If you watch Oklahoma state last year and the video where BU describes the basics of his offense I am not quite certain that JCL fit like some of you believe… This offense requires the four Perimter players not only to be able to shoot but also put the ball on the floor… The defensive scheme is pressure defense and I don't know how many times I saw an opponent Drive around JCL last year...BU wants his type of players and I am having a hard time seeing JCL as a part of next years team… I would imagine this is one reason we got our new transfer… Also opens up a scholarship for next year's class ...losing no sleep over this transfer other than to see a nice kid leave

+1

Was hoping that by staying he was going to commit to working on his weaknesses, but if he doesn't see this as the best environment, best to move on. Good luck to him.

All these cheating schools and players will soon face the wrath of the NCAA and penalties that will cripple their program. Just wait!

DJax is ours, until this cheater Mike Brey starts tampering with the process corrupting the poor kid. Cliff is such a nice kid, both him and his family devoted to their state, until Self and Jerrance start cheating to steal him from us, convincing him to act as a clown on national TV. Snider? Ours, ours, ours! Until that liar cheating Pitino comes into play. Brunson has been taken advantage by his own father and this two-faced cheater, pretty boy Jay Wright. Evans was ours too! But his AAU coach and mother succumbed to the pressure of Travis Ford. They paid for his services! Goodwin is the man of steel, the exceptional character, the "glue," until this Travis Ford again corrupts him in a matter of weeks. His buddy, Tilmon, resisted, due to the positive influence of exceptional leadership exerted by his HS coach at Lalu. If it was not for this cheater Cuonzo, who will soon be behind bars, he would be an Illini. And JCL? Such a nice kid, going to church every Sunday, resisting all the pressure from cheaters like Brey during his recruitment, telling them to take a hike, only to be corrupted by "handlers" after every game at Illinois and his own HS coach!

But don't worry! You think the NCAA is not watching? Huh! Think again, they will all be on probation, soon the NCAA tournament will consist of one team. Illinois.

First of all would love to have JCL. But I was concerned with his abilty to dribble, drive, and pass. He is also a beliw average defender. So when you look at tools, JCL is very one dimensional. Kipper and TJL proved to be better all around players though neither can shoot like JCL. You add Mark Smith and Alstork, you have more skillef players. Still wanted JCL to stay and improve on those weaknesses. Starting to think the future lies with Smith, Frazier, TJL, Damonte and possibly Ayo at guards.

Tilmon would have fit. Elite talent fits in any system.
I'd like Tilmon on the team, but it depends on what you mean by "elite." Not a MCDAA or one and done player who will probably struggle mightily his first year and then who knows year two.
Strange timing on this one. Staff/Underwood have been here almost 2 months.
Yes and no. Myke Henry leaving was this time of the year as well. I think these guys wanted to see what BU would bring and do, but the writing was on the wall.
Why is it understandable he's leaving? Does he not fit in Underwood's system?

He wasn't going to be handed starter minutes and his subpar ball handling was going to be magnified.

JCL's shot % in the paint had to be under 30%....or at least it seemed that way. He never really figured out how to use his body to create space.

at the end of his soph season he was a sub, a second team player. on a 2nd division NIT team that was the definition of mediocre.

IMO he was the epitome of overrated. Couldn't dribble, avg at best defender, made no one around him better.

I wish him the best wherever he goes but I guess I'm in the minority by not being all that concerned about him leaving.

kinda where I am, seemed like a good kid just not what was advertised on the court. Maybe he would have gotten better under Brad, we'll see how he turns out I guess.

If the goal is to win TITLES, we need better players across the board. Lets get it done!

I have to laugh when I hear that he was a great shooter, I must be missing a lot of games he played, because he was average at best.

I agree with you.

The culture is changing in regards to players that fit the new system and you will like what you see going forward.:illinois:

Freshman record for threes made, while shooting over 42% from three. Sophomore year was less impressive, but I would say his freshman year qualified. Certainly a weapon we'd love to have available on the current roster. Way I see it, AJ now gets the 15+ min per game JCL would've had. Might be a good thing in the new system, but certainly might not be.

Best of luck to JCL, wherever he goes. Will miss ya.

As for us, as long as there are more Marks playing BB, we should be just fine.

That is something you cannot take away from him. In the right situation, on the right team he can be deadly. We just aren't going to be that type of team moving forward.

We will find out this year if AJ has what it takes. If not then we know what might happen. I hope he does very well.

The loss of JCL will sting. We have no depth. Hopefully the addition of a transfer big will come soon

Maybe overrated, but I for one believe JCL had/has alot of potential. Its up to coaching staff to develop players. I can't see it any other way than our university and coaches failed to develop him to reach his potential. I know injuries didnt help.

I dont know if Alstork was the straw that broke this, but honestly I'd rather see JCL develop here and excel in a new system and see him graduate at Illinois than fight for a one and done transfer who carries a .8 ATR. All water under the bridge now and I will wish all the best to JCL at his next stop....even if its B10.

Agreed. I don't like the JCL <=> Alstork trade. Went from KNunn to JCL being my favorite guys. Geez.

What was JCL's ATR?

Nevermind, I looked it up, 34 assists to 35 turnovers for .97 ATR. Not enough of a difference for that to be something used to argue your case. Add in the fact that Alstork ppg was 10+ higher then JCL and it's really a no-brainer. What you'd 'rather see' doesn't guarantee it would happen. I think the likelyhood of Alstork having a great season next year are much higher then JCL's. Anyways, I don't think this was forced on JCL. I think he just decided he'd be happier somewhere else. Too many posters are acting like JCL was creaned. There's no evidence to support that yet.

Wow, a lot of negativity in here. A lot of bashing JCL. A lot of people trying to spin this as positive. A lot of people trying to make themselves feel better. :tsk:

It is not a positive. Losing JCL hurts our team. The illini fandom is trying to somehow spin this in a positive light when it is the opposite. Great player, great student and person we have lost here. :(

I would have liked it if JCL stayed, but I'll take Alstork for a year plus a 2018 wing/guard. JCL shot 36% from the field and really regressed from year one across the board. What matters are results, not potential. The results he produced were substandard for a top 40 recruit. Alstork isn't one dimensional like JCL and while we'll be thin, he'll have more help than what he did at Wright State so I'd expect his percentages to even out or improve.
