Jordan Goodwin commits to SLU

According to Werner it came down to Northwestern and SLU. Seems like PT was a huge factor, and The way things went down with Tate was enough to push him overboard. Oh well, put a little neosporin on it and move on. I-L-L

That's not what Werner said...Goodwin quoted that to the Belleville paper.

Goodwin - badloss

Calling it a two team race between SLU and Northwestern was essentially a slap in the face to the Illini who had been on him as long as anyone and were perceived leaders for well over a year I believe. Oh well, hope he enjoys playing in the lower league.

Now let's get Frazier and Kiir and maybe one more and end with a pretty good class.

Best of luck to JGood. I'll feel genuinely bad for him if he's moved over to the wing in a couple seasons. Hope he gets everything he wants at SLU. Even if he hopefully does, doubt we'll be hearing much about him.

I want all these kids to do well..be productive and healthy....that being said, I honestly think there's a little fear in Goodwin....clearly doesnt have NBA athleticism...that requires an NBA attitude which is "I want to compete against the best to show I have the ability to play with the best"...hes not even willing to compete for playing time..SLU and the Mildcats...ha

juxtapose that against Darnell Valentine.....not an elite athlete but put himself in a position to earn a spot in a great program against great players...competed in a great conference against NBA level players...made the big time...Im guessing Goodwin doesnt sniff the NBA which is nothing to be ashamed of...unless you didnt have the brains or balls to put yourself in the best position to make the League

Makes me appreciate the way Tilmon, DA Williams, Pickett, DJ Williams handled their recruitments. Not saying others didn't handle them well, those are just the ones that stick out that i really respected.

The Great Northwest
C'est la vie say the old folks, that goes to show you never can tell...

Best of luck, Jordan. I guess you're just not an Illini guy.

After this decision we won't hear about this kid again lo!

Regarding Goodwin's lack of communication with the staff, isn't it possible that he called them a couple of weeks ago and told them he wasn't coming, and then chose to stop corresponding with schools he'd already eliminated? This would make sense if it indeed came down to SLU and NW. Obviously, Groce would still call/text/push for a last-minute meeting, but maybe Goodwin wanted to get rid of distractions.

This would make sense wrt the heating up of Abu Gigab's recruiting, as well.

Meh. Didn't need him. We'll be fine on the perimeter.

SLU? Have fun playing at a mid-major.

I hear the SLU vs Duquesne match ups are a real hoot to listen to on the local Pittsburgh radio affiliates. Cant wait to pick up the post dispatch the morning after to see how the bilikens fared! /s

I just don't get what the rush was. It's not like the scholarship offer would've been pulled from him if he didn't give SLU a verbal soon - they probably would've waited until February for him.

Seems like a poor financial decision long-term. Travis Ford owes his entire reputation to "developing" Marcus Smart, but Smart was a 5* PG and the #1 PG in the country coming out of high school. He actually lost money playing for Coach Ford due to his performance decline and draft stock tumble, and is only now starting to live up to his potential under Brad Stevens (Thad Matta coaching tree).

lol in no undescript terms, it was relayed to me JG punched a wall after 1:30pm today...he is pretty upset at this one (obvs)

Ok.....so let me get this straight. Coach was suprised enough by Goodwin's decision he punched a wall???

We all knew it was coming before coach!!! We are the insiders of the insiders:)

Not happy that we lost him but very glad this did not drag out til his birthday. Hope he has a good career and we can bring on some highly rated Illini guys in our greater positions of need.

Amen.

Let's see: Indiana, Purdue, ND, and who else? Unless you are counting Butler in that mix? Wouldn't consider them that "major", though.

Butler is most definitely a major program. Two Finals appearances in the last Decade. And they're in a big-time conference, every bit as good as the Big Ten.

With respect to Goodwin, we already have a very good class, with potential to make it even better. If we add a quality PG and a quality PF/C to this group, the class will be fantastic.

Any chance we can get the non-Illini guy off the first page and put up our new fb commit?

Ok. Looks like it just went up. But let's remove the non guy picture. Not sour grapes. Just focusing on the positive.

Basketball trumps football in this school until further notice(aka, Lovie Smith brings multiple B10 titles to Champaign). Quite frankly, basketball has and probably always will be the more important sport.

SLU fan here and I promise I come in peace...

Sounds like Ford went full-court press on Goodwin over the last month and then getting Corey Tate as an assistant was massive. Ford also told Goodwin he could play PG at SLU and that Goodwin reminded Ford of Marcus Smart. He told Goodwin that being a PG was his route to the NBA. That apparently sat EXTREMELY well with Goodwin as no other coach had brought that up.

That said, I've seen Goodwin play more than a dozen times and I don't think he's PG material. Definitely a better chance in the A10 than the Big 10, but I still don't see it. But again, that's how recruiting works. You tell a guy what he wants to hear and you deal with the potential problem once they get there. It sucks, but everyone does it.

I'm a big time Illini fan and always will be. SLU has been and always will be my first team but I was excited to see Jordan deciding between my two programs. Yes, I know I should just pick one team but I just can't. Jordan would have done well at Illinois. I think he'll be a star at SLU. You guys have a stacked recruiting class as it is. It'll be fun to see his career play out. Hopefully we meet in the NCAA's soon.

Ford made a good pitch, and he's right - it is Goodwin's only shot at the NBA. Sure it's a longshot, but it's a shot nonetheless.

I thought the key to getting Goodwin was stacking some talent around him. How ironic that talent may have scared him off.

The NBA is pretty much becoming all wings these days

I follow a page called "Everything stl sports" on Facebook because they usually pass along information about sports in stl pretty quickly (as well as the occasional funny meme.) SLU is one of the teams featured on the page, obviously. Here we are 7 1/2 hours after Goodwin's announcement and there still hasn't been a post about it. You think anyone in STL cares about biliken hoops in the offseason? Lol.

The more I think about it, I couldn't be happier it's not northwestern. Goodwin could have led them to the tourney once and for all(more like a couple times, potentially)and sparked all kinds of life into that program. Could have been a major, major boost for their recruiting. Would have been no bueno. I'll take it.

Coach Groce was the only coach to catch the high school title game for Goodwin and to congratulate him and how was that loyalty reciprocated? As a human being, Goodwin could've been respectful enough to contact the Illinois coaching staff and explain his decision and not leave them hanging.

If I'm coach Groce, I am fuming, steaming, mad as can be.
